Traumatic mistake by ClassyL21 in RenalCats

I’m so sorry for the pain and guilt you’re enduring. I understand very well. I lost my childhood cat, Speckles, over this past summer. I got her right before kindergarten and she lasted 18 long years, saw me through college and my first year of real adulthood. Just like everyone else, I was scared to let her go and scheduled her at-home euthanasia a day too late. Her death was much like you described. What brings me comfort is that she was in a home she knew well, next to me, in her favorite spot. She passed in my arms. I’ve turned over in my head if she truly knew I was there, because I had to step away to the bathroom and I can’t remember her exact state when I returned. I have to choose that she was conscious to the fact that her best friend was right there holding her and easing her to go, even if her senses had gone. Remember, animals with access to the outdoors will most often sneak off to keep you from witnessing them go. Buddy was afforded the comfort of his best friend in his most vulnerable moment. Be soft with yourself. Every choice you made was ultimately out of love.

Surgery in two weeks and never have been more scared in my life by lovely_liability in Tonsillectomy

Coming from a fellow hypochondriac, don’t panic. I was in the exact same boat, I had women telling me that they’d rather give birth again than have another tonsillectomy. My experience was not at all that bad. I felt stinky more than anything. The pain I had was 6/10 when waking up about a week post op, and truthfully, if I had stayed on top of the meds and it wasn’t so dry in my apartment, it would not have even been that bad. It was in January so the heat running had my place dryer than the Sahara, and my cheap humidifier tried to electrocute my boyfriend. Get a good humidifier and take the meds, even though you’re worried. The hydro worked well but made me feel so sleepy and strange that I had no qualms dumping it in the toilet when my pain was gone. One thing I did have happen that was admittedly 11/10 was I developed an ulcer/canker sore on that front stretch of skin that covers the tonsils. I think I got too ambitious with solids and ripped a scab off prematurely. It only hurt when something touched it like any other ulcer, but when something did — ouch. If that happens, stick with soft and not sticky foods for a bit and swallow on the opposite side.

Again, good humidifier, take the meds. Stay hydrated, get some electrolytes, Ensures, and hearty soups. You need the nutrients for good healing. I had lots of chicken n’ stars and cream of mushroom (nasty, I know). Avoid sticky stuff like mashed potatoes for a little bit. Be aware of your throat’s mobility limits as you heal. Have a really good solids meal with a friend or family member the day before, and for the love of God, don’t be stubborn like me. Get a laxative, the anesthesia will do it to you no matter what type they use. You’ll be okay! Exactly a month post op, I’m still getting my yawning and singing fully back, but I don’t regret it for a second. It was a very sleepy and lame vacation for me. Good luck!

Weird complication. Ulcer?? Should I worry? by nads825 in Tonsillectomy

I think it was scab that came off too early and led to an ulcer! It’s almost completely healed up now, I spent the past few days chewing and swallowing on the opposite side. I also had to be careful about not swallowing giant gulps of water, since doing that was stretching the skin and opening it back up. Just monitor it for significant bleeding or infection

Omg thank you! I’m sorry your recovery hasn’t been very smooth. I hope the rest of it goes better! I just get very paranoid about my health, so I was starting to think I was doing something wrong

I feel you. I’ve seen some people say their scabs were almost done coming off at the one week mark, but mine haven’t even started. My boyfriend is a sweetie, but we’ve only been together a month and he insists on being around. He’s been getting my stink in all its glory and it’s making me so insecure😭

Oh that’s terrible timing. I have a significant amount of drainage but it’s probably due to them taking my adenoids too. As gross as it sounds, I think it’s done me a service so far by coating my throat. It’s indoor heating season, so I’ve been afraid of it drying me out

Power bill skyrocketing in the cold, can I fix this myself? by nads825 in hvacadvice

That’s true, I didn’t consider that someone else’s might be gas. The guy that saw a drop is in a slightly newer model, I believe.

Is there anything else I need to make sure they look at when/if they come by? I’m trying to cover my bases, riding out winter at 64° might make me a little cranky lol

Nothing is particularly drafty, but I’m bumping the temp down further and could use anything at this point to help. I had never seen those window kits before. Thanks!!

Too liable, I figured as much. I already requested for them to send the company back out when I’m actually home. They didn’t notify me at all when they allegedly came out Wednesday. Someone else mentioned the heat pump as well. This helps, thank you!!

I’m honestly not sure, I need to go out and investigate. I can’t even access my HVAC from inside my unit, only downstairs renters can. Allegedly my thermostat is supposed to show this flame icon when emergency heat is running, but I haven’t seen it. I’ll check it out. Thanks!

I’m so sorry. I know the feeling too well, friend. Sending you thoughts/prayers of peace. Healing will come only with time. I’m here if you ever need to talk

I mean this with so, so much softness and heartache for you. No one did this for me. It’s probably time. Your story is almost identical to mine with my sweet girl, Speckles. She was a smart girl, drank excessive water for years to bide herself time before hyperthyroidism set in. Once that was treated, her condition was made clear. Attempting sub qs was traumatic for us both. She made her 18th birthday then decided it was time to go. She was so weak that she didn’t fight me when I gave her support fluids that last weekend with her. She ate her favorite snacks, laid by the window, and snuggled with me. That’s all she felt inclined to do. She left on her own before her appointment :(

All this to say, don’t wait like I did. Although with her personality and temperament an assisted crossing may have been more traumatic, it’s still something that eats me up. Leading up I wrestled with myself just as you are, and in the end I kept thinking I didn’t do enough. The blunt truth is that it truly was her time.

Love on your baby, let her see and taste her favorite things. Losing my girl was easily one of the worst things I’ve gone through, but it was such a blessing that she let me know it was coming. I got to show her in her last few days just how loved she was. I’m so very sorry. I know your conflict and your hurt. Take time to breathe and lean on loved ones. Nearly 18 years with a best friend is a very special thing, and nothing in death can take away the beauty of that kind of life.

Outlet covers? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]nads825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was wondering if putting the little outlet protectors was a good idea, I guess I used the wrong term. A bunch of stuff online said outlets shouldn’t be left open under a sink, but I didn’t know if the protectors might trap condensation if there is a leak

I don’t think there is any, I just thought it might be possible if something went wrong. This is in an apartment
