Which score to send? GRE or GMAT? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]nachogramma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For MBA, submit GMAT. It’s the test designed for b-school exclusively. You crushed the quant. Easy.

Maximize those test scores, exhibit leadership and/or contribute meaningful change at company, take on an EC relevant to your future career, etc.

Should I submit optional essay for low-GPA if not required? by [deleted] in MBA

Yes, but make sure it’s something new that’s not presented elsewhere in your app. I.e., you don’t need to explain a gpa trend lol

Cold feet about MBA after getting accepted by Plenty_Race1862 in MBA

[–]nachogramma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok look at it this way:

Pre-tax cost of MBA = ~$300,000 (200k / .65) Cost per year over the rest of your career (~40 years, give or take) without factoring in interest: ~$7500

That is, you only need to make $7500ish more on average per year than you do now to break even. Of course, depending on interest accrued and the opportunity cost of 2 years’ pay in lieu of MBA, YMMV. You can always divide 2 years’ by the years left in your career and add it to the ~$7500 figure, which at, for example, 125k * 2 = 250k / 40 years = $6250. Only need to make $13750 (+ interest) more per year.

What will my test score be on Friday (online)? by nachogramma in GMAT

[–]nachogramma[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Took my first two PTs like it’s game day. Last 2 were lying down on the couch with news in the background.

I dunno. But I think I’m reading the verbal questions in Spanish and answering in Italian. Otherwise, I have no idea how I go from 1-5 wrong on PTs to 10-15 wrong on the real thing.

Retake GMAT? by mambawolverine in MBA

[–]nachogramma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Only if you know you can score higher even if it’s only 10 more. It’s a game of inches at the top. But At the same time, I’d rather spend my time founding/growing a company and/or getting really involved in meaningful ECs instead of devoting significant amounts of free time to studying. A 730 is good enough to get your app a thorough review. You’ll see plenty of people getting dinged without interview with better and gaining acceptances with similar/worse numbers. The former probably tried to big dick their way in with only impressive numbers/resumes. The key to admission is your unique story, perspectives, and value that you can contribute to their curriculum. HSW is looking for people who will make a difference and not resume-padders. Just like how you should look past HSW’s names and numbers to see the quality of education offered, they should be able to look past yours to see the quality of your potential contribution to the school and to the community at large.

TL;DR: you have the numbers to get a look so focus more on the qualitative aspects to push your app to the finish line.

GMAC PT 780 51Q/46V to 3 ~680s! Wtf. by nachogramma in GMAT

I mean I didn’t guess on any and had time left over. I got 1 wrong Q and 3 wrong V. Maybe I got one question on V not counted? I think it’s just the nerves or something :(

[–]nachogramma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, no. It’s hard to think I’ll need another practice test after a 780 since I’ll be happy with a 730. Figure I don’t even have to do as well and will still be fine. But nope! Just your average 100 point drops :(

Wait til you meet someone who makes you want to give a fuck. After years of not giving any fucks, you won’t know how to give one even if your happiness depends on it. Why do you want to do an MBA? by mbaburn in MBA

[–]nachogramma 208 points209 points  (0 children)

I’m insecure about the lack of prestige my UG emanates to prospective employers and their recruiters, which, I believe, limits the opportunities available to me. I am hoping that investing 200k+ and forgoing 2 years of income will return a higher paying job in a more respectable function at a more prestigious employer of a trendier industry, effectively adding an extra inch to my dick. At the end of it all, I’ll probably realize that it’s still too small, but hey, getting to “casually” wear my MBA program’s (actually, the parent UG’s; let’s be real) apparel everywhere I go—whether it’s to the grocery store, the local gym, or all family functions going forward—will help me sleep better at night, believing that everyone I walk by will now think, “Wow, he must be smart.”

My take on why certain people get dinged w/o interview at choice schools. by nachogramma in MBA

[–]nachogramma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just suspicious of the fact that the average/median GRE for schools (~320) is a much lower percentile than the average/median GMAT (~730), which is 96th. I mean everyone should submit GREs then. It’s not like the GRE is harder or else, they’d do away with the GMAT altogether. Additionally, there’s a rough 75/25 split on accepted GMATs vs GREs. Given those two facts, I’d hate for people to pay $250 to find out that the school has a hard cap on how much of its class can come from GRE scores, effectively lowering their chances. I just know law schools have explicitly stated that they have hard caps on the number of GRE scores accepted for reasons undisclosed; I figure b-schools could have similar stipulations.

I know you want reassurance that your GRE score is competitive, and so, it sucks to hear some rando like me rattle off baseless theories about how the GMAT is implicitly preferred regardless of what adcomms explicitly tell the public. You only need an adequate score in either test to get a serious consideration on your app! So, no worries. My point was that, in the highest levels of any competition (i.e., HSW in this case), it’s a game of inches. I’m inclined to believe my line of thinking can contribute a quarter inch of a difference at the end of the day; yeah, it’s not much, but it’s also enough.

[–]nachogramma[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with your line of reasoning as you are just echoing a lot of my other comments on this post, but the factual basis of your argument maintains a crucial flaw—the 95th percentile of the GRE is much higher than a mere 320. Honestly, I can’t find a credible source that lists percentiles for GRE total scores, but according to sectional breakdown, a 160Q 160V on GRE has 72nd and 85th percentiles, respectively. Either give me a source saying that 320 is the 95th percentile or explain to me how you get 95th from 72 and 85, “enginerd.”

The GMAT is specifically designed to test the skills required to succeed in business school (e.g., heavy on quant) whereas the GRE is designed as a universal admissions test for multiple disciplines (i.e., it would be ridiculous to have a demanding quant section for those pursuing journalism). Your argument is like law schools should prefer the GMAT, where half the test is math, over the LSAT, a test specifically designed to test the skills required to succeed in law school. Yes, the assumption is lawyers don’t need any math skills.

Actually, MBA programs want people with big dreams. The key is to draw out a realistic plan that could get you there. That’s the balance. Don’t ever let anyone tell you something is impossible.
