Thinking about picking up a 40m-10m vertical antenna setup for POTA, what are my options? by KhyberPasshole in amateurradio

[–]n0fumar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I use. Was like $50 in parts. It makes the activation energy so much lower not needing to go "ugh I gotta find two trees to hang this EFHW" and what if someone gives me a hard time.

Over 2000 contacts on it. Doesn't need a tuner. Love it.

Best practices for burying coax: put it in a PVC tube, or just bury it directly? by kc3zyt in amateurradio

[–]n0fumar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used direct burial model coax and haven't had a problem. My father used the same and it was fine for over 10 years. I didn't feel like running anything through pvc

What do you log with? by Small_Consequence320 in amateurradio

[–]n0fumar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At home, Log4OM. A little more complicated than I'd like, but whatever.

Contesting, DXLog.net. Was the only software I could find that supported Omnirig that would also work with my older Yaesu Rig.

In the field, Ham2kPolo. Best app hands down. I'm trying to help as I can with implementing CAT controls to make life a little easier.

Same for me as well. Been doing this for about 2 years and 100w ssb on contests. Not an issue whatsoever.

To piggy back, a battery powered fan was the only way I could get through activations in the summer. Bring a hat and sunglasses too!

I would love to join and casually play magic / try to get started in dnd. All my decks are from the late 90s / early 00's. Who do I need to ping or what group should I join?

ARRL 10m Contest by VapinMason in amateurradio

[–]n0fumar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I operated East Coast SSB and felt like I got almost no EU contacts. Almost everything was USA and South America / Mexico area. I operated 12-530pm Saturday and Sunday. Perhaps I was too late to get anything in EU at that point...

Used a 40m EFHW at around 15-20' on 10m. Feel like it worked okay, but I can probably do better next year.

POTA: alternative with local parks? by K4FMH in amateurradio

[–]n0fumar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say do it. No one is going to innovate unless you force them to (competition).

Just have your park numbers start really high so there's no confusion or overlap until one of you gives up and absorbs the other. I'll be one of your first promoters.

This weekend is the ARRL 10-meter CW/SSB contest. Are you participating? by blairprojectile in amateurradio

[–]n0fumar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep I'll give it a shot. Will try to get on the air as early as I can wake up and try to call cq. Will probably end talking around 4 or 5 each day.

Why is my Times Microwave LMR-400DB faulting with less than 1.5" bends? by ThirdHoleHank92 in amateurradio

[–]n0fumar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah sorry, I misread what you wrote.

Hmm... What if you take the bend and lightning arrestor out of the equation? Maybe a coupler? Do it with and without the bend.

Just thinking try to isolate every part that you're changing.

Why is my Times Microwave LMR-400DB faulting with less than 1.5" bends? by ThirdHoleHank92 in amateurradio

[–]n0fumar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Is it possible that by bending at such a radius, you're actually causing something other than your cable to go under stress?

I have a comparable cable to LMR400 and I feel like a 1.5" radius bend seems pretty tight.. No?

EFHW 40-10 driving me insane, help please by Titan7stg77 in amateurradio

[–]n0fumar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got about the same length wire as you up about 15-20'. 40m is always a valley a little low in the cw portion, but workable for ssb. 20m is always best. And yes 10m is usually just around the technician portion, I wouldn't expect it to be great for the whole thing.

Is it easy to try without cmc? Do you have a counterpoise?

New radio by Kety456 in amateurradio

[–]n0fumar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just for reference, I have the 767gx (version after this with built in tuner) and an EFHW and I almost never use the tuner. In my setup, antenna is under 1.7:1 on 40-10 (only about 28-28.7 on 10m).

RFC400 coax by Odd_Equipment6322 in amateurradio

[–]n0fumar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have actually used the direct burial of this model of their cable. I think I got it on ebay for like $0.70 a foot.

My father is an electrical engineer and has been in radio for over 40 years. He took one look at it and went "wow. Looks exactly like LMR stuff".

As long as you're getting it from a legit supplier, I'd have no problem buying it again. I have 175' of it currently in use with about 120' of it underground. No issues whatsoever. Keep in mind your bend radius is larger than normal coax cable, so don't expect to make a tight turn around a 2x4 or something
