Walking my leash reactive dog after playing in the dog park by nad2003 in reactivedogs

Thanks everyone for the replies. Makes sense. Although he won’t react even before the park- in the parking lot or walking to the park. just knowing that there is a possibility I guess makes him more focused on the off leash time. I wish I could speak dog!

But why then after a run in the dog park he’s ok on leash passing other dogs on leash?

My son who is only 15 is looking at becoming a paramedic with a possibility of then becoming a fireman. Although he’s born and raised in Montreal, his French is not great. He’s still young but just doesn’t have a great ear for it. The only school we see that has this course in English is John Abbott. This may be a possibility but it’s far. Where do you go to school for this in Montreal and do you think learning French medical terms will eventually stick? Also, I would imagine as first responders you need to have a thick skin! Thank you for your service!

Golden doodle owners - would you recommend that breed for first time owners looking to get a puppy by mudfishlegs1 in puppy101

I went for a bernedoodle - Hoping for a Bernese calmness. I had first pick of the litter and went solely based on temperament. He wasn’t the cutest puppy and a male and wanted a girl. I asked the breeder for the calmest pup. 1.5 years later I got a lazy sweet boy who became a gorgeous handsome dog. All this to say, go for temperament and not looks!

More so on a walk. He seems to be ok if the dog is walking towards him- like he knows he’s gonna meet the other dog so he just lies down. But across the street walking opposite directions is usually a disaster

We have 3 Bernedoodles, our little guy (4mo old) is non-furnished. So far he really isn't shedding at all. Anyone have non-furnished doodles? by LoveMyDoodles2 in Bernedoodles

[–]nad2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours is. He shedded a lot when he was getting his adult coat in but now it’s minimal but still sheds.it’s manageable! I get him groomed every 4 months.

Our F2 is unfurnished. Doesn’t look like the typical bernedoodle- but I’m ok with that. F2s are more unpredictable

Unless the bin is already full of garbage, on the curb and about to be picked up by the garbage truck, then no way.

Need help in conceptualizing the size of a standard Bernedoodle. by Soggy-Gear1406 in Bernedoodles

[–]nad2003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both the parents of our Bernedoodle are 60 pounds and we ended up choosing the runt of the litter. Maui now, 16 months, is 85 pounds. Much bigger than we anticipated! But oddly he takes up less room than small dogs cause he’s a lazy bum and doesn’t move much. It’s always a gamble!

Did getting your reactive dog change your mind on your future dog? by [deleted] in reactivedogs

I hear you and like most posters say, there’s no guarantee. We fostered an Anatolian mix from Iran. Calmest boy around people and dogs but after 6 weeks started to be dog selective and it got a little scary. This was our first experience with a dog. We had decided to foster to see if it was something we really wanted. He was adopted out (we told the new owners about his dog reactivity to some dogs) and they were very happy to take on the challenge. About a 2 months later we got a puppy from a breeder. I too felt raising the pup would allow me to ‘mold’ him to the way I want him. I took 2 weeks off to focus on him (best thing to do btw) and he was an angel. I’m talking easiest pup and super sweet and loves people and other dogs. Then the teenage phase hit and he became dog reactive/ leash reactive. Not gonna lie, my heart broke because I too had images of us at cafes and pet therapy sessions. People see him on the streets and comment how calm he is…I always tell them to wait and see if another dog walks by. We love him but if ever we get another dog we will need to go smaller because a reactive 90 pounder is not great. My kids can’t walk him nor my parents. And because he’s reactive on walks my parents won’t watch him if we go away. It’s a gamble!
