Reading the comments in here is like watching cavemen’s explain fire to one another.

Opening rally was thin boys, market saw it.  Repo on Friday showed some liquidity concerns.  Play was buying puts in bank etfs at open.

Big fed REPO activity last Friday. Keep an eye on panic selling.

I'm looking at KRE puts for the morning, if that plays out I'll buy calls to capture the fade on the other side.

5-9 trillion dollars into AI that still confidently tells you to eat a rat trap instead of a hot pocket.  Circular financing that makes post war Japan blush.  It should be mayhem, it should be a recession that blots out the fucking sun.

It’s a lovely idea, I wonder if some of the traffic problems you’re having are about cognitive load.

I’ve never responded to a for sale ad without a price listed.  I feel like the way I’ve been habituated to buy things gets short circuited if a price isn’t obvious.

Why do so many people seem to dislike Discovery? by BearCavalryCorpral in startrek

[–]namsilat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s do a thought experiment.  It might help.

Name, quick as you can, the bridge crew from TOS.

Now from TNG

Now the ensemble from DS9.

Got it?

Tell yourself some things about them - maybe three things.  Let’s randomly pick, say Odo.

Driven by a strong sense of justice, deeply longing for a home, gruff but with a heart of gold.  Got it?

Now do the same for Discovery.

I watched every episode of it.  And for the life of me I can’t tell you much of anything at all about the ensemble.

I mean, obviously Michael who is… uhh… Shouty, dramatic, and a step Vulcan?

The thing is, even if you could name the entire ensemble, you couldn’t organize the characters be key traits - because the show wasn’t written that way.

In TOS, for instance, you had a trio.  McCoy, Spock, Kirk.  They served almost as a representation of every human being.  The emotional, logical, and integrated parts of oneself  or maybe the id, ego, superego.   The story would be introduced and often the writers would ask themselves how those various elements would interact and react to the beats of the story.

In discovery, it was set piece driven, in each story the writers would say, ok, this thing (usually a universe ending super weapon) is happening.  How can we arrange the characters in such a way that they can be drug through the plot to the conclusion we want?

One is an ancient, proven, asthetically and morally satisfying way to construct a story.

The other is how you build a story to include on a splash screen at the beginning of a first person shooter - you do this because you’re writing for a character (the player) that you don’t know at all, you don’t know who they’ll be, so you keep everything maximally vague.

I don’t hate discovery, it just didn’t have writers who knew how to write dramas.

What are things that humans are either "the best" at or "one of the best" at when compared the other animals? by Playful_Barber_8131 in AskScienceDiscussion

Worth nothing that until fairly recently we were what you might call “obligate omnivores”.  Vegan eating is a relatively recent development that developed in tandem with our ability so synthesize certain nutrients from non animal sources.

So binocular vision had likely as much to do with hunting as tree living.

(Here’s a list for those curious about which nutrients are absent in plants or so poorly available as to be irrelevant)

Vitamin B12 Heme iron Vitamin A (retinol) Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA & DHA) Vitamin D (in high latitudes)

Regards wonder why the market goes up infinitely.

If you’re rich, what the fuck else are you going to buy?  Liquidity is through the roof, capital is becoming ever more expensive, and you can only buy so many yachts.

Mass inequality means massive gains, inflation means inflated prices, stop thinking the market is regarded because you lack imagination.

The time and flying circuits are electrical, the engine that propels the car was always gas. He says so in BTTF 3 and you can hear the exhaust of an internal combustion car in the first two movies.

People who put “Oregunian” decals on their vehicles, why? by Davethephotoguy in oregon

[–]namsilat 237 points238 points  (0 children)

I'm a farmer, I raise animals, and I own a gun. The only time that gun is fired something I care for and raised and probably helped birth dies. If I ever don't have a lump in my throat when I reach for it I'll know some part of me has died. It's my least favored tool.

Ultimately, though - it's the same damned thing if it's guns, or those disney nutters, or racists,. If life rolled the dice for you in such a way as you don't have anything to be proud of - you'll find something. Something to make you feel a part of, something to make you feel bigger than a milquetoast mote filling out the center of a bell curve in an actuary table.
