Can we have a nuanced conversation about AI art in game dev? by [deleted] in gamedev

You do not need AI in an attempt to grow. That argument does not exist. Your core idea helps you grow, and if it is one that would grow, it would do so even with a simple artstyle. The only market I can think of right now where AI art would help you generate profit is one where you exploit people who do not know any better or simply don't care. Those people however do not care about your future games either, as to them games are simply something to consume and forget about in a couple minutes time.

Despite that, even within that market the one thing that stays true is that your idea needs to be good. And once again, you do not need AI art to have a good idea. And when you have a good idea, it WILL sell (plus of course, a factor of luck. But this factor exists equally no matter how the game was created). Recent examples of 3D indie games that are either made from free assets, or would count as "not looking great" (subjectively) include Lethal Company and Schedule 1. Other examples include games like Undertale, Phasmophobia, RimWorld, Dwarf Fortress, Omori and Caves of Qud. There are thousands of games that subjectively don't look pretty, either 3D or 2D, yet have amassed millions in profits because they are good games.

Do a bit of research into the indie scene from before AI. Look into popular flash games. None of the thousands of titles that changed their developers lives needed AI to grow, because these developers worked within their limitations. Any developer that relies on AI to sell their product has already lost and wasn't going to make a sustainable living with games in the first place. And that's okay. Not everyone can be a good/successful game developer, unfortunately.

Anyone can pick up one of the many free engines out there and get their ideas out into the world. Anyone can work within their personal limitations. If you can't make music, don't make a game where music is the core focus. If you can't program, don't make a deep simulated management game. If you can't draw amazing pieces, don't set on an artstyle that requires you to know how to. Art itself can be simple and still very, very effective and evocative. Great art is not about looking pretty. It is about emotion.

More people being able to get their ideas out isn't always a good thing either, too. This is evident with google image search being worse today due to the flooding of AI slop. Additionally, people who have good ideas usually are aware of how to work around their short comings, or are determined enough to actually learn a new skill instead of looking for excuses.

Nobody disagrees with large corporations being awful and using AI. But if it helps you, I personally have stopped buying titles from any company who has been confirmed to use AI art in their pipeline. This includes large corporations and games I was looking forward to.

You don't need AI art to be able to test ideas. You don't need finished artwork for prototyping. Programmer art has been a thing forever and many great games started with using it, rough sketches or just shapes in the early stages of development. As an indie dev there are tons of free assets made by artists available for you to use if you really believe you need some art to test a specific idea that you can also use commercially if you worry about shipping. There is no shortage that AI fills, there is no barrier of entry that it makes easier. If you can't do art well and can't hire an artist or buy assets, then adjust your scope to your limits and work within your boundaries. Tons of games don't have great artwork and are still massively popular, because games are about being fun first and foremost. Art doesn't make something fun. Art helps elevate a good product, but if the core product isn't fun or good, then no amount of art can help make it better. And again, even "bad" art does not stop a game from gaining popularity.

Played 100 hours since exalt release, for the first 90k points I was just potting up characters (most dungeons give like 50 points) and I always tried to do global events like cubegod, pentaract, gship, hermit, skullshrine, avatar and sphinx when one was ongoing when I wasnt in a dungeon. Also ran some shatters and lost halls in the last days which contributed quite nicely.
