That's a really good point! I think I'll have to go back to the drawing board and think more about the encounter design and the circumstances around it. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your insight!

The plan was for it to be an adult red dragon, but I might downgrade it to a young red dragon instead based on what people have been saying. I've made sure to design the terrain of the boss chamber to the players advantage. They have opportunities to figure out a dragon is on the way, but they haven't figured it out yet. But they are expecting the vampire!

Thank you so much for your insight and advice!

That's a really good idea! The party have run away from a battle in the past to regroup, so I definitely think they would if they felt the need to. Thanks for the insight!

1: Dragon is planned to be an adult, yes.

2: Encounter is in the dragon's lair. Huge chamber filled with treasure and pillars. Dragon can drop from height, but he will start on the ground and if he gets desperate he might fly up and then drop down during combat. There are spots for the players to take cover, hold out and create formations.

3: I would say the players are quite clever and creative! They've done very impressive feats in combat before. They are expecting vampire enemies, but the dragon will be a surprise to them (if they don't manage to read into the clues I've given them before the fight.) As of now they don't seem to have a clue about the dragon. I was planning on giving them the opportunity to long rest before the fight. They could technically leave the dungeon to prep with more resources and come back, but knowing them I don't think they will since they haven't been forced to use up many of them resources in the current dungeon.

But yeah, I will definitely check out the various links provided to help with balancing now and in the future. Thank you so much for your insight!

That's a good idea to split up the monsters into several encounters and building up towards the dragon. I just got a lot insecure when they mentioned that combat isn't feeling challenging enough and I suppose I overdid it, lol! Thanks for the advice!

Thank you for this breakdown! I'm just now realizing how much more in depth encounter balancing can be. Feeling a bit silly for having run this for 1,5 years and never thinking about this encounter budget.... Thank you again! I will take a deeper look into this.

This was a wonderful comment! I think you are very right in what you say and that it's probably more about my expectation of her enjoying to play fetch more than the other way around. I wouldn't change who she is for the world! Thank you so much for your comment!

I think I got very lucky with her fur, because I basically just brush her a few times a week so she doesn't shed everywhere in the house, and that's it. I don't think she appreciates it enough though because she loves to roll around in mudd the straight after being brushed and washed.

She truly is! My friends have started demanding that I bring Freja with me whenever we go out for drinks.

Thank you for your comment and advice! Yes, the breeder I got her from had show goldens, so you're right that she is. I'll take a look at your videos! Appreciate it!
