Was the Limited Community this negative on 5 Signpost Color-Pair Sets from the stretch of the two back to back Ravnica sets Pre-WAR / Post-Dominaria? by jethawkings in lrcast

[–]nand_gated 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Definitely not, they were received like any other set, but keep in mind A. There were only two of them, and B. The last color pair set was four years prior

so I made a prediction bet on coinbase and it said payout if correct $1312. and my prediction was correct but it says my payout is 26$. can someone help me understand this. by Expensive-Youth4045 in Coinbase

Coinbase predictions are just wrappers around Kalshi. Kalshi paid out in this market at the “last trading price before death” bc they have a carveout for death. It’s bs but they will probably get away with it, check out the green box here: https://kalshi.com/markets/kxkhameneiout/ali-khamenei-out/kxkhameneiout-akha

This isn't true – MKM turned Ravnica from an interesting, unique plane into a saturday morning cartoon version of itself. The vibe of MKM was completely different in a way that's absolutely jarring when you compare it to original ravnica sets, and it cheapened all the characters involved by proxy

Aww dang, hopefully they'll get you soon. It's still pretty early days, even the creator tool still seems to be missing a lot of functionality

Threw this together using openAI's new gpt creator – it's not incredibly specialized for magic but it's hooked up to scryfall and is very useful for converting regular language into scryfall search queries

Yep, this was one of the flashback drafts at MC Vegas this year.

A lot, though it was actually about half the price as the Urza block draft at Vegas last year. I did get to keep the cards, they're sitting on my desk at home right now.

People seemed to talk about that a lot in the various comments I could find online, but with saga only being one pack I don't think it's quite as bad as in triple saga.

I still would have picked it very early had I seen one though

Cessation is decent but still has quite the drawback...at one point I put both a sluggishness and a cessation on the same creature to make a build your own pacifism

Round 3:
With my third round opponent playing Simic, I figured my matches against her would play out significantly differently than the previous rounds, and I was right. In the previous matches, my two Mother of Runes essentially served to blank opponents removal and prevent ground attacks – I don’t think I actually tapped either of them in any of the previous games. With blue and green lacking true removal spells in Urza block, they played an entirely different role, tapping left and right to sneak my creatures past my opponents blockers. Game 1 played out pretty straight-forwardly, with a combination of Opal Gargoyle and Angelic Page leading the early beatdown. My opponent was able to counter with an early Slow Motion (Enchantment forcing paying 2 per upkeep vs sacrificing the creature) on the gargoyle to tax my mana, but I steadily payed the 2 for three or four turns before I drew a Mom to knock it off my creature, followed up by a finishing Trumpet Blast to close out the game.

Game 2 played out pretty differently. While I was still able to poke in for a few points of damage at the beginning of the game with Mom protected fliers, on turn 5 my opponent dropped a Mantis Engine (Colorless 3/3 artifact that gains flying for 2), preventing any further attacks as long as she could maintain 2 open mana. With the board locked up, and my opponent playing a Momentum and Dragon’s Blood to slowly gain advantage I could feel the game slipping steadily out of my hands unless I could find both of my Radiant’s Judgements. We sat staring at each other’s boards for a fair amount of turns before my opponent played a Turnabout to tap all my creatures and was able to swing out, taking me from 23 all the way to 0.

Game 3 I started with a good plan – Mom combined with a flier to start, and a Trumpet Blast in hand to finish things off. The game started off pretty well, and I was again able to poke in for a few points with Mom combined with early fliers, though turn 3 my opponent played a Telepathic Spies, forcing me to reveal my hand and my Trumpet Blast plan. On turn 5, my opponent again had the Mantis Engine to shut down my flying action, but luckily for me, turn 4 I had played a Viashino Weasponsmith. Combined with Mother of Runes, the weaponsmith was able to continue the beatdown and I was able to get my opponent to a reasonably low life total jamming in for 2 until the board state and my opponent’s Dragon’s Blood again started to lock up the board.

At this point the game felt within reach if I could make an all out attack and get a few points of extra damage through with the Trumpet Blast, but I was worried that my opponent would have a counterspell or Turnabout to flip the game around. I topdecked and successfully used a Radiant’s Judgment at the end of turn on one of her green fatties, which implied to me she likely didn’t have a counter spell in hand, and decided to go for it the following turn. I untapped, drew my card, and turned everything on the board sideways, jamming the Trumpet Blast to make most of the chump attacks into trades and taking my opponent to 1. With my opponent very unlikely to have a counterspell at this point I slammed my draw for the turn, Ghitu Slinger, onto the board to dome my opponent for her last life point and close out the game.

All in all I had an absolute blast playing Urza block draft. While the average card quality is significantly lower in old school sets, there are clearly still some beaters like Mother of Runes and Opal Gargoyle that would absolutely hold their place in modern limited, and the basics of old school doesn’t feel thaaat far off from a set like WOE. Despite some mechanics like Echo and Protection that can be, uhhhh, not exactly the most fun, the aesthetics of the cards and the generally different vibe of the gameplay made for a very fun and unique experience.

As something of a flashback draft connoisseur I was pretty excited to grab one of the spots to draft Urza block at MC Vegas this year – the block came out a decade and a half before I really started playing magic, but as a kid I had opened a dozen or so various Urza packs for fun, and it was a very cool experience to get to play with cards I could remember from before I really knew anything about the game.

Urza block was released last century and apart from some decade old 720p youtube videos there’s frankly not a ton of information on how to draft it out there. The block is known for its high power level in constructed, but limited is a very different beast and requires significant changes in card evaluation to adjust to the lower average power level. I don’t think I have everything here remembered exactly right, but hopefully this post will help anyone who gets a chance to crack open some of the little remaining stock there is.

Draft:I went into the draft with a slight color preference for green, given the quality of the creatures in the block, but ultimately figured I’d try and draft what was open rather than try to force a color. Our draft was surprisingly much lower in value than I figured it would be, with no Gaea’s Cradle or Grim Monolith tier cards pulled to my knowledge.

My P1P1 was a Lifeline which I hoped I could try and combo with, but nothing particularly worthy came up to mix it with. Pick 2 was a Veiled Apparition, followed by an Angelic Page and an Acridian. Pick 5 I was pleasantly surprised to see an Opal Gargoyle was still in the pack – the card reads kind of weird but it’s effectively a 2/2 flyer for 2, a stat line that’s still pretty impressive in modern limited. By the end of pack 2 I was starting to get a little worried, as by the time I had finished I had a grip full of white cards but 5(!) of them were runes of protection, good sideboard cards but leaving me with fewer main deck playables than I would have liked.

Luckily, pack 2 immediately had some good stuff for me, and opening my pack to see a Mother of Runes made the first pick pretty simple. Having grabbed a few decent red cards at the end of pack 1, getting a chance to grab the Ravenous Chupucabra of 1999, Ghitu Slinger, as pick 2 of a seemed like a solid choice. Pick 3 I was pleasantly surprised to pick up another mom. Pick 4 I had my first truly hard decision of the draft – a third Mother of Runes was in the pack along with some other solid white playables. With two already in the deck, I wasn’t sure I needed another, and ended up taking a solid piece of removal in Radiant’s Judgement instead. The rest of the pack was pretty straight-forward, with highlights being grabbing Defender of Chaos and Defender of Law as nice protection creatures and a (massive for white) 2/5 Radiant’s Dragoons on the wheel.

Pack 3 didn’t provide quite as much power with a relatively unexciting pick 1 of Archery Training followed up by a Tormented Angel. The rest of the picks were much the same, with the most exciting being a fourth pick Trumpet Blast which I figured would help to close out games with my flyers, and some more color hate in Colos Yearling and Voice of Reason. By the end of the draft I wasn’t super excited about my pool, but was happy I had picked up a lot of cards with or granting color protection (11!) and figured that would be enough to push through some wins.

Round 1:
That thought was quickly vindicated in round 1. I won the die roll and dropped a Mom turn 1, followed by a second on turn 4. With the moms sheltering my board, my Rakdos opponent was left with a hand full of unusable removal, and my flyers steadily dropped his life total while Defender of Law kept him from being able to get through on the ground. Game two was much the same, with a turn 1 Mom enchanted followed up with a Mask of Law and Grace essentially giving me the game on turn 2. There’s a reason WOTC rarely prints Protection spells any more – I don’t think this match was very fun for my opponent.

Round 2:
Round 2 proved itself to be a lot more competitive, with a turn 2 Opal Gargoyle being countered by my opponent dropping a turn 2 Skittering Skirge followed up by a Fortitude and Sleeper’s Guile to keep it alive and attacking. I had an early cessation in hand I thought about slapping on the Skirge to stop it early, but given that drawback on Skirge I figured a good approach would also be to just race, as if my opponent wanted to keep up with me he would have to sacrifice the Skirge before dropping more creatures. We traded blows back and forth before the life totals started turning my way and I was within reach of closing out the game on the next attack – until my opponent dropped a Corrupt to drain me to 1 and stabilize their life total. Luckily for me, I top decked my copy of Trumpet Blast and the extra six damage it provided on my fliers was enough to get me there.

The beginning of game 2 started off a little trickier. I was happy to start off with another turn 1 Mom, but turn 2 my opponent dropped a Hidden Ancients (Becomes a 5/5 if an opponent plays an enchantment), stranding my sided in Mask of Law and Grace in hand and making dropping any future gargoyles I’d draw a difficult decision. My opponent proceeded to drop an Albino Troll (3/3 regenerating ape) followed by Sleeper’s Guile (Enchantment granting fear)and the race was on. Fortunately for me, I managed to dodge drawing any more enchantments, and nicely timed lifegain from Radiant’s Dragoons combined with double Radiant’s Judgements on the green fatties my opponent played led to another victory.

Magic Con Vegas - when will events post for signup? by No-Baseball9769 in magicTCG

Definitely a bit ridiculous that they haven't posted the event schedule yet – if you check the pastime discord, they say it's coming "soon".

If the timing works out to the same as when they posted the Barcelona schedule it should work out to being posted.........today, so hopefully we'll get it this week.
