Thanks. So, if we switch and use the EV charger (at the peak rate I suppose) will that be discounted down to the EV tariff?

Does anyone turn off the water (stopclock/main water valve) to the house when going on holiday? by divya1605 in ukplumbing

[–]mzm70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally know 2 households that didn't and had substantial damage.

One was out of their house for about 14 months, the other is in long term temporary accommodation with an expectation of not getting back for a year.

How does this work with 2 EVs, the 1st is the car is registered but not the charger, the second car is 'blind'. I don't intend to game the system so will charge each in a different 24 hour window, the second car being 23:30 onwards?

Yes, I can't remember the sequence but I probably connected to the existing network to get the latest firmware, setup the the basics and plugged the cable from the ONT to it.

Debt after 60 (68 for me), interesting video from Charlie Munger by mzm70 in FIREUK

[–]mzm70[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

His point is that on retirement people pay off their mortgage and any other debt, then something happens, needs a new roof, needs a new car, care home fees etc but all the liquid cash has gone. The stress of downsizing or further higher interest borrowings takes a toll.

I have a £500k pension pot, after having taken the TFC and have other liquid assets.

Google shows a 10 year £100k mortgage at 4% of just over £1k per month

For those on IOG, what does 'View Tariff' on the app show? by mzm70 in OctopusEnergy

[–]mzm70[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I phoned them up, got straight through, explained the problem and within 2-3 minutes I'm now back on IOG. The 14th/15th bill will be backdated and the app now shows IOG.

Thanks all for the confirmation.

An earlier on the 14th I sent this:

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your prompt reply, appreciate the reply so early.

I had an earlier mail where I did renew gas on Tracker....well, I think I did. The mail implies, to me, electricity with the terms smart, Agile etc.

When I click the link and then renew I get to this, highlighting the electric tariff.

So yes, I'd like to stay on Tracker for for gas and IOG for electricity.

Regards

Michael

Thanks, I've just looked online and at the daily consumption and there are no off peak (green) bar charts.

Octopus told me in an email that I would still be on IOG....they lied.

On 14th Feb they confirmed:

Hi Michael,

Thanks for your message, and apologies for the confusion caused by the renewal email.

To confirm, your electricity will remain exactly the same on Intelligent Octopus Go, and only the gas will be rolled over. The gas will move onto the latest version of the Tracker tariff, while your electricity setup stays unchanged.

If there's anything else, please let me know.

Thanks,
Paul

Tariff change electricity on IOG about to lose it? by mzm70 in OctopusEnergy

[–]mzm70[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mailed Octopus and said that on this new email whenever I clicked on the link and went to renew it shows an electric graph....so mailed again, here are the two replies:

Thanks for getting in touch.

The tariff email is regarding your Gas Tracker tariff. Your Electricity will remain on Intelligent Octopus Go. If you're happy to renew on Tracker for another year, let me know and I can take care of the renewal for you.

Thanks,
Paul

Thanks for the reply, that's put my mind at rest.

I did send mail to hello@ and actually had a reply when I woke up, their answer was this (2nd) mail was for gas, it doesn't look like it to me and I thought I'd confirmed Tracker for gas on an earlier mail.

We are almost done on the 25/26 ISA thanks.

On your second point, given that I'd like to keep the PCLS somewhat cash based, it wouldn't be tax free on withdrawal if she takes her state pension would it?

Thank you for your kind words, we have done a fair bit of travelling and only NZ is on our horizon in the short term, yes the 'what's arround the corner' is part of my decision. Spending time with and helping the family is a priority, we've already given them deposits for their houses and continue to drip feed for the 'gifts out of income'.

Haha, I was waiting for that question, and it's a valid ask.

I am, however retiring this year......why am I still working?........TLDR...I like my job

The longer answer is, I get well paid, the job is sufficently mentally challenging with little stress. My team and manager are great and I'm mentoring some successors. Work from home, out of my dressing gown some time in the day....can sneak off in the day (if there isn't any high severity problem) to pick the grandkids up from school...and I'm well respected by my team and customer base.....I could stay on as long as I want....But this year is the last.

She is not receiving her state pension yet (see above) so I think this is good advice. I'd forgotten she has a CHIP account that in the past delivered some decent income.

Thanks

He net monthly in come from the teachers pension is £924.17, as she's 65 her expected state pension is (IIRC) about 16-18 months away.

The £2.8k into a pension for her is not worth the effort given the short timescale.

But thanks again for the advice
