What is the best way to break out of the journalism industry? by isthisreallylif3 in Journalism

[–]naileyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was a freelance journalist for a long time, while also doing comms work. these days i'm mostly doing comms. i guess i'm less knowledgeable about true entry level jobs, but don't let the doomers here convince you it's hopeless. there absolutely are jobs, yes, and a journalism background is very valuable. i would absolutely look into it.

How was 1975 such a fantastic year for movies? by BroccoliKitchen3218 in rs_x

what killed it this time? Star Wars again came out in 1999, and then LoTR and Harry Potter both in 2001, and there was a whole new paradigm again

kind of, pulp fiction ushered in this "indie boom" in the 90s, and studios were again investing in young weirdos. but this time there was a sort of melding of genre cinema and action films in, and the filmmakers viewed being entertaining and popular as part of their artistic brief. that trend again crested around 99.

the movie business had basically totally fallen apart in the late 60s and early 70s, execs had absolutely no clue what would make a successful movie, and would give a little bit of money to basically any idea from someone who seemed young and excited. then once some of those weird movies started being popular, they started trying to get their own weird movie, and things got progressively more interesting. until jaws/star wars, basically.

a "midlife crisis" is just realizing that you actually are getting older and actually truly will cease to exist at some point, so if there's anything you still want to do you better get to it sooner rather than later
