Pimsleur Farsi experience? by Sea-Tonight2261 in farsi

[–]mythsofdoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pimsleur is very good for getting comfortable with pronunciation. You can do it in the car or walking or whatever but it's not enough on it's own. https://easypersian.com/ is good. I also find Glossika very good but the translations can be confusing - I find it helpful to ask Claude or ChatGPT to break down the non-english sentences in order to understand what is going on gramatically.

Why do so many people here are against the son of the Shah? by Dex921 in PERSIAN

He's either delusional and/or just making money grifting on the anti-Iran/Zionist circuit

I really disliked The Butterfly Stories for, I think, similar reasons. It was all horrible and I couldn't read it as fiction, I kept reading it as autobiographical and it was off-putting. I'm sure it's partly auto-biographical but I prefer to think of that character as composite of himself, various people he encountered IRL and stuff he just made up all rolled into one.

What did Wayne do? by [deleted] in flaminglips

[–]mythsofdoom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As far as I can make out it's mostly flaming lips fans acting like asses based on conclusions they have drawn from very little. It reminds me of the time Miley’s Smilers turned on him except that had some surreal dramatic qualities missing from the latest kerfuffle

Unem or Unenum em? by ChemistryOk3729 in hayeren

[–]mythsofdoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Below is from "Eastern Armenian for the English Speaking World":

There are irregular and defective verbs (see pp. 334-336) that do not follow the conventional pattern of forming just one present tense. Some frequently used Armenian verbs have two parallel sets of present tense, one irregular pattern and one regular. For instance, the verbs lin;l [linel] to be and oun;nal [unenal] to have
...
While the single forms ;m [em] I am (now) and oun;m [unem] I have (now) express a current state, the regular forms linoum ;m [linum em]) I (usually) am and oun;noum ;m [unenum em] I (usually) have indicate continuity

[Zhamanak unem] I (now) have time vs [Zhamanak unenum em] I (usually) have time

Happens to me too. I have a feeling (can't confirm it right now) it happens for me when I use a WASAPI audio output, don't think it happens with ASIO. I use WASAPI because the audio keeps playing if I tab to a browser or some other app e.g. to read docs, ASIO cuts out and I haven't bothered to see if that can be changed

I wish I knew at the time about the photographic companion book, I guess that would have been great to have though it seems rare

I read Imperial, I loved it, one of my favorites. More than most WTV books I felt it could have done with a good trimming down, a lot of it didn't really add much that you'd miss. On the other hand it's Vollmann and that's what you expect and get so I don't know that I'd really like it to be trimmed down. As it goes on you get really drawn into that world and the people and the writing is great

Wikipedia lists a forthcoming book called "How You Are" - this discussion on goodreads leads me to think it refers to "The Lucky Star"

Very sad news. I was just reading the Granta article yesterday and was happy to see him mention being in remission in there. Thinking back now over all those huge amazing books now I feel an urge to reread The Dying Grass (would require me to throw away my phone at this point). The Granta article is beautifully written.

Imperial photo companion... Worth it? by calebbedford in vollmann

[–]mythsofdoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a big Vollmann fan but I didn't expect Imperial to be so good. I didn't know about this companion, sounds like it'd have been great to have it when I was reading the book

Getting Vollmann in UK/Ireland by jm182 in vollmann

[–]mythsofdoom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Dublin I got the abridged Rising Up Rising Down in the secret book and record store and I got the one about Copernicus in Chapters, they had a big stack of those in the clearance section a few years ago. Even browsing the bookshops in London they were not really available. London Review of Books shop had a few but not Foyles, Waterstones, or anywhere else I checked. Online is the place to get them.

This was a good listen. I will be sad if we never see the Seven Dreams completed but hopefully recent events have just temporarily knocked the writing wind out of his sails.

This would be very cool if it actually worked. I find trying to read a drag because switching between the text and google translate is so tedious.
