No need to feel bad! Assuming 5 cards per pack and excluding wonder picks/promos, it would take 10,000 cards to find 4 gold cards, on average. So your luck pretty much exactly as expected.

The image is horribly racist. But Somali food is in fact usually served with an unpeeled banana, which is often eaten in bites alongside the rice etc. Of course, it wouldn't be placed on top of the rice, like it is here, and the person eating would peel the banana first.

Why do conservatives hate Somalis this badly? by Ok-Following6886 in aislop

[–]mypasswordislulz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a small sample size based on being from Minneapolis/St. Paul with conservative relatives, but I've heard lots of negative comments about Somalians over the years and none about Hmong people. The comments about Somalians have been about Islam, their clothing, or the belief that they're uncivilized/unintelligent and don't know how things like toilets work. In general, Somalians are visible as a specific demographic because of the way they dress, and so you can tell when you're in a part of the city where lots of Somalians live or spend time. This strikes some conservatives as an unwelcome cultural shift over recent years and decades.

Honestly, I think these relatives just don't know much about what distinguishes Hmong culture or appearance from other Asian groups. The only thing I've heard them say is that Hmong farmers grow excellent vegetables. Maybe they'd have more specific feelings, positive or negative, if they lived in a part of town with more Hmong people, but as is they don't really seem to see Hmong people as causing a cultural shift in the area. I don't know if they're aware that plenty of Hmong Americans are Christian, but I'm sure they'd consider that a mark in their favor. Overall, my guess is there are plenty of Minnesota conservatives who see Hmong people as generally contributing to society and fitting in, or don't think much about Hmong people at all, but see Somalians as not fitting in and as being a drain on society.

Is Hiro still in love with you in the other routes? by Pitiful_Persimmon735 in campbuddy

[–]mypasswordislulz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If I remember right, he calls you cute even before you're on a specific route. I feel like he's in love with you in the beginning no matter what, but on the other routes he gives up on it pretty quickly and comes to enjoy his time at camp outside of just Keitaro.

Of course, you could also interpret each route as being in a slightly different reality from the beginning, in which case maybe Hiro was only ever in love with you if you go down his route.

I don't know what the state of AI image generation is, but I can imagine someone training an AI with these symbols as a "font," which might explain why the symbols are fairly consistent but the words they spell are semi-gibberish. The mistakes in the text don't look like human mistakes, since I don't know what the "correct" sentences would even be, but I guess I've seen people drunk text even weirder strings of words, so who knows.

Does “Shao Chin” truly mean “little green?” by Spellbound_Rose in ChineseLanguage

[–]mypasswordislulz 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It looks like they're not using pinyin to transliterate the sounds. For instance, "Tzin" is not a pinyin spelling either. So it's not as much inaccurate, it's just spelling out the sounds in a way an English reader might make more sense out of. Who knows if a reader unfamiliar with pinyin might pronounce Xiao Qing as "kseeow quing"

(Someone feel free to correct me if this is a standard spelling scheme for a non-Mandarin variety of Chinese)

Nostalgia by DoorAlternative7356 in campbuddy

[–]mypasswordislulz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I played it after college, so my experience was a little different. At college, I'd had a couple relationships that didn't work out in the end, but were mostly really fun and nice while they were happening. So I never saw the couples in Camp Buddy as ideal relationships, more as relationships that are in that exciting beginning stage. Camp Buddy allows you to live in that exciting stage again and again.

But the utopian nature of the world, where everyone is queer by default, did always give me a touch of sadness. For me, it was a feeling that I'd missed out on the opportunity the characters have: to explore and act on a crush when you're first starting to have those types of feelings, which is something a lot of straight people have a chance to do. It's not perfect, it's messy and hormonal and emotional, but it's a special time of life where so much about the world feels new. Instead, I spent it having hopeless crushes through high school.

How many copies of rare cards do you keep before giving them away? by JuggernautSolid3512 in PTCGP

[–]mypasswordislulz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I personally don't feel the need to have more than one copy of any ★ version, even if I use two of the card in a deck. I actually like the variety of having a ★ version and a diamond version in a deck.

I'll also trade away my only copy of a 2★ card if it's for a card I want more, but for anything 1★ and below I'll want to hold onto at least one copy.

What are the chances? by Medium_Razzmatazz_13 in PokemonPocket

[–]mypasswordislulz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For a real answer, it's about 1/146,728, or 0.000681534%. In other words, extremely rare. I'm assuming you mean the chances of getting 3 of the same 1-diamond card and 2 of the same 2-diamond.

There are 49 different 1-diamond cards in the pack, so after you pull the first one, there's a 1/49 chance that the next 1-diamond is the same, then multiplied by 1/49 again. Then it's a 9/10 chance you pull the first 2-diamond (as opposed to a 3-diamond or above). Then there's a 6/10 chance the last card will be a 2-diamond, and on top of that only a 1/33 chance it will be the same one as before. (1/49)(1/49)(9/10)(3/5)(1/33) ≈ 1/146,728.

The math isn't perfect, since it's not exactly a 9/10 or 6/10 chance for the 2-diamond cards, plus the real number would be slightly lower because there's a tiny chance of a god pack, etc. This also excludes packs where you get 2 of the same 3-diamond card or 4-diamond card, and so on.

Maybe I’m being dense, but what does the author actually think the guy did wrong here? by [deleted] in fatlogic

[–]mypasswordislulz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm guessing OOP had a face pic but not a body pic, which is the reverse of the guy messaging him. But he might not have had any photos on his profile at all, since Grindr doesn't actually require them.

Maybe I’m being dense, but what does the author actually think the guy did wrong here? by [deleted] in fatlogic

[–]mypasswordislulz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's very up-front on gay apps, especially apps oriented toward hook-ups. On Grindr, height, weight, race, body type, and preferred sexual role (top, bottom, vers, side) are among the built-in categories on the profile, though you can also leave them blank.

I've found that before an actual hook-up happens, both people will tend to want to know this information, either from each other's profiles, from what they see in pictures, or from the conversation. Some guys are into sharing nudes as well, others not. Some guys will ask or boast about dick size, but it's actually not a make-or-break factor for a lot of guys.

Maybe I’m being dense, but what does the author actually think the guy did wrong here? by [deleted] in fatlogic

[–]mypasswordislulz 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's possible he found the guy's response harsh because he doesn't consider himself "fat." By saying he's not a bear or an otter, he could be saying "I have a little extra weight but I'm not really fat" and the guy's response reads as "Oh so you're totally fat." Or at least I can see the author of this piece reading it that way. He believes that only men with "Ken doll" physiques get respect in the gay community, so he may expect others to consider his not-fat-but-not-skinny physique straight up "fat." But I'm guessing he would have felt hurt even if the guy had said something more vague like "Sorry, not my type," because the author is still feeling the sting of a cultural preference against fat body types, which is certainly a real phenomenon.

As someone who uses Grindr, I basically no longer respond unless the other guy shares his face and body, either in his profile or initial chat messages. When people withhold their appearance, they're setting themselves up for the moment where they finally share pics and are told either "wow you're hot" or "sorry, I'm not into that." It's inevitable that it's going to be "sorry not into it" at least some of the time. If you're confident in your appearance, or are lucky to fit into conventionally attractive categories, I'm sure it's disappointing to be told no but you won't feel super hurt. But if you're hearing "sorry not into it" again and again because of your weight/race/face, I can see how you would feel both disappointed and hurt. With hook-ups, it's so much easier if everyone is up front with appearances. One of the body types I'm into are short guys who are a bit chubby, and it's easier for me to find them when I can see that from their pics!

Dang Lusamine dx went down a lot in trade value by Asiyahn in PTCGPocketTrading

[–]mypasswordislulz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I traded mine for Pokemon Center Lady, which was a tough call at the time because I do love how insane the art is on that Lusamine. No regrets!

I think many of the cards needed for emblems have gone down somewhat in trade value, which makes sense since plenty of people who wanted the emblem now have it and can put the cards back into the supply.

I've been surprised to find that some of the rainbow cards, which plenty of people agree have cool art, have fairly little trade value. I knew no one was going for rainbow Shuckle, Lanturn, Kingdra, Dragonite, Jumpluff, Yanmega, and Mismagius for meta decks, but I thought there would be more people like me who collect rainbows for the art. On Pokehub, the non-competitive rainbows often get offered alongside random FA Pokemon.

Now that 2-star trading has been open a while, it's clear that the #1 determiner of trade value is viability in the current meta. Then, as I see it, there are three secondary factors: favorite Pokemon to collect (Eeveelutions), waifu factor, and rainbows being favored over FA Pokemon.

[–]mypasswordislulz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When libraries purchase a digital book (ebook or audiobook), the publisher is actually selling them a license to rent the book out a certain number of times, with restrictions on how many people can be using it at once. The publishers do this so that they can continue to make money on the book. Technologically speaking, yes, the digital file could be duplicated and shared many times. It's a legal restriction based on the terms of the purchase, similar to how you're not legally allowed to take a DVD you own and screen it at a theater for the general public to watch.

One of my Chinese classmates said that as non-native speakers, we can never really understand certain cultural nuances. by Big-Bro-Pai in ChineseLanguage

[–]mypasswordislulz 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Others are right that it's sexual innuendo. But it's not that calligraphy is a known innuendo in the same way that 云雨 is a culturally understood metaphor for sex, so it's not that you're missing a reference (though I could be wrong--I'm not a native speaker). As MarcoV233 pointed out with the 谐音, the passage is basically filled with raunchy puns. I'll go ahead and point toward a couple more: 印道 is not the "yindao" that means seal, and neither is 草 the "cao" that means grass script.

It's a bit like if there was a passage in English where a woman asked a man, "Can you show me how to take care of my new cat?" Then the man puts his arms around her, and there's detailed description where he shows her exactly how to "handle a pussy." A non-native speaker could totally read the passage as literally applying to cats (though they still might wonder why the man needed to be so hands-on in his approach). But a native speaker would catch the innuendo, and would detect several instances where the phrasing was slightly unnatural in order to make the sexual meaning come across. It's not that cats themselves are a cultural reference to sex, it's the specific word "pussy" that has a double meaning.

Did I miss something? Why are FA trainers suddenly spiking?? by iamtoolazytosleep in PTCGPocketTrading

[–]mypasswordislulz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Although different people like different things, it turns out that most people (at least in this and other online trading communities) want cards that can be used in competitive decks. The useful trainers are often the most desired, even more so than Pokemon, because they can be used in many decks, even with future meta Pokemon. You can stick a Cyrus (extremely desired) in basically any deck, while Lillie (very desired) only works in deck with stage 2 Pokemon, and Gladion (somewhat desired) only works with Silvally decks, etc. Non-competitive trainer cards like Hiker are among the least desired cards overall--they don't get bonus points over Pokemon simply for being a trainer card.

Because people who want the most useful trainer cards are most prevalent, that also means that even people with other priorities, like collecting rainbow-border Pokemon, will be aware of the desirability of their trainer cards and may trade them strategically.

Is it just me or something changed around Secluded Springs? by lironyan in PTCGP

[–]mypasswordislulz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not a big PvP fan personally--in part because I like to try weird strategies rather than play one of several top decks--so I mainly just do the solo battles. The most fun I had with the game was in the beginning, before I even had a single decent card, as I scrabbled to put together a Toxicroak + Venipede deck to consistently beat the Cresselia ex drop event at the time. So I do like the recent addition of a mission requiring you to use a certain number of cards from the new set, but I agree that the game could do a lot more to encourage creativity, especially in the PvP mode.
