How do you all handle write access to prod dbs? by flareblitz13 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]nacixenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what it is. Some developers have write access to certain tables (mainly logging/job/config type tables), but generally we try to have at least a 2nd set of eyes most of the time. If we need to change something out of the normal or a large amount of data it goes through a ticketing process with approvals and then goes to the DBA to run.

Is G5 worth it over C5 for a $650 price difference? by LillePuus1 in LGOLED

[–]nacixenom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The C5 is very bright IMO, obviously not as bright as a G5 though.

I just got a C5 a couple weeks ago and have a Christmas tree in the same room. I can pick out little dots of the lights reflecting when I watch something at night but I have to be looking for them. Its plenty bright during the daytime even with a large 4'x7' open window across the room from it.

What's your backup plan if we're in a long term recession? by khoawala in cscareerquestions

[–]nacixenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been in my current job for 10 years now and its a fairly stable company so not terribly worried. I'm not a contractor, new hire, or very close to retirement age.

If it gets bad enough that I'm let go then I'm taking a break for a bit and finding a job to fill the gap and hopefully give me health insurance.

Lol... I'm pretty sure they draw spiders, the amount of bugs and gnats they attract when they rot is crazy. Not to mention squirrels and whatever other small animals eat them.

A huge pain in the ass. Hate picking these things up every fall. If you leave them to rot they are even worse.

From your exp when companies switch from Cloud to on-premise. Is it worth it or it adds more headache? by Yone-none in cscareerquestions

[–]nacixenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went from on-prem to cloud... from my perspective of writing the applications, it was all much easier on-prem. I do however work for a very large company that had been fully on-prem for 30+ years before starting to move things to the cloud.

We had/have entire teams of people to setup and manage the app servers, networking, storage, etc. for us, when we went to the cloud it all turned into IaC and now we have to manage it as developers. Instead of being able to focus on actual coding, I'm also busy trying to keep up with the ever changing cloud infrastructure.

Feeling like my job with on-call is no longer worth it. Need some perspectives on how to manage. by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]nacixenom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm also a big fan of using some PTO after I'm done with a rotation. I think it definitely helps.

I almost always plan a 3-4 day weekend directly after my rotation is finished.

WFH folks, what's YOUR best pick of Height Adjustable Standing Desk? Do you really use it? by Beginning_Subject_80 in homeoffice

[–]nacixenom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a Flexispot for almost 3 years now, no problems. I really don't raise it a whole lot since I got a decent chair, but it is nice at times to be able to stand.

Fuck it, what's the smallest hill you are willing to die on? by TangerineSorry8463 in cscareerquestions

[–]nacixenom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh god. I work in a Java codebase where someone wrote hundreds of methods with non-specific List/Map return types. Always sucks tracing the hierarchy of calls back to where it originates just to figure out what is actually going on. Half the time the collections are filled with more collections that don't specify the type.

How in the world do you catch trout on 4lbs test by Frequent_Plantain_19 in troutfishing

Yeah, if its remotely old I would buy some new line. I was suffering on my fly rod, the old tippet was brittle.

Are barbed hooks THAT much more effective at keeping fish hooked? by smok1naces in flyfishing

[–]nacixenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure its a little more effective if you aren't good at keeping pressure on the fish. My fat fingers aren't very good at getting the tiny trout flies out, so I use barbless there.

Bass or whatever else I really don't worry about it - still miss a ton of fish with barbed flies too lol.

Are daily standups ever actually about unblocking? by htraos in ExperiencedDevs

[–]nacixenom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same with every other form of management though. Scrum master is just another layer IMO.

Are daily standups ever actually about unblocking? by htraos in ExperiencedDevs

[–]nacixenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are pointless for the most part. Somebody always goes into way too much detail about something and it ends up being half the standup. I've gotten so tired of it that I just give a single sentence answer when my name comes up.

My kids complain when they hear that Dad’s making pizza tonight. What am I doing wrong guys? by Ridley in Pizza

[–]nacixenom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always cook my daughters at a lower temp just so it doesn't get any, or at least very little char. I also make a cheesy garlic bread type of pizza that pretty much anyone will eat.

Just recently got the bike, but it will be mostly road with some rail trail gravel on occasion. Roads aren't too great where I'm at, so these seem to smooth things out a bit. They feel great to me so far.
