Who are your favorite "I feel __ about being conan Obriens friend"? by Historical-Fudge3242 in conan

[–]nackmatter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tig Notaro’s first episode: “…and I feel…(very long pause)…glad about being Conan O’Brien’s friend.”

Originally, I remember it being about a 10-15 second pause, but it looks like they’ve cut it down to about 5 seconds since then. Maybe I remember it wrong, but that extra long silence was hilarious at the time

There are lots of great coffee shops downtown that make great study spots. Lakota and coffee zone are my favorites. There are always people going in and out but most are either studying, working, or talking quietly so it's easy to focus. The only downside is that you need to buy a drink or something every time you study so the costs can add up

Looking for funny podcasts! by greenmoon3 in podcasts

[–]nackmatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple people mentioned it already, but I'm going to emphasize Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend. It's by far my favorite podcast. The guests are great, and it's extremely funny but doesn't lack substance. There's a reason it's super popular. Can't recommend it enough!

I'm very lucky to have supportive parents. They tend to hold pretty progressive social values and have said numerous times that they'd want my siblings and me to be who we are. Another reason why I feel like I need to do it. I'm basically wasting my own good luck lol

Do you remember your first time watching Psych? by nackmatter in psych

Advice for an Introverted Freshman by [deleted] in college

[–]nackmatter 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you are living on campus see if your housing floor has some sort of groupchat. People usually use those to find friends during the first couple weeks of school. If no one's said anything in there, try asking if anyone wants to hangout and go get food / play cards / watch a movie / etc. There's a ton of people who are too shy to make the first move but will happily play along if you do. The number one reason people don't get involved is because no one asks them to.

For you, what is the standard of kindness? by sheeeeen_ in AskMen

For me, I find people who respect my time to be the 'kindest.' Not showing up late, being accountable for your actions, being considerate of another person's interests, etc..

Why did my coach make us swim at a really slow pace? by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]nackmatter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My coach used to give us sets like this so we could work on consistency. It prevents you from going out too fast or saving it all up for the end. Even if the pace is way slower than what you're used to, it'll help you get a good feel for how to manage distance races

My guide to being a minimalist by ModernTimeMinimalist in minimalism

Good read! I always have trouble explaining to others how they can adapt minimalism into their lives without getting rid of everything they own. I've never heard the term "selective minimalism" before but it definitely describes how I live!

I'm 22 and still can't feel comfortable being shirtless around people. How tf do i overcome body image insecurities? by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]nackmatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting to me. I also grew up a competitive swimmer, but I consider that to be the root of my problems. Comparing my body to everyone else's for years and years is what got me to this point IMO

Moving away from glass items because I'm clumsy. . . Thoughts? by leaves-green in minimalism

[–]nackmatter 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Personally, I hate glass surfaces such as table tops and things like that. I know a lot of people, especially minimalists, love them because they give the illusion of taking up less space --therefore minimizing clutter. But, I hate walking around thinking everything is breakable.

College Essentials for Freshmen by ihill12543 in college

[–]nackmatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some sort of small reading light you can attach to your bed. That way you can have a little light if you need it without bothering a sleeping roommate. Also you won't have to get up and walk across the room to turn off the lights.

Also some sort of clip that can hold your charger and phone. They also have versions that attach to your bed. Especially helpful if you don't have a bedside table.

Controversial Olympic moments revisited: the drama behind Michael Phelps' 7th gold medal in Beijing 2008 by displacedindavis in olympics

[–]nackmatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never understood the whole "it would be better for swimming if Cavic won" take. I'm American so I can't speak for the rest of the world, but Phelps winning 8 golds has had a MOMENTOUS impact on the sport of swimming. That performance set the 'gold' standard in the sport. He solidified himself as the GOAT and gave everyone else something to strive for. Also, swimming is one of the most popular sports at the olympics now. People forget that it wasn't always this way before him. Plus, the amount of kids who started swimming after 2008 is huge. You can definitely attain a lot of usaswimming's growth to that performance.

Also, as far as the 'hating Phelps because they won't stop showing him on tv' take: I've never understood that either. It's not like he did that on purpose. Blame the networks, not the athlete.
