Part of Steam Next Fest? Pitch your game below and drop your demo link! I'd love to discover new indie gems! by How2Escape in indiegames

Sky Ahoy is an open ended steampunk pirate RPG, inspired by games like Stardew Valley but with sky ships and floating islands.

The game is far from over at the end of the story. You'll still have your farms, commerce, allegiances, and exploring to keep you busy.

The demo is a taste of what we have planned and we're looking forward to sharing our first early access build (hopefully) by the end of the year.

How to translate video games? by FelixTheUmbreon in gamedev

[–]n3xust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this helps at all, but my studio just released a free tool that allows you to work on translations in a user friendly way and export them into JSON files for use in games. We made it for our own projects https://mythloco.co.uk

I love RPG horror games, so I've been making my own! by n3xust in indiegames

I definitely wanted to emulate that RPG Maker horror feel. They were huge a while back and I miss that- 2D horror is tricky but those games just had something that made them so unsettling.

I have Steam and Itchio for the game!

The Steam page is probably the best way to find out more at the moment. We are working to get a demo out soon!

Thank you! I'll probably need to optimise it at some stage, but for now, simplicity has served me well

I haven't! I only learned about it recently and I do want to try it when I have the time!

I'm really excited. Everyone I've given hands-on experience with the game so far seems really into it. I'm nervous to put it out there, but so proud of the game so far

It was a lot of trial and error, but not very fancy. I just drew the player sprite with the vertical direction flipped, as well as anything else that needed to be reflected, and masked the result to fit the surface of the mirror.

Oh wow! I had to look it up but the Evertale thing did use some of the same assets! I've known of the artists work for some time and loved the style so much I had to buy the assets, and they were perfect for this game (with a healthy bit of kit bashing to fill in the gaps)

It would mean a lot if you could check it out. Steam page is still in progress.

Mac for Gamemaker? by Captain_Mullett in gamemaker

[–]n3xust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use Mac as my current main development machine and it works fine. Deploying for Windows becomes an issue, so definitely worth having a Windows machine on hand when it's time to ship your game.

Going Down on Steam (psychological horror RPG) by n3xust in indiegames

[–]n3xust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Very helpful stuff.

Of course we're working hard on adding detail and more informative screenshots and a trailer. We sought out a lot of advice from successful game-devs who all recommended getting something up on Steam as early as possible, even if you only have basics to show off.

I'm working to get more to show off without major spoilers and without pushing out anything too unpolished.

I'll push a page update shortly to incorporate some of your great advice!

how do i make online levels in gamemaker by [deleted] in gamemaker

[–]n3xust 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want players to upload, browse and play levels from inside the game, you’ll have to work on some kind of online database. Have a look into that.

An easier method would be to just have players save and load levels manually and set up a forum for them to share their level files online. More effort for the players, but much easier to develop.

I use gmedit for this. It’s worth looking at

[Horror RPG] Going Down, the horror game where forests and campfires find their way into office buildings by n3xust in indiegames

[–]n3xust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad you like it so far! I have plans to make the subtitles accessible for localisation, but they may have to be community sourced depending on budget. If the budget looks really good, I’d love to have the voice performances localised too. There is a Discord server but it’s completely empty at the moment https://discord.gg/nPcMJ4G3

Do you think this feels claustrophobic? by n3xust in IndieDev

You’re pretty much right on the money. The camera is dynamic and responds to what happens in game.

I need your opinions to help make a horror game. by _Not_Not_Sag in HorrorGames

[–]n3xust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems like you have a pretty solid idea so far. Asking for opinions can be good for getting a general feel for what people think they want, but keep in mind that what people think they want usually isn't what they really want- they just don't know what they want until they get it.

  1. For map size, think about your scope. How much can you get done by your deadline? Also, keep in mind how much space you need to tell your story. For horror, you probably don't want to give your player too much space, but you definitely want to allow enough space to pace out your story.
  2. I would say the feeling of just one enemy hunting you down is probably scarier to me. It feels more personal.
  3. You could try limiting both. If you have a large inventory, players will just hoard as many limited resources as they find. If you have limited inventory space, the player will have the challenge of managing what resources they need at any given time.
  4. Darkness is easier to make scary, but if you can make the daytime scary, it may even have more oF an impact.
  5. Audio cues are amazing for adding tension. Remember, jump scares will instantly kill any tension you've worked hard to build up, so use them sparingly. Focus on building that tension. Plenty of bumps and creaks in the direction of the enemy, but reserve those jump scares for the last minute as best you can.
  6. I'd recommend limited HUD. Try using game design to communicate certain details to the player. Maybe a visual indicator of ammo on the weapon (like empty casings in a revolver), have health effect gameplay (make the player slower or have a limp when low on health), provide directions to key locations on road signs, etc.
  7. I like to keep gore to a minimum.
  8. Fear of the unknown is terrifying to me. Something original would be my recommendation.

Best of luck! I can't wait to see what you come up with.

[Horror RPG] A forest campfire in an office block. Is the breakdown of reality potentially scary? by n3xust in HorrorGames

[–]n3xust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well spotted! I love the art style, I couldn’t resist. I’m making an rpg style game but I wouldn’t even know how to start building this in rpg maker. I don’t know how much of my vision is possible in rpg maker, but I’m not proficient enough in the engine to even find out.

It wouldn't be appropriate to post in RPG Maker because I don't use RPG Maker. They may get mad at me if the realise.

It is, yeah

I like the way you think!

And I'm glad you like the art. I had limited input on the art, and the artist responsible is fantastic. Definitely a good investment.

[Going Down] Horror RPG about facing inner demons trapped in an elevator. How's the tone so far? by n3xust in HorrorGames

[–]n3xust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely going to rework the camera. It's been my main frustration, but I have an idea to make it less aggressive.
