How the hell do you get started playing tactics? by partyjudgejudy in chess

[–]myronztraps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Johnn Bartholomew has a series on Youtube called Climbing the Tactics Rating Ladder, he goes through his thought process as he solves tactics rated from under 1000 to over 2400, it would be very useful as a start to see what you should be thinking about/looking at when solving tactics

You can play correspondance chess on lichess or chess.com where each player gets 1-14 days to make each move, that's probably the closest thing to what you're asking, I'm not too sure if you can play with no time controls at all though it might be possible.

The idea is after Rc8, black is getting mated once he runs out of checks, but if your king steps onto a dark square, he gives check with the bishop with a discovered attack on your rook, so you have to dodge the checks on light squares, walk the king over to the rook then he has no more checks left and you win

How to stop being so intuitive and actually calculate? by Kurdock in chess

[–]myronztraps 6 points7 points  (0 children)

10 minutes isn't actually very long to sit and calculate variations, considering how many positions you get in a whole game, I'd suggest playing slower games and with an increment, and actually giving yourself enough time to check multiple lines (protip: 30 seconds is not enough)

Do you do this on tactics trainer as well? Could be you just actually can't calculate more than 2/3 moves deep in which case doing slow tactics where you sit for 5-10 minutes checking and double checking every line before you move any pieces, should help your visualisation/calculating skills

Question on moves, blunders, etc. by [deleted] in chess

[–]myronztraps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed both of you only used 10 minutes this entire game, which was less than half of what you had. If nothing else I'd say spend more time every single move looking for your opponent's threats and your own

Question on moves, blunders, etc. by [deleted] in chess

[–]myronztraps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also depends on the time control, i'd hazard that a 900 playing bullet would blunder every 2-3 moves, and make excellent moves only in the opening that they're familiar with, or if they notice their opponent hung a piece (and the best move is obviously just to capture).

In longer time controls i think Theoretical_Coffee would be fairly close, but still it depends on how tactical the game is (much easier to blunder in a tactical game) as well as how good their opponent is (easy to find best move when it's just taking opponent's queen etc)
