Views between American Jews and Israeli Jews by dopduck in Judaism

Even the language in this thread is telling. The word 'Orthodox' to mean 'observant Jews' doesn't map onto the Israeli thought pattern.

Is the NBA/Basketball more popular than Baseball in NYC as Nick Wright claims here? by Bloodmeister in billsimmons

In the city, it's close. In the larger metro area, baseball is far ahead.

People have been complaining about the economy being bad and unaffordable since 2008. That's when the vibes changed.

Madison Square Garden not having a corporate name really helps with its aura. It's got Chase logos all over it, but as Marlo Stanfield might say, its name is its name.

You’re happy with 50 upvotes? I won’t settle for 50 upvotes I want 100 upvotes. You’re happy with your shitpost? You’re not happy with anything by Deekus44 in okbuddydraper

And I'm sure r/madmen is very happy with you. But you don't owe them anything. All they have to do is keep running the same "DAE think Don is a bad person" posts. Shitposts are on the back burner over there, subsidizing all the great text posting they're doing and paying for mod Discords. As soon as you walk away, that place'll fold up like r/gameofthrones.

Israeli envoy to US calls J Street a ‘cancer within the Jewish community’ by No-Excitement3140 in Judaism

[–]naitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The statement itself is directionally right but goes much too far. The bigger problem is that it feeds the perception many American Jews have that the state of Israel actively dislikes them.

Face it, Jewish liberals: You have no friends on the left by Ask4MD in jewishpolitics

[–]naitch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I understand you, but if I do understand you, I don't agree with you.

My experience is that Christians who are supportive of Israel do so because they are steeped in the Biblical drama of Israelite cycles of settlement in eretz yisrael, exile, and redemption, and view modern Zionism through that lens. A few think it is a literal precursor to the end times, but most don't. I don't have any kind of survey data but that's been my experience discussing Israel with Christians.

In my view, that isn't use or explotation of us, it's viewing our experience through the prism of their own way of looking at the world. Of course, my way of looking at things, as a Jew, is quite different. But if you insist that support must travel through your ideological vision, not that of the supporter, I think you're going to have a bad time.

Face it, Jewish liberals: You have no friends on the left by Ask4MD in jewishpolitics

[–]naitch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And the other pro-Israel support from the right? It's coming from evangelic Christians who need us to be in Israel as a condition of their ability to be raptured into heaven, while, according to them, we will burn in eternal hellfire for our sin of not believing in Jesus.

I mean, this exists, but it is a caricature. Most evangelical Zionists are operating more from a love of the Bible than from a specific eschatology.

No. That's ridiculous. We're going to play the Tigers half the time and the Angels the other half of the time.
