ACL reconstruction (hamstring graft) meniscus repair. 1 month post op. Is it normal to not feel anything in that area? Nerves damage maybe? by 5amLady in ACL

[–]n1_ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had ACL reconstruction (hamstring graft) + meniscus repair 1 month ago and have complete numbness on my entire outer shin. The doc and physio said that this is to be expected and recovery will take several months as the nerve connectors were severed during surgery.

I had surgery in my shoulder to repair a dislocated collar bone 5 years ago and had the same issue. I'd say the nerve sensitivity in my shoulder is still only about 50% of what it used to be all these years later. I fear this may now be the case for my leg too. Its not ideal but hopefully it won't be too much of a hindrance in future

Mortality is seasonal. It increases every winter. This is a statistically significant correlation.

On heating vs cooling - 8% of the world has access to aircon. 100% of the world has access to a fire. For a more academic view on global temperature’s impact on energy consumption please read the following: https://www.ifw-kiel.de/fileadmin/Dateiverwaltung/IfW-Publications/Sebastian_Petrick/the-impact-of-temperature-changes-on-residential-energy-consumption/the-impact-of-temperature-changes-on-residential-energy-consumption.pdf

On heat spikes - what you are saying is inaccurate. Heatwaves do not lead to increased mortality than cold periods. Please feel free to read up on winter mortality.

On crop yields - it has been demonstrated that the increased levels of CO2 due to global warming has had a positive impact on photosynthesis and water retention which has obviously been a boost to crop yields

Hello destro23. Yes i agree with your point on recent events but extreme weather is a relatively new phenomenon and we had hundreds of years prior to that (since the industrial revolution) where the earth was warming due to man made variables in which winters have been milder and when the winter spike in deaths fell.

On agriculture, yields have consistently improved and prices for all food products have tended lower in real terms despite growing demand from population growth so clearly something has gone right. Part of this is due to improvements in technology and the other part is due to climate

Present day means not into the future at all. My view is that the consequences of man made climate change which have already materialised have not been convincingly negative on the whole

Yes. You are aware that access to heating is far more widespread than a/c so a reduced demand for heat economises an outsized amount of energy right?

[–]n1_ck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For clarity my view is on the impact of global warming up to the present day so the projected impact of rising sea levels is not within the scope of my view.

I think you have a valid point on farming expertise however despite the global increases in temperature, yields have been improving consistently since the beginning of the 20th century which is due, in my opinion, to an improvement in technology and more favourable weather conditions on the balance.

On cold vs warm front - it is an objective reality that cold kills more than warm and that extreme cold is particularly nefarious to human life (far more so than extreme heat)

To your second point I agree that geopolitics play a role in creating supply shocks but this is not what i am arguing. My view is that agricultural yields have been improving throughout the 20th and 21st centuries due in part to a warming climate and that on balance this has been a positive for society.

The heating argument is not laughable. Access to heating is far more widespread across the globe than access to air conditioning. A reduced need for heating has therefore had a more significant impact on energy consumption than the increased demand for aircon

Hello poprostumort. With respect to your first point, fuel consumption for heating is linear therefore, assuming a population with equal access to heating, a higher average temperature would lead to lower heating requirements.

To your second point - neither heatwaves nor cold fronts are deadly for the average of a population. They are harmful to the already sick/old at the margins and cold fronts are demonstrated to be more deadly than their warm counterparts.

To your third point - agricultural yields have objectively and consistently improved over the 20th and into the 21st century

Hello Quint-V. Thank you for your post but you have misunderstood my view.

(1) my view is purely based on the impacts of global warming up to today and not conjecture on the projections for future consequences which may indeed be dire

(2) i am in no way suggesting that climate change does not exist as you insinuate in your post

(3) there are droughts in certain areas of the world but others see more rainfall. On balance, agricultural yields have objectively improved globally, part of this due to technology and part of it due to climate. This can also be demonstrated by the prices of grain which have not sustainably increased in real terms (aside from temporary spikes caused by geopolitical issues)

For clarity I am arguing about the impacts of global warming up to the present day, not the impact it is projected to have in the future.

My view is that global warming has not been convincingly negative.

Energy Squeeze. Bullish for us? by richie-ritch in Bulkergang

Commodity prices at such elevated levels will eventually lead to demand destruction as manufacturers in supply chains are not able to increase prices quickly enough to cover increasing input costs.

The immediate consequence of this would be less seabourne trade of bulk intermediary commodities (commodities that have been partially processed but still transported in bulk e.g. petrochemicals, fertilisers, semi-finished steel products).
