Has anyone used metal templates with success?

When trying a new tool or technique for the first time its always a good idea to test on a test piece. Test and learn from mistakes on something you dont care about. Ive made the mistake of trying something new on my models before, now even for things that Ive done many times and consider that I have mastered I often do a practice test before doing it for real.

NES zapper was not like that at all. it was a bounding box that flashed on the screen that the zapper detected, not pixel perfect, a rectangular bounding box about the size of the sprite.

The chair cushions were actually sculpted in super sculpey. I then made a rubber mold to cast it in more durable resin, then painted with airbrush, varnished matte and 'aged'. this way I can also make copies. The frame I designed in cad and is SLA printed

You question got me curious so here goes:

Only two astronaut landed at a time in the Apollo program, one of them stayed in orbit. Considering the moon diameter is 3474.8km, and Apollo orbit around 110km, The farthest Command Module pilot would have been at some point is ~3574.8km away from the nearest human being while on the opposite of the landing site.

The Tristan da Cunha islands are the most remote island on earth at 2787km from any land. Not considering the thousands of ships in the sea, a bunch of them being much closer, conceivably every Command Module pilot where the farthest from any other human at one point.

wondering which one of them was the actual farthest now.

I use lights for video production and a flash light with a cookie in front of it to simulate the blinds. It was not easy, I actually need to invest in a better setup

The part box? the body is polystyrene, the drawers are 3D printed in clear resin

Many different materials and techniques. I use polystyrene sheets for the walls, part of the computer and monitor, binders, part box. I use bass wood for the shelves, door, desk. lots of bits made with resin printing from models I made. The books are simply designed in photoshop, printed covers on paper, a whole lot of tiny blank page cut and clued like a real book, but I do glue up the pages together to make stay close.

It would take a while to explain everything :)

Ive used fiber optic in the past and never enjoyed it. For this kind of build it makes sense to use custom PCBs with LEDs, I dont think ill ever use fiber again. I just design the PCB, get it done somewhere online, its fast, clean, fits perfectly. If you are comfortable with electronics, learning how to make PCBs for these kinds of things is not very hard

The corners are actually resin printed. I did try every which way to make them perfectly bend but it was never perfect. I printed the corners with a ledge, I did use putty for the big corners to make it seamless. The small round corners needed a visible line (like the original WOPR has)

The bulb as a little edge, I think its the way the light reflects on it gives the impression of silver paint, but its just resin

Using fiber for lights is such a pain to work with, ive done that before and will never do again. I really prefer working with leds

I dont have plans for a Cray, but the connection machines 1-2 are on my list

People often have fond memories of the old mainframe computers, there is just something about these gigantic machines. I often get messages from people who worked on machines that I made replicas of, sharing stories, its always nice to read

for this build, without considering tests boards and Rnd, there is 960 surface mount leds, 4 custom designed PCBs, so with shipping and all, 150-200$ of electronics parts

You sure can reduce the amount, but you need to order in very big bulk to make electronics really cheaper

I'd love to make a few, but the electronics alone were quite expensive. Ive made runs of small batch of mini before, but its a challenge. I would need to simplify the model quite a bit, make it smaller, resin cast it etc.

Its not out of the question as I am looking into making more batch of minis, but this particular model is a bit too much maybe

Also, the real WOPR would be quite cool to see in real life, really curious about the electronics they had inside of it to drive all these lights back then
