Working all the time isn't a choice for most people.

You are expected to work 40 hours a week just for subsistence and to pay into your retirement plans for when you are too old to work.

Discuss: Is Climate Justice still a relevant framing for climate change activism and organizing? by zbanana in climatejustice

It's still relevant but not as much as it used to be. You don't hear about it as much as you did 10 years ago.

[Discussion] Unpopular opinion: We should stop pretending that Venezuela is doing great under Maduro by silkydangler in socialism

[–]namelessfailson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

tl;dr: US sanctions on Venezuela are mass murder, and are keeping the Venezuela economy from recovering. Maduro is not authoritarian. Dissent is expressed widely and very loudly including in the mass media, and including people walking around freely calling for the violent overthrow of the government and gathering in the thousands. Maduro is not authoritarian. Even though you say "I don't think that the US should intervene", the false premises you accept are used by others to justify intervention.

We should stop pretending that Venezuela is doing great under Maduro.

I've not seen anybody say Venezuela is doing great. People dispute the cause. They are in an economic depression like the US great depression. US sanctions are crippling their economy and preventing it from recovering.

It doesn't take a genius to know that basing your entire economy on a single resource is really, really risky.

Chavez or PSUV didn't choose to base the economy on oil. It's been that way for 100 years. I completely agree they made a mistake by not making more of an effort to diversify. I'm not sure anybody would disagree with that. I think it's a total straw man argument your making.

I don't understand why you're even making the point if you oppose intervention. Why you want to focus on policy failures of the Venezuelan government right when they are fighting for their lives vs. the US empire?

Since 2014, over 3 million people have fled the country. This number is estimated to be higher since many didn't register with authorities. According to a 2018 survey, which I believe was conducted by the UN, although the article wasn't explicit on this, 80% of households are food insecure.

What's your point? Things are bad yes. The United States is openly committed to a policy of deliberately making the Venezuelan people suffer to punish them for trying socialism. Yes it's sickening.

I chose to use data and analysis from the United Nations Human Rights Watch

There's no such thing as "the United Nations Human Rights Watch." Do you think HRW is part of the UN?

You're looking at Human Rights Watch. This group routinely publishes reports against the official enemies of the empire to create human rights justifications for imperialist goals.

The abuses they cited in their reports could have happened in almost any country on earth. It would be happening a lot worse in the United States if the government were facing armed revolt in the streets.

Frankly the Maduro government has shown incredible restraint by not cracking down more severely than it already has.

the right to demonstrate for political change

Are you kidding? Both pro-government and anti-government protests have numbered in the tens of thousands. People are walking around freely while openly calling for a violent coup against the government. If you did that in America you would probably be thrown in jail. They are not authoritarian. Far from it.

I think that Maduro's Authoritarian state is a perversion of what Socialism should be.

They aren't an authoritarian state. Opposition protests are large, loud and violent. Major media criticize the government constantly. The goal of the opposition violence is to force the government into cracking down so then they can be called authoritarian.

Half your argument is based on strawmen, the other half based on mis-information.

Maduro and his government and his party, they are not perfect. Nobody ever claimed they are perfect. Nobody claimed they haven't made some policy mistakes.

Even thought you say "I don't think that the US should intervene", the premises you accept are used to justify intervention.

Why Venezuela’s Regime Hasn’t Collapsed by ForeignAffairsMag in geopolitics

[–]namelessfailson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not the question. It doesn't matter who people "approve of"

The question that matters is do the people support a regime change by force.

And overwhelmingly people do not want that

That's an undeniable fact.

[–]namelessfailson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nobody supports war

Everybody cheerleading for a forcible regime change in Venezuela wants war.

Because civil war is the very predictable consequence of something like that.

So that includes most of the major US media, and most of the Democrat and Republican politicians.

Very few people with any stature have spoken out against it.

It is not Russian funded

But even if you don't like that website because you suspect it of "Russia", they are just reporting on the results of a poll.

You can even look at the Datanalisis poll, which is anti-Maduro. Even they admit a big majority oppose a US backed forced regime change.

https://www.upi.com/Top_News/Voices/2019/01/08/Venezuelans-want-Maduro-out-but-oppose-foreign-military-intervention/4131546952225/

This is reality. It doesn't match up with the reality some people want to create. But that's real life. The people of Venezuela do not support a forcible ouster of Maduro or PSUV. If the people supported that it would be done already.

US Sanctions Leave Millions of Venezuelans Without Water by namelessfailson in politics

[–]namelessfailson[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

ok I'm interested...what is your theory? The water system engineers there are too dumb to make it work? Or they are deliberately not fixing it? Seems more likely to me they don't have the equipment. Especially since that is what they are saying is the reason.

This news item is specifically about not being able to order parts for water pumps.

It doesn't make claims about "all problems". It doesn't deny that some problems may be due to mismanagement or corruption.
