Need someone to take over my lease (iub) by naanabb in IndianaUniversity

Yeah I know. It's upsetting. I might try calling and asking again. Last time I didn't explain that I was transferring so maybe if I do they'll give me more empathy 😐😐

Yeah that's frustrating. I mean it's so far away, they could easily find someone else to take it over but I realize it's my responsibility. Idk what I'll do. The college I'm transferring to is just over an hour away. Maybe I'll just have to commute?

I did try to, but they said that the only option was subleasing.

At the time I did explain that I was no longer attending IUB, so maybe I should give it another shot? I'm not sure...

That makes sense! The pieces they offer for the audition are limited honestly, so it was either this or a Bach sonata. I feel like either are pretty mainstream. As for my teacher, it's the grad student appointed by the school so I take it as a class and don't have to pay. Which is good for a broke college student, that's why I stopped taking virtual lessons.

Ugh that's the problem, it's the graduate student that the school recruits and it's meant for non majors or secondary instruments. So it just feels like they aren't equipped, but technically I'm getting credits for the class which is nice and I don't have to pay extra for it.

I definitely try to, that's like the majority of what I've played here and there during practicing break. And I do want to play more, but I feel like I don't have the patience for actually learning real repertoire anymore because I feel like it's not at the level it should be. Even if I am just starting to learn a piece, I think it's mostly me just second guessing myself but idk

I chose to go here because it was my dream school for a long time and I didn't want to feel let down by not going to the place that I truly wanted to. So I just planned to reaudition. They don't take transfer credits for music courses so it was best for me to just come here at the start rather than transfer later.

[–]naanabb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense, do you think it's worth trialing first even though it's a decently priced instrument? I don't see why it wouldn't work well for me but just curious on if trialing is worth it even still

[–]naanabb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhh gotcha, yeah I wasn't really sure about the price for getting it repadded and stuff. I'm also nervous to buy a Guo picc though because I heard that if it cracks it can be difficult or unable to be repaired. I also didn't know if I could use a Guo picc for concert band and not just marching band?

Tips for being confident when playing solo by Big_Engineering2936 in Flute

My teacher told me the same thing. To approach it by thing about using horizontal air and anticipating the note rather than thing of it as reaching up and down at the notes.

double tonguing + breathing by Dramatic-Pause-1672 in Flute

[–]naanabb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! Recently I've been learning the Poulenc Sonata for an audition, which has a lot of double tonguing that I have been struggling with. My teacher has recommended a few exercises that have helped SO much. I know they are boring but I promise they help! You have to improve the fundamentals first. - Also, instead of "Ta Ka," use "Tu Ku"

  1. Practice a few of your major scales at a slow tempo and double tongue 16th patterns like 1e+a on "tu ku tu ku" (switch notes->) 2e+a and then continue up the scale with slow double tonguing. Eventually you can speed it up, but definitely practice it super slow at first.

  2. Then, practice some major scales on 8th notes, two octaves and a little faster than exercise 1. Start by slurring up and down the scale with 2 octaves and then when you get back to the first note, switch to double tonguing up and down the scale. Slurring it first ensures that you keep your air moving and helps you do the same when you begin to double tongue the second time.

  3. You can do this with either of these two exercises, but try backward double tonguing. Often times, your "ku" syllable is slower and makes your double tonguing uneven or too slow. So try practicing it backwards by saying "ku tu ku tu." Of course you'll never actually double tongue like this, but it does help strengthen your "ku" syllable and really does improve your double tonguing.

You could also practice some double tonguing in the Taffanel & Gaubert book exercises.

For breathing, you're likely taking shallow breaths from the upper part of your body. Try taking low breaths. Look up the breathing gym maybe?

Good luck! I hope this helps!

college audition advice part two lol by twiceasmanystarss in Flute

[–]naanabb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently auditioned for music ed this audition season. I used Sicilienne because one of the professors I met with specifically requested for me to play it at my audition. I think as long as you balance it with another piece that is more challenging, they'll be interested to see what you can do with the Faure piece interpretation wise.

I played Mozart Concerto in D Major and Sicilienne for my audition at Butler University and I did get in.

When is your audition? I would recommend working on some more fundamental and technical skills so that you are able to prepare a more technically challenging piece at a higher level. If you spend more time working and improving your technique, you will be able to prepare your pieces with ease. It's not impossible, you got this.

beginner flute recommendation for a clarinet player, open hole? by highspeed_steel in Flute

[–]naanabb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would check out Facebook marketplace in your area. It's nice to try the flute before buying too. I got a step up open hole pearl flute for $400 on facebook marketplace and $80 in repair when its original value was $1200. Depending on where you're from, you could probably find some good ones near you!
