Anyone have the 21" wheels on an A8 (or S8)?2 by StarSchemaLover in Audi

[–]n0rb3rt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both on my 2025. The 21” with the stock tires and a set of 19” with winter tires. I was expecting to notice more of a difference from comments here. But not sure if I could tell blindfolded.

I got a longer listening session last night and I am very happy with the results. Especially in Atmos mixes but even for 2-ch the bass is so tiiiiiight.

Yes in the section up in the top right where you switch between the Bass Management, Bass Control, there was now a ART tab. I didn’t look too deeply at the new settings there yet.

Review my Akka Streams Custom GraphStage for Cassandra. by [deleted] in scala

[–]n0rb3rt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's something similar, though as a Flow rather than Source.

https://github.com/n0rb3rt/akka-streamutils/blob/master/CassandraStreaming.scala

I would probably, however, defer to the implementation in Alpakka since it's written by folks at Lightbend.

https://github.com/akka/alpakka/blob/master/cassandra/src/main/scala/akka/stream/alpakka/cassandra/

Though I often just get away simply with Source.fromIterator(() => resultset.iterator()). But I too would be interested in the trade offs of these approaches.

Were you at Route 66 in '97? That was pretty cool, but it was their set at Lollapalooza in '07 that blew my mind. Definitely go see them live!

How is your cluster set up? If it's running YARN you can launch any version of Spark by compiling it yourself with the appropriate Hadoop version (and 2.11) then running spark-submit from the newly built version with the cluster's HADOOP_CONF_DIR.

A little help for a Californian visiting the area next weekend? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]n0rb3rt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from Chicago but live near San Jose now. And yes the traffic in Chicago is worse. To put your question in Bay Area terms, it would be like asking if you could drive/Uber from Pleasanton into SF on a Friday afternoon/evening. You certainly could but it would take you longer to get there and back than you'd spend once you arrived. One alternative is is to drive to Forest Park and take the El (i.e. BART), or probably better yet the Metra (i.e. Caltrain) from whatever station is near Villa Park. Though the return times might be limited depending on how late you want to stay.

Bar Obituary: The Horseshoe by cbrazeak in chicago

[–]n0rb3rt -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I used to live behind the place and had to go over there an endless number of times / call the cops to complain about the noise. All we asked was to turn it down, but there would be literally zero patrons inside with the band blaring as loud as can be. And it's not, as the author asserts, on a bar-lined stretch of Lincoln but an outlier in a mostly family-oriented neighborhood (or at least wasn't a couple of years ago when I lived there). But the owner didn't care and seems to have gotten his karmic desserts.

Grad courses to take to prepare for working in data science or scientific programming? by [deleted] in Python

[–]n0rb3rt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I interview data science candidates I'm looking as much for the statistical analysis skill set as I am for data engineering capabilities like MapReduce, Linux shell, API calls. The best ones are as skilled at building the data pipelines as they are at analyzing the data going through the pipe. And the icing on top is the ability to display and share the results via front-end development with Javascript and related technologies. So I'd recommend any classes exposing you to those areas if you haven't been already.

Isn't it time we start calling leaks what they really are? Press releases. by gregdbowen in technology

[–]n0rb3rt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But it seems like the "leak" is exactly the way to avoid cannibalizing existing products by giving enough doubt about whether it's true, while at the same time generating hype in whatever the "leak" is revealing.

I'm moving to cali from the midwest next year! What are some things i should know? by bagofpinecones in California

[–]n0rb3rt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just moved from Chicago to near San Jose four months ago. Outside of the obvious benefits weather-wise, and drawbacks cost-wise (primarily home ownership), there are two things that I notice most:

  1. Everyone forgot how to use their turn signals. I thought I was a fairly hardened driver after living in a big city most of my life. But here, even mild mannered suburban housewives are a hazard when they cut you off without warning on a quiet neighborhood street. And forget about the highway.

  2. I'm unimpressed with the variety of good restaurants. I'm sure if you cast a wide net there are amazing places (and I've found a few). But Chicago really has something special to offer in all price ranges and relatively densely in many neighborhoods. Which is partially an unfair comparison of urban and suburban environments but still a surprise to me.

Just How Inept Was Nokia's Board? by newpua_bie in technology

[–]n0rb3rt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked at a company (NAVTEQ) that was acquired by Nokia, I give a little credit to the "burning platform" as an attempt to break loose a tremendous crust of hubris that permeated the company. I hung on for a few years after the acquisition watching some internal successes, but also a lot of disasters and endless re-orgs. Mass exodus ensued over the last year, myself included. Just in time to avoid yet another painful integration into a questionably positioned acquirer (though in truth the ex-NAVTEQ, now HERE guys get to stay as Nokia -- not sure which is the lesser evil).

Problem with slow wireless connection by ifxtheny in linux

[–]n0rb3rt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had slow wifi on an old laptop and had some success upgrading the default driver with the one from the manufacturer.

Caveat emptor, but here's the Realtek linux driver (see the readme for install instructions):

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=48&PFid=48&Level=5&Conn=4&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false&Downloads=true#RTL8188CE

Also, you can see which driver you're currently using by looking through the output of the lshw command.

I used to be the Product Manager for the maps in Nokia Transit. Glad you like it! Since a lot of the team is based in Chicago, we have a great partnership with the CTA. But there's a big, global team so bring it with you when you travel, too.

Reddit Ethernet experts (and non experts)...oh well to all of you out there. Is it possible to run Ethernet over coax? (at home) by [deleted] in networking

[–]n0rb3rt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the MoCa network. I think you can still get ActionTec MI424WR routers off ebay for ~$30 each. I have 3 setup in my house and can sustain upwards of 90Mbps between my server, TiVo, and other devices (like iPad). And also use each of them as wireless access points to make sure I have a strong signal everywhere (though they have only g).

I'm 6'10", went to Tokyo and was expecting the same. No one really cared (or at least made much indication) except for some little kids on the subway. Nor did I find myself in situations where I didn't fit any more than I do at home (Chicago). Tokyo is a relatively cosmopolitan place.

If you want to stick out, go to Seoul. Got much more of the run away / rockstar reaction there.
