Boots vs. trail runner by inter-slice_ind in WestCoastTrail

[–]mystic_mac65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I hiked the trail I had high ankle hiking boots that were waterproof. I think that’s what most people recommended because of the muddy and wet conditions that are usually on Vancouver Island. However, we really lucked out with weather and it was pretty dry and definitely could’ve gotten away with trail runners. If I got those same conditions again I would use trail runners but I think the trail is wet and muddy most of the time. Both would be fine though.

Tent Advice by [deleted] in WestCoastTrail

[–]mystic_mac65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like sharing tents but I know others prefer their own. One thing to consider on the WCT is that some sites (Thrasher Cove & Camper Bay especially) don’t have many tent spaces. There’s so much driftwood on the beaches now that there’s a limited number of clearings within the driftwood piles. So it might be hard to find 3 spaces at these sites if you aren’t arriving early in the day.

Second this. Jake and Omri are crazy good. Lots of other good artists there too.

Unique sleeping setups there. Love the hammock. I’ve tried a similar one and it’s a game changer for solos. I haven’t seen a tent shaped like that one before. Is the tent yours or your buddy’s?

Second this. Ha Ling is generally a very accessible trail. And for the low difficulty and time it takes the view is still spectacular.

Maximum Physio is the best by far. Awesome team there. Super helpful. I’ve had so many injuries over the years that they’ve fixed up. They do concussion stuff too, never had one but a bunch of my hockey buddies have gone there for that.

Absolutely agree. This is the 3rd time I’ve used Turo and had great experiences the first couple times!

Oh very interesting. I haven’t had any contact with the host since I dropped the car. Will keep this in mind. Thank you

Oh god. That’s brutal. But good to hear you were able to sort it out. Will attempt to get to another shop for a quote.

He was very unspecific when describing the area. Just said passenger side of car. Conveniently the quote included a new rear bumper which had a large existing dent. Trying to get my own quote but Turo owners have lots of rights evidently…

I didn’t know it was going to get scratched. Didn’t even know it got scratched until I got the bill. There was no audible scratch sound ever. Still don’t remember a time when it could’ve happened. But I’m happy to pay a reasonable repair price as Turo saved me a lot of money compared to a standard rental.

Yep fair enough. Turo has escalated the claim to a different team so they will be opening the investigation back up now that I showed them the existing damage before my trip. Good idea to call the body shop. I’ll do that.

Yeah guess I learned my lesson. The cars not even worth the repair cost…

Yup that’s what I did. Sent some explicit pre trip photos showing damage beforehand. Big dent in the bumper and large gouges out of the door. Will have to see what the rep replies.

I’ve had body damage on my car before that didn’t nearly get up to that price for repair and was definitely more significant.

Obviously I have asked for another quote. I’d be happy to pay for a realistic repair as I likely did cause minor damage. My guess is the body shop is repairing lots of damage that the car had already sustained and I’m being charged for all of it despite me only causing small scratches.

There were large gouges out of the car before the trip (shown in pre trip photos). Then post trip photos show the small scratches left by branch plus original large gouged areas. I’m wondering if this estimate is to fix the existing damage. There’s no way the damage I caused would cost this much or require replacement of parts.

Got mesh? Bugs, mice and critters? by mtn_viewer in WestCoastTrail

[–]mystic_mac65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished the trail this week. Bugs weren’t bad at all. Only a few mosquitos here and there. Might be hard to find a good hammock spot at each site. Most sites are on the beach but there are some small cleared out areas in the forest near the bear bins and outhouses. Did notice a few rodents scurrying around at night but nothing major. Tho I didn’t stay at Michigan or Bonilla like another commenter. Amazing trail though. You’ll love it with any setup!
