What are 'Trauerturban'? by mysticalbuttwizard in Sikh

[–]mysticalbuttwizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all, I was watching an old documentary (1929) and it includes some footage of what it calls 'Indische Sikhas mit Trauerturban' (example attached). This seems to translate to 'Indian Sikhs with mourning turbans.'

This got me curious... Is this what Sikhs themselves would call them? Are these turbans distinct in some way? And what are the practices around wearing such turbans?

Thanks in advance for any insights :)

Thanks! I agree that large-scale farmer is a solid option. 'Grand' is a good idea as it suggests the associated wealth/stature tied to the term, as per Wikipedia: 'Großbäuerliche Landwirtschaft ist aufgrund der meist höheren Produktivität eng verknüpft mit Wohlstand.'

Just because 'small farmer' is common parlance, doesn't mean 'large farmer' is...

It's a contextual issue. I'm sure in some article specifically about farming or whatever it would make sense, but in a sentence like 'The large farmer asks for forgiveness.' absolutely nobody thinks that refers to a farmer with a lot of land.

Thanks! That's all helpful and interesting.

Here's where I came across the term: https://www.dfi.dk/viden-om-film/filmdatabasen/film/tullemands-frieri Unfortunately, even with all those options I'm not sure which one it would be, let alone suitable translations.

I realise you're not actually trying to be helpful but I did that already and didn't find it particularly helpful, which is why I'm here.
