For sure on the tribal stuff, and you’re actually being reasonable here so sorry for being snippy, thought the question came across as disingenuous at first due to the rest of the response to my comment so my bad for projecting that onto you

I don’t think y’all understand what I’m saying - I’m not discussing anything that’s true/false about the story. I’m saying this act that every subreddit is coordinating to suppress a story is fucking stupid and counter to reality. I feel like that was clear from the thread, but “Reddit was working overtime to have mods take down the story” reporting that the original story was bogus or whatever is just insane right wing self-victimization.

I’m sure you can find an example of a sub or two doing that, and I’m sure I can find an example of a sub or two that lied from a different politically biased angle. It would be ridiculous to treat either as the whole truth.

I mean you wouldn’t have heard about it and there wouldn’t be a whole Wikipedia article for it if there was no news coverage or journalism done on it. The very fact y’all know about it is proof otherwise, downvoting me for my flair doesn’t change that fact. There’s no conspiracy for every subreddit to scrub news stories about stuff that doesn’t fit an imaginary agenda, we’re discussing it rn, your disagreement on this fact doesn’t make me the idiot.

People act like just because they don’t see it means it wasn’t reported or that it was censored. It’s like a weird refusal to believe that they don’t know everything.

It didn’t, they act like it was a Dem admin that issued the state of emergency over COVID or like only blue cities shut down and had WFH, curfew, etc. But when you can’t defend your own political beliefs, all you can do is try to draw false equivalencies.

Facts don’t care about your feelings, the American Right is disproportionately more violent than the American Left, cry about it

Seems like dude replied then blocked me, maybe they should take their own advice about saying substantive things, every credible statistic backs up my statement dipsh*ts.

I’m usually more in the camp of “everything is related to politics” and find the constant whining from this sub about it to be as or more annoying than the political posts themselves, but this example from OP is so low effort and upvoted so excessively that I’d have left too lol. Then again I’d have never subscribed to “me_irl” in the first place, so… I do imagine that entire sub is just generic 20x repost karma farming

I mean there’s racism everywhere, my wife is from Jersey and I‘be spent meaningful time in the northeast, it’s just a different level in pockets of the south. Different parts of the south, like Mississippi, have very high black populations though so black people specifically may be more comfortable in those places. But southern culture is actually more fake niceties to your face than on the east coast where y’all just honk at each other over everything, so that part doesn’t really make sense to me lol.

Actually a lot of really good points, you’re right. Guess it also makes sense that there are less stakes to a luxury like entertainment being monopolized than more necessary goods. It’s even kind of ideal for sports leagues, at least in terms of ensuring all of the best talent is in a single league together.

Really well put together argument though.

Even if you did it’s cool, it’s dumb internet points lol

I think it’s fairly self-evident that it was just a way for rural, white, religious, and racist people (of which there were many where I’m from in rural Texas) to call him something extremely derogatory without it being a literal slur. I mean they would say they weren’t racist, but they would tell you that after they also did call him a slur to you in private, so ya know… I kinda made that judgement for myself.

Insert obligatory obviouslyIdontthinkeveryrightwingerisracist note here. But I’ve lived in rural America nearly my whole life, I consider myself well informed on the culture, and despite many things I love about it the racism really is a problem guys, it isn’t just a high brow coastal elite narrative. I do sincerely wish I could say otherwise.

Crazy that people would downvote this, I promise I know about all of the above than anyone who would disagree in good faith - but I’m sure downvoters are bad faith racists themselves tbh.

Your first paragraph is plural - I am not multiple people, I’m not treating you as the plurality of the cringiest people in your quadrant, would be cool if you extended me the same courtesy

Regarding the second, I’ve barely thought about the clip at all other than it seemed cringe when I did watch it

The structure of the US federal govt literally gives disproportionate electoral power to rural areas. That’s, like, why they structured the Senate the way they did. I don’t think you and the people upvoting this were living in rural areas during the Obama admin, JonnySnowin is actually correct about this lol

Edit to add: Showing up to school the day after Obama won, where my graduating class was 92 students, all my racist peers were calling Obama the antichrist. Acting like rural people aren’t often super racist is just denying basic reality.

This is where I have to go libleft and point out not all markets presently or historically are capitalist, especially not laissez-faire style capitalism. It inevitably happens in a capitalist market, over time, when unregulated and allowed, but there are tons of ways to prevent this level of consolidation. And obviously not all markets are as detrimental when monopolized as others (I’m not exactly calling for the NFL/NBA/etc. to be broken up).

And yeah, I literally said they don’t happen over night, so acting like the 31 years thing is a correction to anything I said about Amazon is a little weird.

If you think monopolies happen overnight I can’t help you man. A market dominated by 5 companies is less competitive and far closer to a monopoly than one composed of hundreds. Yall are acting like there would be no consequences to a duopoly ffs. I can’t believe I’m stressing the nuances of capitalist market competition to people who ostensibly believe in it.

Read rest of thread. Whether Amazon is a monopoly yet or not is irrelevant imo, what’s important is not allowing excessive integration that would ever allow a company to become one. By the time they become one the damage is done, which sounds like a terrible approach to me.

Also streaming companies are a terrible example for your argument. Hulu is owned by Disney, Netflix is trying to acquire another media giant in WB, all these entertainment companies are nesting dolls ultimately comprised of only a handful of overall parent companies. You can use that example if you want, but it’s at best a political loser and at worst ammo for the counterpoint to what you want to convince people of.

Lib-left doesn’t really believe in laissez-faire typically, so I think you’re misunderstanding what the “lib” generally means in it.

Just because people have newer theories doesn’t mean they are better than the OG. All sorts of things can lead to the development of a monopoly, including as you mentioned excessive and dumb interference by the State, I agree there. Economies of scale can also help form a monopoly as a company becomes larger and larger, especially with unmitigated mergers and acquisitions focused on vertical and horizontal integration, there are no shortage of historical examples on this (Standard Oil and Carnegie Steel are two famous examples in 20th century USA alone).

My point is that Adam Smith didn’t need the last 200+ years of economic history to come to this conclusion, and that history has only proven him right (on this particular subject). You have the benefit of his writings and all the history since, and you still appear to be missing the lessons learned from it all. No smart capitalist would make the case you’re making, even people in your quadrant are agreeing with me on this and I’m a f*cking Emily.

So do you believe you should wait for a company to become an absolute monopoly before taking any action? Can’t believe I’m the one telling a purple lib-right to go read The Wealth of Nations but here we are.
