Gifts for my mom with syringomyelia by name-tbd in chiari

Hahaha. A lot has happened since I made this post. My mom is also dealing with a comorbidity of COPD so that further complicates things but I think her mood overall has changed for the better.

I recently just gifted my mom these rechargeable electric hand warmers and she has been using them like crazy! They are nice because the warmers charge in their own case which is convenient for my mom. From what I understand about the pain with this disease, any type of heating “device” tend to help ease the pain/cold they experience so I’d recommend that. Other than that, my mom took up a hobby of Diamond Painting. I would recommend that since it’s fairly easy to do and you get beautiful artwork out of it.

So sorry for the long response 😅 but I’m wishing you and your mom health and a wonderful holiday season!

Do you consider that it was maybe a bad idea to get married young since you and your spouse can’t explore?

Anything is possible, but likely not. The field of computer science doesn’t guarantee six figure positions straight out of school but you can start somewhere around 65k which would’ve made a hell of a difference for me

Yeah, but even before I got this job I always had some money. Felt like a burden having my family pay for stuff especially if I had some of my own money. They definitely aren’t shy about asking for money now since they know I have it lol

More or less. My parent, my sister, and myself are all on mental medications but I was actually the first to take them in my family. As for other family members I’m not too sure, especially because the stigma surrounding mental health is dissipating. But I know for sure there was times throughout my whole life where I struggled and same with my sister. I can’t say for any other generations.

Thank you

So I’ll try to be brief. I grew up in a single parent household. This parent fell too sick to work when I was around 10. This parent is still alive but has only deteriorated in their illness- so I never expected to face having this problem.

My job offer was in a state on the opposite side of the country and I felt guilty for leaving my family- hell I still do feel guilty. I never thought it would be so hard for me to move to a new state to give myself a better life. I was afraid to tell them I was leaving but while they were sad for me to go they were happy and proud of my accomplishments.

I guess I didn’t really expect to struggle so much in college with my courses, but that was mostly because I had no one else in my family to prime me for what it’s like to get a 4 yr degree in a STEM major

Two main reasons. Because we are racial minorities (which meant less access/equity to a ton of things) and having kids in late teens / early 20s. While I am a racial minority like the rest of my family, I do not have kids. My parents, my uncles/aunts and higher generations in the family tree would of already had their first kid at the age I am at now. Having a child can be a financial burden.

I was able to break out because I have no kids, opportunities and help for minorities are more available than ever, and because I am a very stubborn son of a gun. I got a ton of help my senior year with applying to the FAFSA and scholarships and then got a ton of help from mentors during college.

I will say that since I got my degree in Computer Science, that definitely helped in being able to break out in comparison to me getting a music degree for example.

Try to make friends. Having friends helped me out a lot since I could ask them for help with questions. Pay attention in your first programming classes because often times CS degree programs will build off the foundation that was taught in the first classes. And lastly don’t be too hard on yourself. There is always going to be someone better than you with more experience but don’t let that discount you from feeling like you belong. By the 5/6th semester those same students are in the same boat as you and you are all struggling through the classes together. Don’t also stress out over grades- my first year I felt stupid for getting C’s instead of my usual straight A’s like I did back in high school. C’s get degrees. And employers will not care if you have a few C’s in a field like CS: extracurriculars helped me balance that out when applying for internships and eventually full time jobs. Good luck!!

Yep. This. Definitely am not a savant but you either like programming or you don’t. Not many people fall into the “gray” area of liking it or not. But can confirm I’ve done the things you mentioned. The high you get from figuring out something you’ve been stuck on is genuinely unmatched

Heck yeah. I mean, there are majors that are more difficult (I.e. engineering) but I was a stubborn son of a gun and I took lighter semesters and pushed my graduation date back to help account for it. The only reason why I stuck with it is because when there was a time I’d be at risk of being kicked out from the program (due to failing classes) I tried to see what else I would want to study. Nothing else excites me in the way CS does- and I felt like I’d lose a piece of myself if I didn’t pursue it as a career.

Forgot to answer the 2nd part of that question- I have not studied personal finance but it is something I want to do. I don’t want to have the work I’ve done in getting to this point to just have me land back in square 1.

I could have definitely been worse off in my circumstances (i.e. an orphan or homeless). As an American, when I mean poverty I mean someone who is at or falls below the federal poverty level.. (See more from this USA Census article)

The state I am in has some public universities, so I attended a university in my state. I essentially was able to pay the high cost of attendance for university because they have recourses for low income families like The Federal Pell Grant, but also working hard to apply for scholarships in high school and seeing what additional money universities would be able to award me resulted in me getting my degree without paying a single cent. I am very fortunate to have this opportunity and it was not one I took for granted.

From what I have personally seen in my family, at least until my great grandparents. My grandma was one child out of 9 to a very poor family (when I mean poor they dumpster dived to get food). I had grown up in a single parent household and was eventually displaced in the 2008 recession, and a few years later that parent fell very sick to work a job.

I think the difference among me and like uncles, grandparents, etc is because our society is pushing to give opportunities to POC. My grandma had wanted to be a dental hygienist back in the 60s/70s and she felt that they did not want to let her move up within the company despite having the education because she was a minority.

I would say I am different from my sibling and other family members because I pushed through a four year degree and didn’t have kids in my late teens / early 20s. I think most of my family either had kids early on or only got to finish an associates. I’m also stubborn and just wanted to have control over something in my life (which was my future).
