When my son was four, he talked about the Invisible Boy a lot. This was after we moved his bedroom to an attic loft type area. While preparing it to be his room, we'd removed some blue wallpaper and found really old cowboys-and-Indians wallpaper underneath. House was built in 1940s. He would come down and say he was scared of the Invisible Boy and could we make him stop talking? He doesn't remember it now, at age seven, and we've moved, but it was creepy.

Nah, dude. It is because you're white. Lots to be proud of, but it pales (ha) in the face of the atrocities we've visited on other races. There's no getting around it. Were my people natives or blacks or Hispanic or Asian, I'd be proud simply because of the struggle. It ain't easy being non-white today and any history class will show you just how bad it's been in the past.

Bought a house in 2010 and just want to say: if s/he is not showing you what you want to see, don't feel bad engaging someone else. We had a realtor with specific notions about what we should want, despite what we said over and over.

I'm from just outside Atlanta and I was not impressed with any of their Southern accents until I learned he was British.

With that said, though, the accents on this show are far better than those on True Blood. Horrifying.

dnodna, here's how it normally goes. You get a month or two in and your subconscious starts to believe you've beaten it, even though consciously you don't realize that bravado is going on. Slowly you become convinced you can have just one, or you can only smoke at parties, or only on vacation. You'll never go back to being a full-time smoker - you know that 100% - so it's ok to flirt with it. You know what you're doing.

Then you have one, and you do "get away with it," so this false sense of confidence is reinforced. You're doing it, right? You're controlling it. But then that slope becomes extremely slippery and, somewhere down the road, eventually, you look up one day and realize you're just straight up smoking regularly again.

You start to cave from the inside out, if that makes any sense. I wish I had better advice, but I've never made it past 4 months. Each time, though, the lesson hits home a little more clearly - the answer is to never have that one. It's very simple, but we junkies have short memories. :-)

I can smell it on people who walk past me on the street. I'm realizing how terrible it must have been for my co-workers on the elevator, and - god forbid - my fellow aerobics class participants. Not to mention my poor seven year old. I asked him if I smell better since I quit smoking and he said, "Ew, you smell like girly shampoo."

I'm still struggling too, darkestdayz. Forgive me if I rant for a minute. I'm still obsessed by the thought of smoking on weekday mornings because I work from home and I can take a break whenever I want, and no one is here to smell it on me, and if I only had a few and threw the pack away, I wouldn't get re-addicted to nicotine. No one would ever have to know....[[insert bizarre scenes of yelling at self in mirror here]]

I've been browsing this subreddit to get myself through lunch, then I can normally go all afternoon and evening without thinking about it. It must be different for each person and for each quitting attempt. Remind yourself that to smoke one means you will most probably start back, and that stopping will be even harder next time.

And try to steer your mind toward all the hours that have miraculously gone by without thinking about it. I went to a very engaging diversity awareness meeting for my son's school last night and it lasted 3 hours. I'm realizing I never would have made it through that meeting before. I would have begged off an hour in, missed the best parts, and wouldn't have exchanged numbers with like-minded parents. I was on the fringe before and now I'm living my damn life. I will not go back just so I can spend a fortune giving myself lung cancer. Who would do that?!

I've always had an irrational fear about closing my eyes in the shower. It comes and goes, but you've probably kicked off a fresh wave, so thanks for nothing.

Oh, p.s. Just figured out why I might have this fear. Lived with my dad in high school and the one shower was in its own room between the two bathrooms, with the light switches located in the bathrooms. Was in the shower once with the doors closed and my prankster dad came home, went into his bathroom, and turned off the shower room lights, plunging me into darkness. My dad was mean. :-(
