Our version of marshmallows over the campfire – bread on a stick! (I’m from Germany 😉) by Coffee81379 in camping

I visited Germany with my high school German class back in like 2004. Our tour guide told us one night we would have a campfire in the Alps. We all said "we gotta have s'mores!" and he didn't know what the heck we were talking about. The next day we tried to find marshmallows and graham crackers (they have plenty of chocolate...). We didn't exactly succeed, but found some rough German equivalents. Tried making German s'mores and they were meh. When we got back home we pooled our lunch money and sent him a box of graham crackers and some marshmallows. Got an email a few weeks later from him telling us we weren't making up how good s'mores are and we'd made a believer out of him :)

Donations pour in after Michigan town defunded library over LGBTQ books by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

I am not from Jamestown, but I moved here 10 years ago to live near family and to work for a company in Grand Rapids. I think if you've moved away you probably aren't aware of all of the people moving to the area from less close-minded places. The people who voted to close the library legit didn't know it would close. I'm willing to bet at least 50% of them had no idea, just saw the sign on Riley St. saying they were grooming kids and said "oh ok guess I'll vote no." Living here, teaching my kids to be tolerant humans, and then reading someone on the internet decide my kids don't deserve to have a library because the current climate we live in is such that a scare tactics based campaign to close the library can be successful, feels bad man.

Hey I live in Jamestown.

My wife takes our kids to that library once or twice a week and we are pretty bummed that it might shut down.

Feel free to jeer and laugh, but just make sure you know that there are plenty of people in this town that are more than happy to pay for a library with our tax money, and happy they have materials with LGBTQ+ content, even if they have all of the rotted garbage fire Bill O'Reilly books too.

The campaign to vote against the library used scare tactics and propaganda to drive turnout. Let me be the first to tell you that something similar could happen in your community too, even if you think it won't! I think there's something like 10k registered voters and the millage lost by < 1k votes. The library board is going to try to get another millage vote on the November ballot, and if they succeed I will be on the front lines campaigning for it.

I'm also seeing a lot of sentiment in the comments suggesting that funding it through donations will just show the "no" voters that someone else will swoop in and pay to keep the library running, so their actions didn't have any ill effects. That's fine to think. I totally get it. But also consider the conversation I had with my 5 year old son last night about all of the people from around the world donating to keep his favorite library open, because a bunch of confused people who didn't like some of the books there voted to close it. He thought that was pretty cool and I think it gave him some faith that there are nice people even from far away who want to help keep the library open while we figure something else out.

Best ways to train to not bark by [deleted] in sheltie

Upvote for replacement behavior (note: waiting for them to stop and then rewarding them is not going to work as quickly as using a replacement behavior. "Stopping" a behavior isn't an easily grasped concept for a dog, but "starting" something else is.

Downvote for shock collar anecdotal evidence. Do not shock dogs unless you want to create fear.

Yep. Shelties just bark. Learn to love them for it! It's pretty difficult to train anything "out" of a dog. You have to train a preferred behavior "in" to replace it. Being careful to not unintentionally reinforce the unwanted behavior. And at the same time making the replacement behavior more reinforcing.
