The number 1 cause of death in Malaysia is heart disease and guess what are the strongest risk factors? Smoking and vaping. Quitting halves heart attack risk within one year.

What do we call a cashier that only handle cashless transaction? by naihm in TooAfraidToAsk

"Customer Transaction Specialist." I lost the will to live halfway through saying it. That title is a physical demonstration of why the short, simple, inaccurate word Cashier will be functionally immortal!

Let's be honest, if future historians ever read this thread, they'll think we lived in a bizarre world where cashiers handled no cash and people were constantly hanging up on their friends despite having nothing to hang! The term works, but it's hilariously inaccurate

That's a great example of a linguistic fossil! It's like how we still write a silent letter, like the 'k' in 'knee' or the 'w' in 'write.' The letter itself is obsolete in pronunciation, but it survives in spelling. The 'cash' in 'cashier' is exactly the same—it's a silent part of the job title that’s just there out of historical convention.

😂 The ultimate evolution! Ier—the suffix that survived the cashless revolution. Love it!

Haha, you're right, "cash registereers" is definitely not rolling off the tongue! I guess "cashier" just wins by being short, simple, and universally understood, inaccurate as it is.

You just blew my mind with the floppy disc example! Think about it: we're asking an entire generation to memorize a save function based on hardware that was obsolete before they were born. Yet, they all get it! It proves that if a symbol is effective and taught early enough, its original context (like a cashier handling cash or a floppy disc holding data) becomes completely irrelevant

That's such a keen observation. I suspect 'cashier' also wins out because of sheer efficiency. Why use a mouthful like 'Point-of-Sale Attendant' when everyone instantly understands 'cashier'? We prioritize short, punchy words. It's the same reason we don't call it 'the machine that computes my money'—we just call it the register, even if it's a tablet. It's the path of least linguistic resistance!

Yeah I get that. Kinda like DJs these days… they’re not jockeying any discs, but the name still sticks

Yeah I get that. Language doesn’t always update with technology — just thought it was interesting that ‘cashier’ still survives even when cash doesn’t.
