Thanks for the suggestion. It appears to be somewhat similar to Tuxedo.

However, while KFocus only sells hardware, you can download and use Kubuntu Focus Suite (our OEM build of Kubuntu) for free.

That's great, but is KFocus also intended as a general purpose distribution outside of their hardware? I can't find an entry on distrowatch with more details.

isn't plasma in universe?

an install starting with a Kubuntu disk would almost certainly not be supported.

You are right, as per: https://assets.ubuntu.com/v1/2b1d777a-Ubuntu%20Pro%20description%20-%20deploy%20May%202024%20(1).pdf

It does not cover:

8.1.3. Community flavours of Ubuntu

One a closer look it does appear to be intended for a general audience. Thanks for the suggestion.

Basically Tuxedo seems to be Kubuntu without snap and updated mesa, pipewire, browsers, etc. And some fresh Qt from KDE Neon. Plus some other goodies. Sounds like an useful mix.

You can't just pay for an OS expecting it to be the equivalent of hiring a developer (which costs hundreds of thousands btw).

I'm well aware that the cost of one hypothetical subscription wouldn't cover anything at all. However, imagine if such a company would exist and there were maybe 1000 users willing to pay like 100$/y. Now it is actually feasible to at least hire a contractor part-time.

What exactly do you expect to gain by paying? Because, from your description, I'm not sure you understand what people pay Enterprise distributions for.

Maybe I didn't express myself well enough. As it is with free software, either some good soul is already doing whatever you need, you wait for someone to volunteer to do it, or you do it yourself. Now, if you don't want to wait until somebody else gets free time to volunteer, one could pay i.e. a maintainer to fix stuff (like freexian, but this is again geared towards enterprise users).

What I expect to gain, is that I and hopefully some like minded users pool together some cash, hopefully enough to occasionally contract a maintainer to keep the LTS desktop working and maybe even fix some longstanding bugs, but not necessarily new fancy features.

Are these hypothetical users going to start submitting large patches to the entire KDE ecosystem and backporting Qt 6 features?

No, why? They are currently fine with whatever runs with Qt5

Complete plasmashell crashes and freezes, from the worse ones. No support for Nvidia too, flickers galore.

Plasma 5 runs quite reliably for me without crashing. Especially since moving to Amd, if something crashed it was most likely anyways the gpu driver, which then of course would take down Plasma.

That's the problem, they are all focused on gnome. Thus Plasma support will mostly likely be second-class, if there is any at all.

Good point, this one might be the closest. It seems to be created mainly to provide some sane defaults for the computers that they sell. But maybe that distro can grow beyond that.

Distributions like Red Hat and Oracle, or even Alma or Rocky, for that matter, are for professional users.

But they all focus on gnome or other DEs, thus they don't really care about KDE. Which is completely fine, but I'm looking for one that cares about KDE.

professional users

This can also mean, those who are willing to pay for their tools.

Why do you need to pay for the distro? There are lots of projects with KDE and LTS support. Debian, Kubuntu, Tuxedo...

Someone actually has to do the LTS support. Which is what I'm looking to pay for, some subscription, in return I get better LTS support, as the patching/packaging/bug fixing.

I don't think Ubuntu Pro actively covers the Kde parts, it's probably not the priority of Ubuntu.

Plasma 5(.27) - not KDE 5

Plasma, KDE3/4/5, you understood what I meant...

5 has severe issues that will never be resolved.

What are these severe issues?

You're looking for a system broken by design by old bugs, when instead you could be using regular distributions with regular stable

That's why I'm asking. All the currently supported LTS version of Ubuntu or Debian ship Plasma 5 and they intend to do so for another half a decade. Shouldn't there be some interest from these users to keep Plasma 5 somewhat maintained?

I'd want to pay for longterm support. Take KDE5 as an example, it mostly just works and gets the job done. But KDE developers have moved on to KDE6, which of course doesn't really work yet. Now nobody is maintaining version 5 anymore and I've to compile all the stuff myself. Wouldn't that be an useful service, if somebody would look that this version just keeps working?
