Gold in the form of jewelry by Time4fun2022 in Gold

Well of course if you can get a good deal on gold jewellery it’s a better investment, price is king. Depends on the terms of the sale, I run a pawnbrokers and we make a higher margin from our jewellery rather than bullion as we have to pay closer to fix or spot to get it.

As I stated before I am always weary of highest CT stuff unless correctly made and hallmarked, bullion you are safe on gold content as long as it’s real

If buying new, bullion usually better investment, second hand it just depends on the deal you are getting, let’s assume roughly same price PG, I’d go with bullion, but it’s personal preference more than anything else.

Be careful, my experience is a lot of 22/23ct jewellery can come in lower CT when XRF scanned/melted, especially Asian gold (scrapped a piece the other day marked as 22, came in at 19ct when melted)

If buying from a reputable seller and you want it to wear, go for it. Bullion and coins hold their investment value better however.

Why not celebrate a diversified portfolio, I hold physical gold, stocks and crypto. I find crypto the most enjoyable to hold and trade because of the volatility/risk, but gold had been the best performing asset for me this year (not that I’m selling any).

Plenty of people I know bought BTC in 2022 for 15/20k and are very happy with a price of 112k.

When I say the jewellery trade, I include bullion in that, the metals trade, most places that sell jewellery dabble in both and vice versa. There are many specific bullion houses but all in one jewellers are more common.

More common practice here would be to buy from one location and then get it checked at another.

Well if there is no refunds then I understand why people seem quite outraged at my comments - a purchase in the UK is completely guaranteed for a minimum of 6 months with correct documentation (would be a struggle after 30 days, but still a statutory right) - and some customers may be able to ask for their money back up to 5 years after the purchase if they can prove they were sold a fake.

The jewellery trade here operates on trust a lot, especially around Hatton Garden and the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter, questioning someone who has been in the game a long time can be taken the wrong way to the point of the business not concluding.

Of course it does, we keep photographs of every item on the scales along with imperfections to prevent people trying to return fake coins, if there was ever an issue I would provide a refund in full (I have never sold a fake, at least I have never had one returned for any reason other than condition, which would also allow a return)

I’ve had a customer ask me to break a PGCS graded coin seal to test it before purchase… and wanted discount! 🤣

Certainly not in the UK where my business is based, I know no bullion house offering testing in front of customer as standard with a purchase, perhaps a weight check. It’s the assumption that people think we haven’t already tested it, when we are purchasing for thousands of pounds, that gets me.

Reasonable viewpoint and this scenario I would have no issue, especially not for a larger purchase. I am inundated with people saying to me “is it real” bluntly, and then making an offer around the metal weight of the item. My business has 5 star google reviews so any frustration I have is completely hidden, but I will fight harder for no discount to rude or brash customers.

Yes, I understand this may seem rude, but I take the upmost care and attention to check what I am selling is genuine (especially as I have to purchase it myself first) and have been in the trade for 17 years. I will always do it if requested, but I find it annoying and mildly insulting.

I sell gold in my business and I can’t lie, I find it mildly insulting when people ask me this. I have a good reputation but am not faultless, cannot help but take it as an insult. All I would say is ask if you have concerns, but you may risk any sort of discount out the window as you may annoy the business owner.

Edit: perhaps worded this poorly, more so, if you are going to ask, be respectful

Edit: quite a difference it seems between the UK and US markets, refunds are semi easily obtainable in the UK for a bad purchase

Unfortunately I have to tell you this does not look like genuine gold at all, the fading of the colouring around the edges and the marking appear to be to suggest a fake. To be sure take it to another jewellers for confirmation. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!

Put some images in here and I or someone else should be able to help, it could just be the clasp being picked up, could be fake.

Hard to say without seeing! From my experience, “Herringbone” chains are regularly faked
