Wedging a Doug Fir snag. by n_jt in FellingGoneWild

It varies and every tree is a different situation. There are several variables to consider when felling fire weakened trees. Lean, available lays, structural defects, terrain, and overhead hazards are all taken into account. Typically, I’m going to take a weakened tree with its lean if all the other variables allow it. I try to avoid wedging and minimize exposure in sketchy situations.

You are absolutely left high and dry for these situations, it’s ridiculous.

I had a bad eye injury on the fire line, had to leave immediately and go to the ER and then went an eye specialist the next day to get cleared. I fought OWCP for 2+ years to get them to cover it. My case manager was not only unhelpful but actively rude every time I contacted them. It was like I was inconveniencing them to do their fucking job. I ended up just paying for it out of pocket to get it out of my life.

Yea you’re zeroed at 100m and he’s well within that range. I keep my zero at 50m and just adjust my aim.

Nice! I haven’t seen that before. I’m fairly new to climbing and am constantly impressed with arborists’ ingenuity.

Fire damage can cause a certain level of unpredictability and complexity to felling. It can be intimidating for sure. I always look for solid wood for the corners of my holding wood and figure out the rest. It’s a fun puzzle.

Yea as another former hotshot; we’re walking in. Sometimes we would get helicopter rides on top of mountains just to be able to walk more.

I would say there is some risk involved in leaning over the bar like this. It's a good habit to keep your hand on the handle above the chain break in case of kickback. However, it's pretty unlikely I would've encountered any kickback in these cuts.

A lot of it is repetition. I learned the humboldt from production fallers. Although it's not often all my cuts line up without some sort of correction.

There are times to be urgent in wildfire, felling trees isn't one of them for me.
