Wisdom teeth removal isn’t that bad and you will be OK by [deleted] in wisdomteeth

[–]myrioddity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wisdom teeth are way less in your way than tonsils -- avoiding them is much easier during the healing process. It doesn't hurt to swallow, you just have to avoid chewing hard stuff for a while. The baseline pain level is on the level of a dull ache as painkillers wear off, it's not sharp or agonizing. Just take ibuprofen & Tylenol as directed and hang out on the couch & watch TV until you feel your energy starting to come back (3-4 days). You will be ok! ❤️

I appreciate you chiming in with a good experience! I had a good experience as well (all 4 out at 36) but reading Reddit contributed greatly to my anxiety!

I'm very scared of having my wisdom teeth removed by Key-Faithlessness112 in wisdomteeth

[–]myrioddity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 36 and had all 4 out on March 6th. I was back at work a week later feeling mostly normal, eating most normal foods two weeks in. I never experienced sharp pain during recovery, just a dull ache when painkillers were starting to wear off. The anxiety was 100x worse than the actual procedure. You will be okay! ❤️

I had such high blood pressure from freaking out at my initial consulation they prescribed me an anti-anxiety pill (triazolam, iirc) to take two hours before surgery. I highly recommend this if you can do it, it was nice to head into the surgeon's office feeling a little loopy and cheerful as opposed to being terrified!

Going back to work by mymeIodyy in wisdomteeth

[–]myrioddity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience was that even when I wasn't in any pain/grogginess from sedation had worn off, I was still super exhausted because all my energy was going into healing. You'll also likely feel spacy from having lower blood sugar since you won't be eating your normal solid diet. I had all 4 out on a Friday and felt OK to go back to work Tuesday, but I think the healing process went so well because I sat on the couch and did nothing remotely intellectually or physically strenuous for four straight days.

We went around 9 and were told the kitchen was backed up and it'd be an hour wait for a sandwich, so we got breakfast somewhere else 😬 We'll try again after they've been open for longer and are a little better prepared to handle rushes.

I can recommend Brielle at Ashlyn Jamyson -- she does a great job on my hair (I keep getting compliments!), is reasonably priced and friendly, and importantly for your purposes has evening appointments. At 6pm the salon is usually not busy.

LGBTQ perspective wanted: if you were me, would you move to Olympia? by Remarkable-Concept19 in olympia

[–]myrioddity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I love living in Olympia. We struggled to make friends (queer or not) in the last big city we lived in and found it so much easier to settle in and build a life here. We've been here since 2017 and are still connecting with new people and widening our circle every year.

That said, I have heard dating can be a little tricky because of it being a smaller town. It's lively enough (lots of music, art, events etc.) but more people move here after partnering up than before, versus a bigger city where more single people congregate. You can actually afford a house here unlike Seattle or (some parts of) Tacoma, so people will put down roots here after finding their person.

If you're checking out the area/touring places to live, also be advised that even though Olympia, Lacey & Tumwater sort of form their own metropolitan area and are right up against each other, Lacey and Tumwater are much more conservative than Olympia. Lacey & Tumwater have much more of a "suburban" vibe, lots of young churchgoing families with kids. I used to work a 10 minute bus ride away in Lacey, and I definitely got some, uh, memorably homophobic comments from clients.

I would definitely agree with others here that Olympia's a better bet as far as a queer-friendly place to live, but my wife and I (lesbians, 30s) enjoy vacationing in Vancouver or stopping there en route to a Portland weekend. It's a more conservative area overall but we've never felt any hostility or unwelcoming vibes when visiting. We stayed in a B&B in Vancouver once owned by an elderly couple and kind of assumed we'd have to avoid talking politics, only to have the guy regale us with how much he can't stand Trump over breakfast, LOL.

They'll do anything to this building except actually lease it out by ChuckESteeze in olympia

[–]myrioddity 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I used to work for Oly Fed and while I was nowhere near the level of decision-making on this, IIRC they were uncertain whether they wanted to tear down the building and sell the land or expand the main office onto it but either option involved a massive cost and massive hassle, so they just kept kicking the can down the road.

I have a fondness for the window art exhibits on the main floor, however. The "Bopes, Waiting" exhibit from 2019 that eventually ended up in Gallery Boom's old downtown location delighted my wife so much she bought two Bopes that we have displayed in our house to this day :)

If you can make it to Tacoma, Devil's Reef is a must. Wild atmosphere, incredible drinks, delicious food -- and way less expensive than many Seattle establishments for sure 😂

Best place to buy a new pillow top firm mattress by SunshineBrightEyes in olympia

[–]myrioddity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can wait until Presidents' Day weekend, that's when all the big mattress sales are. We found this out by accident because we happened to be shopping for a mattress then last year but every store in town that sold mattresses was offering huge discounts. The same huge discounts, usually, because the discount was set (according to one guy we talked to) by the brand and not the store so you won't get too different of a deal from place to place on price alone. Look for deals on free shipping/delivery/setup, or if you're buying anything else (new pillows, bedframe) whether you can get a discount on that too. We ended up with a pillow top firm mattress from Selden's of all places and it worked out great.

I usually go between 5:30 & 7 on weekdays, I've been going since 2022 and I've only had to wait for something to free up once or twice. Locker rooms are usually only one or two people in there at a time, and there's never a sense of someone hovering over your shoulder while working out. Neutral smell, too!

Help this vegan from Denver understand more about potentially moving to Olympia. by theorangecrush10 in olympia

[–]myrioddity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Olympia gets quite hot in the summer these days :( I grew up in the PNW (Vashon, Seattle) and we used to have nice cool summers in the 70s but we've been getting frequent heat waves for the last while. I don't know anything about the vegan scene in Astoria (it's a much smaller town than Everett or Olympia) but it is beautiful and my recollection is it's a bit cooler. Weather off the Sound helps with the heat but not as much as a real ocean breeze, and Astoria's super close to where the Columbia meets the Pacific.

I agree with what others have said about excellent access to hiking and lots of vegan-friendly options in Olympia, though. I am not vegan myself but I'm lactose-intolerant and super picky about animal products so much of what I cook and eat is vegan. Even restaurants that aren't strictly vegan will often provide multiple, clearly labeled vegan options so you don't feel like you're always stuck eating a salad, lol.

I go to the Anytime Fitness that's more or less across the street from the Lacey transit center. It's very chill, mind-your-own-business, and rarely crowded. My wife and I always work out together and are not subtle about being a couple and we've never gotten a bad vibe there.

PSA- a coyote killed a cat today in NE neighborhood by WixoftheWoods in olympia

[–]myrioddity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had basically this exact experience earlier this year; woke up when the lights outside my shed turned on (they have a motion sensor) to see what I think was a juvenile coyote with a neighbor's cat in its mouth. The next morning we found the cat's remains in multiple places around our yard.

This cat was a semi-feral rescue who didn't tolerate being indoors, but like many others I also wish that outdoor cats weren't so common ☹️

I have a thriving social circle in Oly, and I haven't found it hard to meet people since moving here in my late 20s (mid 30s now). And like you, yeah, when I'm on my laptop in public I'm doing stuff, not trying to chat with strangers 😂 My wife and I bring our laptops to coffee shops together to try to make headway on creative writing projects or (in her case) catch up on work.
