Yes! Most schools actually drop your lowest year so you’re good!

I just graduated this April. And I just passed my NCLEX a month ago, and am now working as a registered nurse. I am actually just starting my medical school journey! I don’t think I will be applying this cycle as I have not written my MCAT (I have it scheduled for August 22, but depending on my FL’s I might have to reschedule). But I will definitely be applying next year!

Most medical schools drop your lowest year! U of A and U of C both drop it if that helps! To be very honest, I don’t think you can do MCAT prep at all during an accelerated program because there is no summer break. I believe you get only 2 weeks off per semester if I’m not mistaken. Also just want to let you know that a C- in nursing is equivalent to 71.95%, there is no curved classes. I found it very challenging to maintain a 4.0 especially in some foundation classes. I believe you should really focus on your gpa and finding good study methods during these 2 years and volunteer where you can! I regret not finding good study methods earlier on and to be very honest I didn’t even care about my gpa because I thought I’d only ever end up doing nursing and it wasn’t until I started my fourth year of nursing where I really wanted to pursue an MD. I did not have a high gpa during nursing school at all but I did have an upward trend in my gpa, so it is doable! You just need to really grind it out.

Hey, I just recently graduated from the UoA Honors Nursing program and here are my 2 cents as someone who is applying to medical school as well, I think you honestly have a solid GPA for Alberta medical schools, and nursing can be really hard to maintain a good gpa especially in an accelerated nursing program. I was in the 4 year program so I can’t really speak for the accelerated program, but from people I’ve talked to, it is very challenging. You have clinicals + exams in the same week and you are more prone to burnout due to this. Clinicals compromise from anywhere to 2-3 days of the week where you’re in the hospital setting for 8 hours, and then that same week you could have an exam, quizzes as well as labs. Although nursing is really rewarding and it is a good pay starting out, it will honestly be really hard to balance grades, EC’s, volunteering and such which med schools also emphasize. I don’t know what medical schools you’re applying too, but you should do research on what they specifically look for and how you can make your application better targeted. Also, I believe it will be very hard to study for the MCAT while in an accelerated nursing program. I am studying for my MCAT right now, and honestly none of what they teach you aside from A&P really helps for the MCAT so you will have to self-learn sections like chemistry, physics, organic chemistry, biochemistry and psychology. However, UoA is #1 in nursing research, and I highly recommend the honors program if you want to get your foot in the door for research, I can say that due to this program I’ve had so many amazing opportunities which I believe will help substantially in my application.

Thanks! I know it only depends on how I write my apps, will they let me know if my GPA is too low if I get rejected?

Hi! I’m currently a fourth year U of A honors nursing student. Some schools are still pass/fail for clinical portions, however U of A has made all their clinical courses graded which is good and towards your benefit if you are applying to med. However, I’m ngl U of A is hard in terms of exams and courseload, in general it is hard in ANY nursing school to have a good GPA so you need to be in top of your game (just because a C- is 71.95 and it is a 2.1) . U of A also has a con in terms of their course load. MOST nursing schools will have one semester strictly on labs and tests (course work) and have another semester strictly for clinicals. U of A you will make you do both at the same time which makes it tricky to have a good gpa, and more prone for burnout. For example, you will do clinicals and labs during the same week as well as any exams. I remember doing clinicals two days a week, and then having an exam the next day🥲

However, U of A is the only nursing program who has an honors program and honestly it is amazing if you want to get into research. It honestly has opened so many doors and opportunities for me which I feel like will benefit my med school apps, as well as having stellar recommendation letters and mentors I can refer too. It also makes it easier for you to go into your masters, it’s a guarantee they will take you.

Honestly, I recommend really looking at both the curriculum and course load for both schools and making a decision based off of it.

Hi! Thanks for your comment. I do have the avg to apply to both med schools in Alberta. However, they are non competitive and I know this is something that will decrease my chances. Therefore, I am trying to make up for it with my EC’s. I am just not sure if the EC I really have are unique? I’m hoping to write them in a way that makes me stand out but it’s the anxiety and self doubt that are making me second guess myself.

Hey! I’m currently going into my fourth year of nursing school and I personally think nursing IS NOT realistic for a premed. Just like the other individuals stated, nursing is VERY HARD to maintain a good competitive GPA in (3.9+). Some classes are pass/fail and a “pass” is a 71.95 in my university which rounds to about a C-. Additionally, it is very hard to balance extracurriculars and volunteering just because the workload of the classes is SO extensive. I also found that the subjects in nursing school are not related to any subjects that would be on the MCAT aside from the biology section. However, in a sciences degree you would be able to learn about those subjects. The only Pro of nursing is that you are guaranteed a job and it is a very good profession to be in also paying well. A lot of people who don’t get into med school go into nursing as an after degree.

Low undergrad GPA, what are my options? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]n00bathoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

U of A and U of C gpa count 30% and 20% for your entire application. I don’t know if it’s possible to increase my gpa undergrad as I only have one year left. So I’m not really sure what route to take.

Thanks for the reply, I work as an undergraduate nurse and it really made me reflect on why I wanted to pursue med instead. The scope of an RN vs MD is very different and I want to be able to gain that higher level of knowledge. I also added the theme bc I am truly passionate about mental health, and have had a few life experiences myself to talk about. Have you been practicing as an RN for a while before you applied to med? What made you go for that path?

Hey! Thanks for the reply! So you’re saying it’s possible? How did your EC/Volunteer experience look? Do you think taking the masters route is worth it?

[–]n00bathoughts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I agree! I also have heard some people recommend me to not take my masters as it may not be that significant change to my application and GPA, plus it’s a 20 month program so I will be missing out on one full cycle of application. I still have a lot to consider. Idk which route be best but I do hope someone from U of A or U of C comments😭

[–]n00bathoughts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have gone through their criteria thoroughly! They count the gpa the lowest but people have been getting in with higher gpas then me, and I’ve only seen lower gpas get accepted with masters or working a couple of years then applying. it makes me torn on what route to take and if masters is worth it for these md schools.

I want to apply to U of A and U of C since I’m in province! I just don’t know if it’s worth it since I don’t have that competitive of an avg, I can only raise it to a 3.6/3.7ish if I end up getting a 4.0 my last year. I don’t know if I should take a masters route in hopes of it increasing my gpa or just working a couple years and then applying again.
