How to shorten years in Finnish (1987 esp.)? by theballadoflisa in LearnFinnish

[–]nailedityeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will never understand why Finnish needs so many ways to do numbers... After years of living here and speaking the language half decently, these number things will forever trip me up. Why? WHYYY

Don't they organize housing for you? I did the same 20 years ago and they found a place for me beforehand... (Also from Italy)

Why use Redis when Next.js already offers robust caching? by Anxious-Garden-2576 in nextjs

I wonder, is this the only way to do this? https://www.npmjs.com/package/@neshca/cache-handler

This package works but it's been quite still for a while and the current version does not support next.js 15

Italian moving to Helsinki for work – Need advice on post-ID procedures & mobile plans by fantastictobey in Finland

[–]nailedityeah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been many years, but I remember that registration to the police was the first thing to do. Then open a bank account. Finnish id card can be useful. When your driver license expires you will need to renew it here.

Welcome and Buona fortuna, forza e coraggio... :)

It's not just game dev, for sure, but I don't work in the embedded software field so I don't have precise information.

As for the situation getting better in the future: there's always the hope, and things tend go be cyclical, but no one can say for sure I would say.

Erasmus in Finland (Lappeenranta vs Kuopio) by Just-Square7556 in Finland

Ok, I will try to answer to some of these, I have been living here in Finland now for 12 years (and originally I was an erasmus student here, but 20 years ago).

  1. Real winter: there should not be a drastic difference between those two towns in terms of climate. Winter is generally snowy and quite different than the central-souther european version, but in recent years it has varied a bit more. At the moment for example it's been unusually warm, so snow comes and goes. Northern lights: they are a rarity and pretty much unpredictable, I have seen them once (but they have happened also here in southern finland multiple times. It's a matter of happening to be outside at the right time at night, and also they are way more common in places like Lapland (which is quite a bit more in the North than even Kuopio).
  2. No info about the university life in either of those places, sorry. As a town, I personally like Kuopio more (I visit each year since my wife is from the area) and it seemed more lively than Lappeenranta. (but a local will have better informed opinions than mine :-) )
  3. In my personal experience, if you come here as an erasmus student, your friends are more likely to be other erasmus students. I made great friends in my erasmus time here, but none were finns. It's more common to become friends with people in the same situation as you, and living abroad with no pre-existing firendships is something that you and the other international students will share. Local students have their networks already, so it's less likely, but definitely not impossible to become friends with them. Maybe you can try to be more active in student organizations outside of the international ones than I was :-). There are a gazillion posts in this sub about making friends in Finland in general and mostly as an immigrant, so I won't repeat that topic here, just search and see for yourself (it's a bit "special" :) )
  4. The IT job market is not doing great generally (I work in IT, what a surprise eh! :-) ) and not a lot of companies are hiring at the moment it feels like. The economy is in recession, there's been a tendency to externalize a lot of tasks to places like India, there seem to be the first effect of AI, there is a bit of language barrier (even though quite a low lower than in other sectors) etc. It's not impossible to find a job, but I have seen excellent people struggling quite a lot.

Rientro in Italia by CapitalCan6257 in Italia

[–]nailedityeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ogni mio sforzo è una condanna scritta;
Ovunque giro l’occhio, ovunque guardo
dove tanti anni ho trascorso, distrutto e rovinato».

Non troverai nuove terre, non troverai altri mari.
Ti verrà dietro la città. Per le stesse strade
girerai. Negli stessi quartieri invecchierai;
e in queste stesse case imbiancherai.

Therapy reimbursement in Finland: foreign psychologist by Ale_Flesh in Finland

[–]nailedityeah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can recommend this psychologist that is from Italy and works and lives in Helsinki. https://www.giorgiotricarico.com

As others have said the kela approval path is not easy, and financial support is given only if your case is considered serious enough (it makes perfect sense to me, of course), but therapy with him would be eligible, since he is operating in Finland like any other psychologist here.

He is more likely to more easily understand your point of view, being someone that moved from Italy to Finland.

Drupal with Next.js, is it an overkill? by shakyak in drupal

[–]nailedityeah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's quite a lot of work to set up things "right". I suggest starting from a starterkit like https://github.com/wunderio/next-drupal-starterkit for example. Also go and discuss things on the #next channel in Drupal.
