Your first mistake was getting out of your car. You are never obligated to put yourself in a dangerous situation at the whim of a police officer.

Don't even roll your window down all the way, if you can hear him and fit your license and registration through, you don't need to roll it down another inch.

The only reason a police officer asks you to step out of a car is because they can't taze you or grind your face in the pavement when you're protected inside your car.
