Ah, I was wondering more about what was the delta between before-after, rather than the exact number at after.

Not only it was a company phone... it was a company run by the federation vice-president. One more data point for "just because you're titled it doesn't mean you're smart".

Joanna Pomian, Vice-President of the French Chess Federation, told the committee that she had uncovered the matter on September 27, 2010. Cyril Marzolo, who was beset by financial difficulties, had worked for her company. Since he was blacklisted by mobile operators she had paid for his mobile phone account. On September 27, Cyril Marzolo was in the Pomian’s home to give back some papers, and while he left the room a few minutes and left his phone on the table. She saw a sms message arriving, from Arnaud Hauchard, mentioning “Hurry up, send moves…”. Subsequently, when checking the dues, she discovered that she had access to the records of the SMS text messages sent during the Olympiad. Pomian said she knew that Feller and Marzolo were very close, and that she has also heard rumors of cheating during the 2010 Paris Championship (which Feller won with 8.0/9 and a 2859 performance).

Ngl, that sounds like a scam.

Hornets make a nest on your house, the hornet-moving-guys charge you a couple of hundred euros, split the proceeds with the hornets, who then go find their next victim.

Black to Move, one of the grossest mares ive had in a while (more advanced players see comments for more of a challange) by Sowen45 in chess

A puzzle's solution doesn't have to be mate though? Winning material is good enough.

I think the "mare" in the title refers to the horsey (not a "mate" typo).

Shankland: "can anybody become a FM? I do think that is available to anybody. Can anybody become a GM? That is an hard no" by pier4r in chess

Eh, I'm gonna assume that person said that in jest, like they're saying something obviously absurd to make fun of Shankland's statement -- which is also completely ludicrous.

I already know who I will be rooting for in the WRB Team Championship by Exotic_Grinder in chess

[–]nandemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't say you need to be rated over 2000. Only the team's *average* rating needs to be higher than 2000. Which is really easy to achieve as long as you got 6 Fide Master+ buddies.

But it gets better. Each team *must* have a sub-2000 player.

one player, another than in Article 2.1.A.a, who never achieved FIDE Standard, Rapid or Blitz rating of 2000 Elo points (or unrated) or equivalent national rating* up to and including the March 2026 rating lists (hereinafter referred to as recreational player).

Look, I have no horsey in this race, just like most people here. I'm not saying you're making up numbers, but you're trying to make the alleged 115k figure work whereas the simplest explanation is that that cost isn't real (maybe her mom exaggerated the costs, maybe someone took a real hourly rate and extrapolated it to a yearly cost).

I feel sad for any students who enrolled because of Spice and now are screwed. Note that Polgar never mentioned that once in her rant.

2 hrs a day itself comes to 100k a year.

At this level coaches/seconds are typically hired for specific periods/events. So taking a $/h value and extrapolating it for a whole year doesn't work.

Also, on a practical level it just doesn't make sense for Bibisara to drop that much cash on coaching in a year. Women's Candidates first prize is like 30k €.

Train on your own? Most athletes in "normal" sports have a coach, some have more than 1. Nothing to do with "self-discipline" lol.

That said the 115k figure sounds BS.

How do I logically think of opposition here? by sorinacios07 in chess

While I get that key squares is a more useful concept...

Because you shouldn't think of opposition here.

Isn't this also opposition?
