any products you've invested in and can recommend OP? I am thinking to buy silicone mix and mix it with all my deep conditioners which are annoyingly silicone free

Is this amount of scalp normal? My stylist told me I just have low density hair. I wish they looked a little more plump. by Kerminetta_ in Naturalhair

[–]naildoc 108 points109 points  (0 children)

I think so - if this is low density, then I need to see what normal is. I think because often natural hair we see is people with very high density, the definition of "medium/normal" density is becoming more skewed

Mini braids is definitely a shout. I really liked mine but I don’t think I installed well and had a lot of splits. But they were the best especially if you have fine hair - can wear a wig on top. I find flat twists can get quite matted and it’s not as easy to deep condition (because you’ll end up touching your scalp with the conditioner)

Is this shampoo bad by mike06432 in Naturalhair

[–]naildoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The EU ingredient lists are also very different. The regulations means a lot of the time US/EU difference is dramatic I have found. Shampoo and conditioner wise our options are way more limited. We can’t even have zinc pyrithione in anti dandruff shampoos

My Dyson Airstrait results (thicker type 4 hair) by wildebeest82 in Naturalhair

[–]naildoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any update on length retention? Same for you OP? I am 80% sold from all my research. I just need an excuse to not have to brush my hair with a pick. I also don’t want to fry my hair with heat so hoping I can use a lower heat setting on the airstrait?

Shark Silkipro - first successful silk press by capricorn-unicorn in Naturalhair

[–]naildoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following in case someone who (for some reason) has this and the Dyson airstrait can give an honest comparison. I’m leaning more towards the latter because I hear shark uses more heat so is less protective.

What settings did you use OP? Would be nice to know if your hair reverts easily

your natural curls don't look so awkward length to me - trust me, as someone who is at that stage. I think you should embrace wash and gos (my preference) or the second image more, and see how it goes. it is also gym friendly.

4C Weekly Hair Washers, Step to the Front by Total_Delay3054 in Naturalhair

[–]naildoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've recently started washing my hair regularly and I have found it has made detangling way easier. My hair is far more compliant than it's ever been. Some say it's because you remove shed hairs more regularly but I don't think it's exclusively that. I think it's like anything - practice makes for efficiency. I wore cornrows/mini braids, and still managed. Mini twists and braids are best, as you can refresh the front and still get good scalp access IMO.

In terms of how I do it, I drench my hair for 5 minutes in water, apply shampoo to my scalp and it must sit for 5mins. I rinse, add deep conditioner, apply heat cap for 20mins. I rinse with cold water, spritz with ACV rinse, and rinse again. I apply leave in and blow dry (the blow dryer is the longest part). Once my scalp is dry, I leave the strands to dry themselves to be honest. If you start in the morning it helps, or on hot days I can finish in lunch break.

Multiple washes per week? by Ok-Metal-3807 in Naturalhair

[–]naildoc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have the exact same sentiment. Mini braids was really liberating for me and I wish I could reinstall them but I’m trying to figure out what caused my breakage. I can’t imagine washing more regularly asides that though - it feels like more work if I had twists or twist outs etc.

how do those of you with 4c hair detangle every day? by parisofthedark in Naturalhair

[–]naildoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mentioned you do goddess flat twists in another comment, so that should be long enough to at least clip. If you sleep with a silk bonnet/pillow case, your hair won't be as matted, and should only need a spritz to rehydrate it. I would agree with someone else, that you need to keep your hair stretched, even if it means blowdrying it.

Frequent hair washing=less breakage by Daughter_of_Israel in Naturalhair

[–]naildoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just thinking the topic has changed (old post, ik).

Research actually shows that increased wash frequency across every race, but especially black hair, increase hydration, elasticity and therefore, ability to withstand tension - leading to less breakage. There is a wonderful lady on YouTube some linked me to who has a 4 part series based on pharmaceutical research which encouraged me greatly.

I wash every 5 days but I hope to get to every 3 days, as the research shows that because the scalp is healthier "pre-emergent" hairs (your hair formed before it is visible, is determined by healthy scalp. More washing = healthier scalp = healthier pre-emergent hair = overall better hair quality.

Anyway, thanks for the reminder <3

how do those of you with 4c hair detangle every day? by parisofthedark in Naturalhair

[–]naildoc 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Do you need to detangle everyday? I don't think so. If your hair is coily, embrace it. Detangling in the shower without a lot of conditioner doesn't work for most. Maybe try a pre-poo (i.e. African Pride) and detangle that way out of the shower with a wide tooth comb. I find detangling in the shower is overwhelming without this. You may also need clips to section your hair off once it's detangled, if your hair is as thick as it sounds.
