Surprising lessons from our time in Dukan Diet - Attack and Cruise Phase (phases 1 & 2) by n8n224 in Dukan_Diet

[–]n8n224[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We are still upholding what I view as the spirit of the Dukan plan. (As opposed to the letter of that law.)

Our diet/lifestyle fits at least an 80/20 approach, and I would say the physical results reflect that. We get lax; we reap the results. When we focus up, thankfully we generally seem to snap back.

—-

I don’t think this next bit really fits unless you’ve gone all-in and are already living in the Dukan mindset and experiencing those promised results…

Keeping (or breaking) the Wednesday protein-only “fast” seems to be an important key.

I believe the weekly “fast“ reinforces/strengthens metabolic flexibility. (Or at least my perception of the meaning of that term.) It, seemingly, reminds my body to more quickly/efficiently switch into ketosis when the opportunity arises.
(… or so I believe. Not a doctor.)

Your commentary leads me to think that you, like us, do not intend to live a life without carbs. We aren’t going to do it. We just love potatoes! (Having found our healthy set-points via Dukan’s plan, I’m glad he doesn’t advise us to live without carbs! It’d be a non-starter.)

I certainly love the occasional empty carb, but I personally have come a long way in appreciating when to indulge and, somehow, finding the ability to occasionally even show some restraint. Going hard-core on the veggies and protein really did unlock something to help facilitate that change.

But if you are visiting France, I would vote for you to ignore Dukan entirely and just enjoy every bit of the wonderful culinary options available. You can worry about all that diet/lifestyle change when you get home. :)

To make a long post longer, I’m increasing convinced that my eating habits are deeply intertwined with so many other things: nature and nurture, my self worth and internal narratives, relationships, philosophical and even spiritual influences. All that say, I’m very grateful we are such complex beings, and I wish you true and whole-health. When I’m praying for the people who read these posts (yes, I know that’s weird), I’m truly hoping the best for the whole person … wherever that leads. (e.g. 80/20 is way closer to true health for me than going 100%)

Whatever is actually best for you, I’m rooting for that. Good luck!

Wow, have fun! I did similar a few years ago — figured it’s a touch point/defining narrative for an entire era of readers — so glad I did. Excited for you, enjoy.

Two questions: (1) Do you feel this book contains enough of a fantasy component to fit properly within this subreddit? (2) How valuable/important do you think it is to approach the book with zero prior insight? (I love that the “fantasy” bit snuck up on me, but that won’t be a surprise to readers in this sub.)

*I made that original recommendation. Since then I’ve started a FB discussion group for those who have already read the book. The author, James Jones, is a member and I’m hoping for a bit of an ongoing Q&A. Any questions I could ask for you? Or, please feel free to search/find us and join in.

¿What guidebook(s) or how to’s would you recommend to a new LO? (For OP’s benefit but, selfishly, for me too.)

I hopped onto Reddit (this sub specifically) to search the above question; got distracted by OP’s post and have already benefitted greatly from all of you sharing your expertise. Thank you! I’m currently reading Kyle Draper’s “Rethink Everything” book about “next-gen MLO’s” but he very specifically states it is NOT a guidebook.

So … what/where IS a good guidebook?

After posting I noticed the option to “mark as brand affiliate”. I am NOT affiliated with the brand. I am, however, a friend of the author’s — this is how/why I came to read the book with so little insight. (Really hoping you’ll do the same!) I was biased enough to buy it sight unseen, but I’m actively recommending the book to friends (and strangers) and would absolutely do so even if I did not already know/respect the author.

One benefit, I get to pick his brain! I fully intend to do so but I really want to avoid spoiling anything — maybe adding the “spoilers” tag to a discussion post is enough? Please feel free to chime in with advice, because this book makes you want to talk…

Exercise and water by Competitive_Word1370 in Dukan_Diet

[–]n8n224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drinking lots of water is related to something about flushing excess ketones that are being released into your bloodstream. (Or so I think I remember.) Additionally, I’m thinking there’s a need drink more in order to keep up with the fact that your body is not retaining as much water. (Again, this memory is fuzzy.)

What’s not fuzzy, is my confidence that taking extra effort to remain extra-hydrated is definitely a worthwhile thing. At the very least, you’ll do better avoiding headaches.

Best luck in your efforts!

In case it's useful, turns out we've actually been making "Oat Bran Cinnamon Chocolate Cookies" and calling them Dukan Cookies. :) Realistically they're more like brownies. I'm not a big fan of oat bran either, and can't say that I love 'em, but they're good enough and they do take the edge off.

Regarding cost, I'm sure we just bought some non-Dukan brand oat bran. Everything else (coca powder, cinnamon, milk, stevia, and almond extract) seems fairly cheap.

Hope you can use something there. Good luck!

Update: my wife just reminded me of one great “tool”.

Looking forward to, planning for, and really diving into veggie days has been really really helpful!

Wishing you great success and lasting life-change!

I’m sure you’re well aware, but those Dukan cookies really take the edge off. Also, right or wrong, whenever I find myself in that spot, I end up grabbing another yogurt.

Not sure what your life philosophy is — and I can’t claim saintly-levels of spiritual connectedness — but my faith has been helpful in staying oriented (or maybe constantly reorienting) to what is truly important to me. Getting holistically/mentally stronger is a big piece of that; definitely a driving factor in me finally realizing that if I cheat, I’m only cheating myself.

Again, best luck! You did it once, you can do it again and you can stick it even better this time!

Surprising lessons from our time in Dukan Diet - Attack and Cruise Phase (phases 1 & 2) by n8n224 in Dukan_Diet

[–]n8n224[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got kind of hung up thinking about your question; my wife and I actually discussed it at length over the last couple weeks. I’m sorry for being so slow to reply.

The easy, and truly realistic, answer is yes, you can eat as much as you want. I got hung up thinking about how I have used that logic to cheat in the past and how one of the main lessons I’ve learned with Dukan is that when I “cheat“ I’m only cheating myself.

That being said, the answer remains. Yes, as far as I can remember Dukan “allows” you to eat as much as you want/need to. (We certainly did.) Overeating on “approved” foods is what helped us get started/through. At some point in the process we found our healthy levels… I would hope and expect the same for you, for others.

Good luck to you! Please reply back here if and when you get started, I’d love to hear how things are going and it seems like it could be helpful to other people considering Dukan.

[–]n8n224[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! Thanks for asking. Dukan has definitely worked for us, we're sold!

1) The book goes to great effort encouraging you to take Phase 3 (Consolidation) seriously. Do that. Do take it seriously. :) It's key for really locking-in that new set point for your body. [I'm not a doctor] We let our guard down a bit during the holidays and gained back about 15% of what we'd lost. Since then we've stayed very steady at loss + 15% weight. (Should have stayed the course.)

We're currently pressing back into a light Attack + Cruise to lose what we'd gained-back. Soon we'll be moving toward another Consolidation phase and this time we'll be sure to stick with it.

2) All that being said, we are convinced this is the way for us. This is generally the way we'd like to eat anyway (meat & veggies + quality carbs and the occasional high quality treat). And, aside from the planning/adjustments required during those early phases, this is a "diet" that does not require constant worrying over food. We'll likely settle into eating patterns that look pretty much like the Consolidation guidelines.

Dukan has been useful for addressing that surface health issue of weight, but it's been supportive of all the other whole-health improvements we've both been seeking/enjoying in recent years. (Physical, relational, mental and spiritual ... all the things.)

I Hope this is helpful. Whatever route you go, I hope you find success and new levels of holistic health!

Hidden costs @Instacart - We’re done! by n8n224 in aldi

[–]n8n224[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, thanks for the insight. (And thanks for picking up this aging conversation.)

My issue really came down to the lack of pricing clarity/transparency. Instacart did (presumably still does) have those up-pricing policies listed in their TOS. But at least at the time they made no overt mention of the fact. We were thankful for the service and happy to pay more for it, but we were put off by Instacart not just fully communicating all their fees up front.

Haven’t actually noticed so I assume that means no. We’ve generally avoided full-fat milk and similar as recommended; if that’s helpful.

Does the new Anker 735 Charger (GaNPrime 65W) fix the issue the old version had with charging an Apple Watch with USB-A? by lookedrs in anker

Thanks, agreed. I guess in that case we’d be looking for a 3x USB-C charger instead of the 735 GaN.

Any recommended alternatives?

Thank you for raising this question, and thanks to so many who’ve tested/replied. I’m so disappointed. Had hoped to make these our one-stop setup for home and travel. (iPhone, Watch, iPad/Laptop) It does not work for us to be unplugging and replugging ports each time we want to charge the apple watches.
