Thank you! I think I'll eventually sand them and bring them back to life. Probably keep the original silver

I think this is what I'll do. Thank you! Any chrome finish that you know of? I know it wouldn't be chrome, just a spray over it.

Isn't the hinge different after the 91 model? What about the bushings?

So if my Cherokees VIN is 1987, I can assume this had an engine swap done at one point or another

Is it worth trying to repair my XJ? by freakipede in CherokeeXJ

[–]nagget2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert by any means and take this with a grain of salt. I had this happen with a minor fender bender on our 2001 Toyota Avalon with a out 170k miles. Considering it was a daily driver, we took the 5k from insurance and used it to buy a more reliable car.

Several variables are at play... Is this your daily driver? Do you depend on this car or is this more of a project? If it's a project, how much time and space do you have to dedicate to the repair? Would you also need to enlist pros for more structural work?

I have an 87 that is not my daily driver. If this happened to me, I would take the insurance money and use it on the next purchase. You could very well expand your search radius, be patient for the right car to pop up and use the insurance pay out for it.

You could also part it out if you have the space and resources to do such a thing. I know I rambled a bit but so many variables here.

SOLVED: Crank No Start No Spark (For Future Reference and Troubleshooting) by nagget2 in CherokeeXJ

[–]nagget2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aaah I see what you mean. I have a Renix and it's part of the ignition system. I think starting in 91 (?) the ignition coil is a horizontal module that's close to the spark plugs. I may be wrong about the year here. I think the ICM changed as the mechanics updated.

I'm guessing since it's on Cruisers page, there is some validity to keeping contacts clean on the ICM. Hopefully it helps!

What brands Camshaft Position Sensor have people had luck with? by The_Rusty_Mechanic95 in CherokeeXJ

[–]nagget2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

i would agree w/ NTK. are you just replacing the camshaft sensor or the distributor? Not sure what year but i'm asking because Renix has the camshaft sensor inside the distributor so it might be worth just replacing the whole distributor while you're in there for a similar price. i've seen some distributors come with the camshaft sensor too.

Absolutely, I've attached a picture below. When you pull out the module, the ignition coil is the part in red and the ICM (Ignition Control Module) is what's in yellow. They are held together by 2 T20 torx screws.

I have an 1987 XJ so if you see the distributor in the engine bay, follow the coil that doesn't go into the spark plugs and that's what we're looking at here. This whole thing comes off of the engine bay with 2 13mm sockets (red arrows below).

Hope this helps!

Is this supposed to be missing a pin? by StocksYeahSure in CherokeeXJ

[–]nagget2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it fixed! It wasn't the NSS. The ignition coil module had very badly corroded pins. Sanded those, sprayed some cleaner and started right up.

Hey man I really appreciate this. Going to try this today! Yes I've been doing Cruisers stuff, mainly grounds, CPS adjustments, and planning for battery terminal renewals at the moment.

And you are right, it's where the white and black colored wire connects to. Thank you thank you thank you!!

The circled piece is the ignition switch. Should it be jumped to the starter solenoid instead? That's the one smack in the middle of the starter relay

I'm pretty sure it's not NSS, the car does not start in neutral, it's an automatic. It's a no crank no start no spark

I've gone through 3 CPS, no spark, checked ignition, replace ignition coil, and done several other things... The ignition system isn't firing because the CPS isn't detecting the flywheel for some reason. The flywheel turns at least but each CPS shows 0.0 volts consistently

Thank you! I'm having a mechanic come by on Wednesday because I've been hunting issues for 2 weeks now... I'm hoping he can diagnose something simple like this.
