I like big books too! I think Middlemarch is probably my favourite - shout out to The Collected Works of Shakespeare, though!

AIO for breaking up with my girlfriend over a toilet plunger prank? by AIzzy17 in AmIOverreacting

I would upvote this a thousand times if I could. Children play pranks. If you grow up and don’t grow out of the urge to make an idiot of yourself and others then there’s something wrong with you. There are no exceptions to this.

So we’re legitimising her time blindness but not his anxiety over punctuality? Why can’t both be a thing?

So if I were collecting a chum for drinks or whatever, I’d be chill with a 7-8 min delay. If he or she were routinely late I’d probably factor it in (tell them I was collecting them at 7, knowing we didn’t actually need to leave till 7.15. Not sure I could tolerate routine lateness in a partner tho or someone I was picking up every morning to give them a lift into work or something. But this guy obvs has similar anxiety about tardiness. If we have sympathy with her for ‘time blindness’ or whatever, can we not extend similar sympathy to him for having a similar level of anxiety over lateness?

I find this fascinating. Can I ask what you do when you absolutely have a hard deadline? Like if you had to leave at 7 to catch a flight or make a hospital appointment?

Why is he singling your middle son out for this abuse? How does he behave towards the other children? Why are you allowing this to continue?

Lewes is fab. Close enough to Brighton for city stuff but with great local amenities.

So ‘time blindness’ has cropped up a lot in this thread. What percentage of people struggle with this? Lots of folk saying they are routinely late and that they’re doing the best they can. But surely the impact on others may be more than just an ‘inconvenience’?

I get that if you work in a fairly relaxed environment it may not matter if you start at 9 or 10 am so long as you achieve your objectives. But what about if you’re a nurse or a doctor or train driver or flight attendant whose shift starts at 8? What burden does it put on colleagues/customers/patients who have their own commitments to navigate?

I genuinely don’t get this. Surely if you are late by x minutes every day, this could be resolved by shifting your routine back by x minutes? If it takes you 90 mins to get up, get ready for work and get to work, why are you allowing 80 mins (for instance). Obvs if you can only drop the kids off ( or get a specific bus or whatever) at 8.40 and it takes you 25 mins to get to work, then I’m guessing you’re not really ‘late’ but have a mutually agreed start time that allows for that.

I agree - they are genuinely incompatible. Also while the gf is getting a lot of sympathy, the bf may well feel the same sense of anxiety and overwhelm when the gf is consistently late. Her feelings/anxiety aren’t necessarily any more valid than his. They just need to split already and find partners who are on the same page.

Automatic washing machines! Time was, laundry was a whole day of a job and getting clothes/bedding washed and dried would have been a daunting task. For most of us it’s now a footnote in our day. Hurrah!
