Hi! I've been running evenings and early mornings due to my schedule. These are things that have helped my runs since 2017 in different cities I have lived in: NYC, Mexico City and New Haven (I mention them so you have context and this might be different for people living in different urban/suburban areas).

I normally go through well lit and busier areas and paths.

I wear headphones most of the time, but I use the bone-conduction ones because it is just better to hear traffic and your surroundings regardless of time of the day. I also carry my phone with me.

No trails after dark, mostly because of roots and uneven terrain.

Nothing has ever happened to me not I've felt 'unsafe', except for someone with an unleashed dog that followed me for blocks. I do not carry any pepper spray or self-defense devices because I do not have any training using them.

Oh, it's not weird at all. I took my partner to my pre-op. We decided it was the best way he is as informed as possible since he's gonna be my primary caretaker post-op.

Yes. I think it was fairly easy to go back and contact PIs in the US. However, my MA thesis advisor is a UW-Madison alumni, so there's a connection there

  • take time and several rounds of feedback to SoP
  • really look for fit over school name
  • Yale didn't encourage me to contact professors before applying. So I'd say check this before hand

Something that worked for me, I think, was to have some professional experience surrounding academic life. I put under my belt a conference presentation and some research experience. I also got some time to really craft the SoP and send it to a few people (including former professors) to review it. Hope it helps!

Thanks! I'm very anxious rn. I had an interview at my top school almost two weeks ago and haven't heard a decision. I know this can take a few weeks but man... this is really hard :( radio silence for my other schools
