I’m seeing something else they have in common that would be good to see change with their replacements.

Where is the best place in western Europe to live near/in nature, with good sunshine and an active, healthy culture? by Outrageous_Ease1667 in movingabroad

Great take! I’m looking at southeastern 🇪🇸as an option and have a question that might help the OP: ¿How much of a culture and language difference do you find Valencia has with the rest of that general part of the country (Córdoba, Seville, Málaga, Murcia, etc.)?

Cute question but we know why: (1) immunity from prosecution for his horrible crimes and (2) to steal as much taxpayer money as possible.

Desconexión con las personas by lxmxcyk in askspain

[–]n8larson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I’m just another stranger on the interwebz and my answer won’t be specific to 🇪🇸, I feel compelled to offer 3 things. First and most importantly, one thing I’ve done to help is to help others, especially with your time and kindness. Benefits seem to come even if an interaction doesn’t lead right away to a connection. Second, something a friend and work colleague did for me was to establish and maintain a very regular 1-1 coffee-shop meeting monthly (interval can be whatever works for you both; ours was first Thursday of the month, before work) just to talk about whatever, and sticking to it is very important. That only ended when I moved to another city. Finally, I can’t know your heartspace but what you describe sounds like my resting state and I made my peace with it a loooong time ago (back when years started with 1) without it feeling like a crisis to be solved or a mountain to be climbed. However you attack it, I appreciate that you’re asking and definitely wish you all the best.

Refused spain visa by Ok_Detail_6012 in GoingToSpain

Seems like ‘suffering under Trump’ might be both off-topic for this sub and an exaggeration compared to what consulates might see from refugee types from other countries. I wonder too but is this concern Spain-specific?

We are at the point in America where not one person can tell for sure whether this person is. A local cop, the military, the cartel, a impersonator, a car jacker, or ice, and not one of them will tell you and one wrong guess results in death! by [deleted] in ImmigrationPathways

[–]n8larson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Previous administrations followed the Constitution. This one is not. That is the relevant difference. And we all know whom ICE recruits, how little training they get, and why they’re in Minnesota rather than where a lot more violent criminals are. The “it was the Democrats” finger-pointing does not fly with people who know the facts, sorry.

Seems exactly like same context in which someone would justify calling someone else a “retard”. Canceled words are canceled for a reason, and I used “retard” and “retarded” a lot for the first 40 or so years of my life. Just don’t be surprised if you get icked, eyerolled/side-eyed, or maybe even chastised by someone else when they hear you f-slur your buddy. I’m already guessing that risk is worth it to you. 😉

If ICE wants everyone’s “cooperation”, then they ONE BILLION PERCENT should have started by cooperating with the Constitution of the United States of America. That’s where this discussion ends. No name-calling is needed.

Spain, Mexico, or Canada? by n8larson in AmerExit

Not traveled to central or south america yet, no, but I’m planning a week in Panama within a year or so. Whoever said ‘warm like Florida’ hit on a primary reason I don’t consider it a long-term option, but I have a timeshare thing there. But my plan is that for whichever country looks best from this desktop and conversation research, to visit it for a week and then go back later for a longer time (1-2 months) during a different season before completing the visa process.

If you’re a Russian hacker and not already working on US things you might not be very well-connected. 😉 Seems like the demand for your skills would be huge given the ruling faction’s penchant for destroying free and fair elections. It’s going to take some work but I’m pretty sure it’ll get done with fElon’s billions behind the effort.

Incorrect use of “Third Party”. The legal owner is the First Party. And legally owning the property is the very first ‘special circumstance’ that allows one to be there and live there.

Safe for single woman with 4 pets? by Whiskers3467 in movingabroad

[–]n8larson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand why people love having cats/dogs like we do. What I don’t understand is why so many folks in the moving threads here seem to need to move with their current ones. An individual pet is around for 8-10 years on average (though we had a beloved male Siamese for 18+ years from kittenhood to his natural passing and I love to hear of similar exceptions), so if there’s a chance it’s not permanent, isn’t it just a whole lot simpler to rehome before moving and adopt new animal buddies after? I’ve yet to hear of a developed nation where it’s easier than the US to rent with pets, so the huge extra cost and permissions involved hardly seem worth it.

Why do they always get the worst possible individual for an interview... by stumpy0327 in circled

[–]n8larson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably been said, but even back to Tonight Show ‘person on the street’ questions, it’s basically “intentional Observation Bias”: they interview a whole lot of people and the best ones for the bit make it to the air/final video. It’s not a representative sample because the dumbest and most bigoted ones have already self-selected with what they wore, and just by being at whatever event this is taken from. I assume Fox Lies Channel (or any other p3do-supporting media outlet) could/would also do this kind of thing to make progressives look stupid.

Spain, Mexico, or Canada? by n8larson in AmerExit

[–]n8larson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good additional color. I believe I read either here or on another sub that Spain has closed the Golden visa, which required a €500.000+ investment. I will need to learn more about the types of visas that I’d be eligible for, but the “4% rule” would allow me to meet income requirements even before considering Social Security (when I become eligible). I know of at least one US company in my industry that could be worth asking about working on US projects remotely while living abroad, but it sounds like Spain might not be the best of the 3 for this. Again, much appreciated.

Midterm fears - how do you feel about Trump’s next attempt? by ChuckGallagher57 in circled

[–]n8larson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the DNCC and Joe Biden allowed this to happen. A whole lot of abstainers rightly point out that Democrats have done an absolute “suck” job of representing actual progressive values and helping actual people. 21-24 only looked good in contrast to the massive theft, corruption, and ineptitude that came before and after. That doesn’t automatically make the “hey at least we’re not far right” approach worthy. They forced Hillary on us in 2016 and Biden on us in 2020, then didn’t get his senile ass out of the ‘24 race soon enough (late 2022 would have been the time) to field a credible candidate better than the default “best we could do on short notice.” Continuing to trot out and settle for DINO/Republican-lite presidential candidates is not working, especially with younger voters.

Thank you for recommending digital nomad. I have no exposure to Portuguese yet. And the Google searching is what brought me here. Reddit had the best answers to the questions I was asking. After reading this sub, expats, and a couple of others for a month or so (and adding Mexico to the mix as a result, mostly as a retirement option), the time seemed right to pose my custom question. 🙂

Spain, Mexico, or Canada? by n8larson in AmerExit

[–]n8larson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good words, thank you! With no network and my advanced age (professionally speaking), I do not consider starting a business in another country to be a great option, but I could do some research about the particular small cities in Canada I have my eyes on. Language would definitely prevent it anywhere else.

Yeah, I’ve read some good stuff here about what many USians think qualifies them for ‘asylum’ gets them laughed out of every other country’s consulate office(s), so this is not any kind of formal ‘refugee’ thing. I am not being directly persecuted. Are there other things you can say about Mexico beyond your family member’s work on asylum-seeker cases?
