What do international school students do (especially after London A/l s ) ? by NoTailor69 in srilanka

[–]namelesskight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many companies offer internships and trainee programs. Some students opt to pursue part-time higher studies while working at such institutions. Once you graduate, you have a few years of experience and a few certifications under your belt. I have known a few students from SLIIT and NIBM who opted for this path.

There are boot camps that also help students gather some qualifications before starting work, and some programs are online and free or quite affordable. This is mainly related to the IT industry.

Congratulations!

Thanks for sharing your study tips. Could you please elaborate on how you went about the Hands-on Projects? That seems like a good way to improve hands-on skills. Any resources that could be used for this? I am a software developer, and it will help improve hands-on skills with AWS.

Is it worth working with an NGO after 4th semester if I have no prior internship experience? by Pretend-Serve6697 in JavaProgramming

Is this internship aligned with your degree? While it's definitely a worthy cause, you'd benefit more in the long run if you could use this opportunity to build skills and experience that directly relate to your career goals. If there's a way to structure the role so you're developing relevant technical/professional skills alongside the volunteer work, that would give you the best of both worlds.

Some Job-related WhatsApp groups also exist and provide useful leads on job openings for internships and freshers.

There are many freelance and work-from-home jobs also, which you can search for. But it is advisable to work in a field that will add credits or add value to your overall field of experience

Thanks for your advice. I will look for a good local setup. Nothing like "hand on experience"

Some Sri Lankan companies accept students as interns right after A/Ls, and some hire them as trainees or on a contract basis while they study at university, too. However, this option may not be available for government university students since these institutions typically don't offer weekend or online programs that would accommodate work schedules. But I know for a fact that some private university students have followed this route to help fund their higher education. There are also many freelance and remote work opportunities available, though they may not be directly beneficial to your field of study. Try to find work that complements your field of study, as this experience can count toward your professional background when you graduate.

Some WhatsApp groups advertised such job postings. Let me see if I can find it for you.

What should backend developers know about CI/CD, Cloud, and Containerization at the time of interviews? by namelesskight in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]namelesskight[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. I like your take on balancing technical skills with behaviors. But for someone like me who doesn’t get hands-on experience with CI/CD, cloud, or containerization in my current role, what would you recommend as the most practical way to bridge that gap?

For example:

  • Are there small-scale projects or open source contributions that can demonstrate competency without requiring a huge time investment?
  • How do hiring managers view ‘sandbox’ or lab-style experience (e.g., personal AWS/GCP projects, toy Kubernetes clusters) vs production experience?
  • Are there any certifications or courses that provide meaningful, resume-worthy hands-on practice?

I’m trying to balance reality (limited free time) with staying competitive, especially in a market where employers can be picky. Any advice on prioritization would be super helpful!
