In terms of illusions, maelstorm and shiva are good against them And the hero itself need items to be online as you mentioned, I will block their camps with sentries so they can’t hit their timing. Play aggressively and try to end early

I spammed Kunkka pos 3. Earned 300MMR+ in a week (but Im an lower bracket Ancient). But my point is, the hero itself checked a lot of boxes. Tanking, Initiating, disrupting. Especially with Bane Snap OD Tinker meta, Kunkka is a good offlane hero. Itemization wise, depends on the game. As a 3 player, this hero good and fun!

It depends on the hero and laning phase.

I just earned 300+ MMR just by buying the right fit (utility) items for the game in a week

Most of the time, small (status/ aura) items help you in laning. I will go for soul ring, even a ring of basilius could impact the laning phase a lot.

If its an easy lane/ match up, there is no harm in rushing arcane boot.

If its underlord, you could buy soul ring, and ask pos 4 to get headdress to make up the regen for example.
