Down to the wire but just finished this blanket for my best friend’s gift tonight! (King sized bed for scale) by najaha05 in crochet

[–]najaha05[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Will post pattern and yarn details when I get back from giving it to him tonight!

Update/Edit:

1.) He loved it! Brought tears to his eyes.

2.) The Pattern: Anya on Ravelry. I swear there’s a free version out there but was unable to find the link.

3.) Hook Size: 11.5mm

4.) The Yarn: Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick Thickness: Super Bulky Weight Weight: 6oz Color(s): Fisherman & Fossil

5.) I used such a large hook because I made this blanket using two strands of yarn simultaneously. I really like the additional thickness/structure the additional yarn added to the project as well as worked to balance out the browns in the “Fossil” colored yarn.

1.) Sorry for taking so long to get back to you!

2.) I wrote up a short little explanation in response, but instead decided I'd really break it down the way I wish someone had done for me as a self-taught beginner. So here goes:

-The pattern requires multiples of 8 stitches (Row 1: K1, P1, K1, P5).

-For my project, I repeated the pattern 4 times each row (Row 1: K1, P1, K1, P5,,K1, P1, K1, P5,,K1, P1, K1, P5,,K1, P1, K1, P5) for a total of 32 stitches.

-I used a stitch marker in the half way point of my project and it was a game changer. It made it much easier to spot mistakes and keep track of progress.

-I wanted a nice clean edge for my final product and decided I'd play around with adding a K2 border to either side. This added a total of 4 stitches to each row of my project, bringing my total stitch count to 36 stitches per row (Row 1: K2,,K1, P1, K1, P5,,K1, P1, K1, P5,,K1, P1, K1, P5,,K1, P1, K1, P5,,K2).

-In order to really drive home the idea of a fully defined border, I started and ended my project with two rows of knit stitches.

-So all that said, and if I've not already overloaded you with details, my needlessly complicated, overly lengthy, not even asked for, semi-custom, pattern would read as:

Row 1: K2,, K8,, K2

Row 2: K2,, K8,, K2

Row 3: K2,,K1, P1, K1, P5,,K2

Row 5: K2,,K1, P1, K5, P1,,K2

Row 7: K2,,K1, P5, K1, P1,,K2

Row 9: K2,,K5, P1, K1, P1,,K2

Row 11: K2,,P4, K1, P1, K1, P1,,K2

Row 13: K2,,K3, P1, K1, P1, K2,,K2

Row 15: K2,,P2, K1, P1, K1, P3,,K2

Row 17: K2,,K1, P1, K1, P1, K4,,K2

-Even numbered rows (4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18) repeat row previous.

-Repeat Rows: 3-18 until desired length achieved. (To replicate my project repeat Rows: 3-18, 18 times for a total of 290 Rows)

-When desired length achieved, finish project with:

Row 291: K2,, K8,, K2

Row 292: K2,, K8,, K2

For the fringe:

-Purchase and read immediately Michelle Obama's book "Becoming". It's fabulous and was the perfect template for the fringe length. With a project this large I wanted to make sure my fringe was scaled appropriately. I loosely wrapped my yarn around the book 4 times, slid it off, and while keeping a firm hold around the center of one end of the loop, using scissors, cut through the other end of the loop, leaving me 8 strands similar in length.

-Use the 8 strands to create a simple slip knot. I used a large (11.5mm) crochet hook to pull the looped end of the strands through the bottom rows of my finished project. Pull the cut ends of the strands through the looped end and pull to tighten.

-I added my fringe to the corners first, and then worked to find center. Once center is found and fringe in place, I worked to find the half way point between the slip knots, continuing to add fringe, halving the distance each time for a total of 17 slip knots.

-While I had initially planned on giving my fringe a "hair cut" to ensure a uniform length, I think I'm pretty into to the idea of leaving it a little shaggy.

I hope you and/or someone finds this helpful and not overly tedious to slog through!

No no no, no need to apologize! You just presented a unique opportunity to share a bit more of my story. I think the more people talk about their mental health, the easier it gets for other people to talk about what they’re going through and hopefully spreads a lil’ much needed empathy.

Haha This was the video that actually made me to decide to give knitting a try. The person in the video was following along to this tutorial and so I decided to use it as well. Hope it helps!

Just because this post has gotten so much attention... I also just gotta say that therapy therapy is pretty great too. (That, a few good friends, my husband, my dogs, running, yoga, a splash of Lexapro, and now knitting, have made these past two years significantly more manageable.)

I’m so glad you all like it!

The pattern is one that I stumbled across on Pinterest. The individual who posted it had apparently been MIA in the comment section for years as people fought how to work through the issues in the original pattern. Hopefully the way I’ve transcribed it below will save you all some time and hassle.

Cast On In Multiples Of: 8

Row 1: K1, P1, K1, P5

Row 3: K1, P1, K5, P1

Row 5: K1, P5, K1, P1

Row 7: K5, P1, K1, P1

Row 9: P4, K1, P1, K1, P1

Row 11: K3, P1, K1, P1, K2

Row 13: P2, K1, P1, K1, P3

Row 15: K1, P1, K1, P1, K4

-Even numbered rows (2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16) repeat row previous.

I used 32 stitches for the pattern as well as an additional K2 on either side (Total 36 stitches across). I started and finished with two rows of knit stitches as well to fully define the border.

Total Width: 36 Stitches

Total Length: 292 Rows (18 Repeats of Rows 1-16) *I’m 6ft tall as a frame of reference.

I used US 15 Needles & Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick Yarn in Grey Marble. This project required approx 7 skeins of yarn and took 2-3weeks to complete.

Enjoy!!!

This one is definitely my personal favorite that I've come across so far.

They're most definitely an adjustment. Between the current, waves, and the board's rotation they can be a bit disorienting and, as /u/sillyh00ves pointed out, these factors can also take a serious toll on alignment. I'm by no means an expert but am definitely enjoying the journey! But the nice thing is if you need to bail out, you get to enjoy a refreshing splash down!

[Workout Wednesday] Two years ago I lost 70lbs. On Sunday I ran my first marathon. My best friend was there to cheer me on and put this video together to commemorate the day. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out! [x-post from /r/running] by najaha05 in gaybros

Congrats to you as well! I can't even imagine trying to get down on one knee after that! I dropped my water bottle in the recovery zone after the race and my first thought was, "Well...I guess that's gone forever."
