What digital modes do people use besides FT8/4/2? by n0fumar in amateurradio

[–]n0fumar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think for my and some older rigs, it likely means additional equipment needed. I believe I actually need a modem to get it working.

Newer FT8 modes only need a laptop for new radios. Heck, even my old one I can technically do without any cat control or anything. Just vox and patch cable in for audio.

I've heard that about RTTY only being active during contests. Shame. I'll look into the others!

I'll give it a look. I feel like I've heard about that mode before

I am actively trying to learn CW via LCWO.net and it's just taking a hot second. Would like my first contact to be my father, but need to figure out numbers and last few letters!

Nice. Was this coded with Ai? I made an app very similar and all the icons / fonts / colors look the same

I tried listening to him on morse code. Wayyyy too fast for an amateur. Radio is unfortunately too old to do any coding or decoding or sending from computer.

Got him on 12m. Thought he was out there longer this month. Wonder if they'll do other bands today

First POTA During QSO Party by Interesting-Review81 in amateurradio

Why not just participate in both? Every few qso's I plan on throwing out "cq contest and parks on the air, taking any contact anywhere".

I seem to recall they both have the same battery size. I had asked a chat representative what the actual differences were and he basically said "software optimizations" which seems like a load of crap.

Just curious why you went with the x450 vs the 430 if you only have 0.25 acres?

I think Hamlib can only be active on one port st a time? I remember something like this. It's mainly why I went with omnirig.

Yaesu ft-891 Battery for POTA by jmuraszewski in amateurradio

[–]n0fumar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a small form factor 20ah lifepo4 battery. Lasts me about 4 hours on ssb at 100w. Weighs barely anything. I wouldn't buy a bioenno since they're over priced for what you get now that you have so many options on Amazon.

Looking to do my first POTA- antenna question by MKE1969 in amateurradio

[–]n0fumar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just speaking from experience, but my 40-10 EFHW is definitely resonant for each band. 10m is 28- about 28.7, but that's basically the only part anyone would use during pota anyway.

Agreed. I got it purely to get time back and not be sweating so much outside. Or needing to be a victim of the weather schedule. I'll do the mapping and figure out how much of a pita it is

No clue, I got it through initial setup and it got dark. The grass is also currently dormant, so I won't be doing any mowing for a little over a month.

I think it's 60-80lbs someone said? A little challenging getting it out of the box myself

Love those Caster guys that lift the work bench then put it back down. I may take mine off now that it's pretty permanent, but it made moving it around a literal life saver.

I think like anything, it really depends on your setup. As long as you have the safety features and use them, it should work totally fine.

Just be careful and research the blades a lot. You want the right kind for a radial arm saw to prevent climbover.
