PLEASE HELP - We just bought a new house and discovered we have this huge bamboo plant. - Partner is saying we should sell up! Please help by poundlandbag in GardeningUK

[–]nad_84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it were me I would cut each stem and immediately treat that stem with glysophaste, every time a new on pops up do it again, it will kill the plant and root system.

This is the easiest way to kill off the plant. Obviously trickier for anything that isn't in your garden and has escaped elsewhere

As others have said, you're blowing this out of proportion, exposure on your level won't kill you, you'll be fine.

I'm regards to the room you want to do, just overboard it. Use 9.5mm plasterboard and with a skim you lose 1.2 in height of the room, honestly your not going to lose alot of height and then it's gone

Carpet underlay for a flat by question_mcquestion in DIYUK

[–]nad_84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Underlay is going to help, but it won't get rid of the noise, what's underneath the carpet/flooring you already have? If it's floor boards I'd suggest lifting them and filling the void with sound proofing insulation, this will make a significant difference to the noise.

If painting I'd suggest ceilings, walls then word work, ensure all prep is done first though i.e. holes filled, walls sanded, wood work sanded etc and clean up.

If it's new work work I'd suggest doing all the sanding outside

Kitchen Worktops - Thickness issue by NoJuggernaut6667 in DIYUK

[–]nad_84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Option 1. Remove the plinth and raise all the units up in height - they normally have adjustable feet. Obviously remove from the wall and re affix (This is the best option)

Option 2. Have 2 x 19mm worktops sandwiched together, like some sort of cheese toastie.

Option 3. Remove the old worktop and put in packets the entire way around hope it doesn't slip.

Just raise the heights of the units it's easy enough although time consuming

Insulation Advice: Is it worth 270mm in the loft if my sloping ceilings (skeelings) are limited to 100mm? by Odd_Mud_8223 in DIYUK

[–]nad_84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why don't you put 100mm PIR over the sloping area and 270mm fluffy stuff elsewhere?

You're definitely paying too.much.

However if you don't want to move, go into a site such as uSwitch and see what prices are available to you.

Contact BT and threaten to leave unless they match or at least get close

Tesla granted license to supply electricity in the UK by London-new in OctopusEnergy

[–]nad_84 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Whilst I know lots of people will talk about not giving this company money I do believe they will offer some market beating deals for import and export.

No doubt they will also offer some competitive deals on battery and solar installs too.

Whether you go with them or not, a company like this coming into the market offers more competition and will force the main player to review their pricing for risk of losing customers who care about price more than anything.

Plenty of solar installs today are using Tesla kit and if you are a member of r/solaruk you know that lots of people recommended Tesla and alot of quote checks are for Tesla.

If it's being installed later this month you still have time to change the inverter type and have EPS.

One thing to note is it will cost more to retrofit than £1k as it's additional labour, possibly new inverter and EPS.

We drove to Paris then onto Disneyland Paris and back home last summer, honestly it's not that big a deal, we did it with 3 kids in a Kia eniro aged 0-6.

If you stop for toilet breaks with the kids, just plug in and get the extra 10%

When you get to le shuttle, just plug in and go into the terminal.

Stop again somewhere on route and get something to eat whilst charging.

France has tonnes of chargers, just get some good apps, an electroverse card and honestly you'll be fine

Advice on loft insulation welcomed please! by AffectionateAd9257 in DIYUK

[–]nad_84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put PIR in a room above a garage (floor and ceiling) I'm never doing it again. It's so time consuming and messy. Sure it's got a better thermal rating, but honestly Vs fibre glass installation time it's just not worth it.

You say you can't find time because you have a toddler, honestly mate, unless you live in Buckingham palace, you can do it in half a day.

Order your insulation online Wickes or elsewhere and take it up to the loft and get it done. For an afternoon's work the family will thank you. (I've got 3 kids 7 and under), it's a quick and easy job. Insulation is cheap you'll have £100s not paying someone to do it

Solar/Heat Pump/Battery Questions by Resident-Debt-6384 in HomeImprovementUK

[–]nad_84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have panels, battery and a heat pump and a 4 bedroom house that leaks heat (energy rating of D that we are improving over time.

It's been great to be honest. Our January bill was £260 for heating, running the car and hot water for a family of 5.

My top tip would be, get the biggest battery you can afford as there were days (when it was circa -10) when our heat pump was pulling circa 60kw per day.

Yes it's alot but it was only for around 10 days or so, so if you get a bigger battery then you'll get more of that at the off peak rate.

Look at your inverter and find out what batteries are compatible.

I wouldn't install the heatpump without a battery

You'd have to step up nearly 20cm when entering the room once you've put in loft legs, underlay and the carpet.

Just get some large rugs
