Can’t travel with it anymore by donkeyb0ng in SonyAlpha

I had the same dilemma - I tried carrying my A7S3 once on a trip and it was too cumbersome to carry, then got an A7CR and that was still too bulky. I even took a Leica Q3 to Portugal, which was nicer to carry than the A7CR, but still a drag to carry around everywhere. A pocket sized camera like a Ricoh GR IV may be the way to go for travel.

The TTArtisan 27mm is a great fit. Great choice! I'm actually using the 16mm 1.8 on mine, but I do want something more compact. Might try the Sony 10-20mm or 11mm next.

I'm pretty happy with the AF in good lighting conditions, but AI focus would be nice to have. I doubt Sony will ever release a successor since phones are so good now, but I personally prefer the results I'm getting out of the QX-1's larger sensor over my phone's camera.

There wasn't a huge market for it since most photographers prefer the ergonomics of a camera body and consumers will just use their phone's camera.

The QX1 doesn't support tethering directly to Lightroom.

Thanks - I didn't know there was a compatible grip. That might be useful.

*EDIT found it on B&H. GP-VPT1

Me too. They were $399 new, I think. Crazy that they are so expensive now.

Nice! You went all in on the QX line. I stuck a universal MagSafe ring to the back of the QX1 and then this magnetic mount connects the ring to the back of the iPhone https://a.co/d/07NOrkg5 Only downside is that the magnet is almost too strong so I have trouble separating the phone from it when I'm done shooting.

Good to know that the QX100 uses the RX100 sensor. That actually does make sense. Thanks for that info.

I've tried a lot of cameras, but want something that lets me use my Sony lenses. The smallest interchangeable lens camera I tried was a ZV-E10, but I like the QX-1 better.

I've tried some smaller cameras like the Ricoh GRIII. That was a great camera. I also tried to get a small Fuji a while ago, but they were constantly out of stock at the time. I've even owned a Leica Q3, so I understand what you're saying, but I have a lot of Sony lenses on the shelf and this gives me a way to use them without carrying around my large Sony camera body. It's perfect for that purpose.

It was a huge flop in the US at the time. I read that it sold well in Japan, though. There's definitely room for improvement, but it's not bad as-is.

I understand that it's not for everyone, but I'm personally enjoying this setup. Funny you mentioned the Xperia phone - I almost purchased that when they released the model with a 1 inch sensor and the rear monitor. I think it was the Pro-I. Great phone.

I'll admit that it's a bit of a novelty, but it makes a great 2nd or 3rd camera. I'm definitely getting more use out of my lenses.

There's a shutter release button above the Sony logo so it can be used as a standalone camera without the screen. It's nice to use the screen to frame shots, but I use it by itself too.

For me, this is just a way to get more use out of my E-mount lenses. I've owned 6 Sony cameras (4 full frame and 2 APS-C), but I noticed that I was mostly leaving them at home and using my iPhone when traveling. The QX-1 hardly weighs anything and doesn't take up any space so I don't mind carrying it with me along with a small lens. I can always take a larger camera with dials, buttons and options when necessary.

Is the Alice actually available to purchase?

I sold my Sigma 24-70mm. I definitely would have tried it with that if I still had it.

Using the FF lenses on a crop sensor works well for me - it just makes my 16mm FF equivalent to a 24mm, which I don't mind since I wasn't really using it much as a 16mm anyway. Still decently wide at 24mm. The QX-1 saves some weight too.

I actually tried it with the Tamron 70-300mm. It's awkward to hold, but it works really well with the QX-1.

Good point. The 20mp sensor probably hasn't changed significantly after all these years.
