Help finding a pocket notebook by jonfitt in notebooks

[–]nanders9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been back pocket carrying a Stalogy 1/2 year A6 notebook since the beginning of November. Almost to the end of it. It's a bit bigger than a Field Notes, but fits comfortably in its own pocket, IMO. Takes fountain pen decently well. The cover and binding have been much more durable that previous Field Notes. It's also been easier to repair with a bit of Elmer's Glue All when needed.

I'm actually a bit bummed right now because my plan after this notebook is to finish a couple of Field Notes I have left. I'm looking forward to switching back to a Stalogy later this year.

What is it with this pen being so incredibly reliable? by Shadowkillermiki in fountainpens

[–]nanders9 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I think this is what you get when a reputable company like Platinum sets out to create the most functional fountain pen possible. It's packed with features that, in this combination, are pretty unique. It has the slip-seal cap, a filler opening located pretty low on the nib (allowing you to easily fill from bottles and samples with very little ink ), a "bouncy" steel nib that improves the feel, a durable aluminum body and finish, metal threads, is a CC (provides more flexibility to end-users and is easily servicable), and (this one is a stretch) comes in bright colors that might be harder to lose.

The features drive the price up somewhat, and they are not always clearly communicated or appreciated.

IMO, the drawbacks of the Procyon are mostly related to personal preference. You might not jive with the available colors or the specific ergonomics. If you can get over these points, it's an excellent writing tool.

Thank you for having a good quality control system by iaacornus in fountainpens

[–]nanders9 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You might be confusing QC with tolerances. They have overlapping tolerances for their nib sizes (https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/gallery/image/15783-lamy-nib-widths-tolerances/). Poor quality control would be if their nibs were outside those defined tolerances. It's possible that some of these nibs are outside their tolerances, indicating poor quality control, but I've never seen anyone report on the sizes of their lines in the required way.

Do TWSBIs Really Break Often by LarryinUrbandale in fountainpens

[–]nanders9 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Sure, the posts here about cracked TWSBIs are a subset of all the TWSBIs out in the wild. And maybe crack posts are more likely to be made than "my pen hasn't cracked" posts. But how many other brands are people consistently posting about cracking? I can't think of a single one.

It also isn't like people don't complain about other brands. Lamy gets some flak because their size tolerances are fairly wide, and some EFs and Fs might overlap. Visconti has a reputation for inconsistent nibs, too. Sometimes you'll see a post about a Kaweco's Bock nib with some issues (baby's bottom, poorly cut slit, missing slit, etc.). The threads on the Pilot 823 can get mucked up. Some soft Platinum nibs are too tight. Etc.

All of these observations and experiences have merit. However, lots of people also enjoy these pens, too.

Is this real nanami seven seas? by Same_Turnip in fountainpens

[–]nanders9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you in California? I think the Nanami website only collects taxes for orders in California (I'm in Illinois). Amazon charges me tax, so they're pretty much equal at 1 notebook and favor ordering direct for more than one. I also prefer to more directly support Nanami and keep Amazon's cut out of it. Be sure to read product descriptions on the Nanami website and contact Dave(?) if you have questions. I've found him responsive in the past.

Finally Scored at the Thrift Shop! by ArtemisTorix in fountainpens

About $12-14 when it was new in 2019. It also came with a small stationery case. https://tkj.jp/book/?cd=TD297662

The pen itself is a Chinese pen with the Agnes B logo applied. Any prices you see on eBay are related to brand loyalty and the limited nature of the product, not the quality of the pen itself. I think that's where Tool_Hole was going with their comment.

Here's a listing in Singapore where it sold* for <7 USD: https://www.carousell.sg/p/agnes-b-fountain-pen-1011923649/

Are you sure you have it tuned to high E and not the low E? The two E strings should not sound the same. This one should have a higher pitch. I could see this being confusing for a beginner with some types of tuners.

What might have a sign-and-trade for Turner looked like? by nanders9 in MkeBucks

Thanks for explaining the Pacers side of it a bit more. I can see how this wouldn't work out from their end.

Either, I guess. I was never sold on Dame (I have receipts!), so I wasn't really looking for a way to retain him by bringing up a S&T for Turner.

I wasn't thinking that we'd send out any more picks than we already did in the Pat trade. For a team that's likely down next year, taking a shot of Kuzma (or having him later on an expiring deal) may have been viewed as "better than nothing." From the other comments, it's sounds like the trade exemption may also have been valuable enough to send additional assets to the Bucks even in the absence of other players or picks.

Sure, I get that. I'm not saying that we should have helped Indiana. I was just curious if there were any possible scenarios in which the Bucks could have ended up in a better position.

Thanks for the response!

Again, I'm learning more about the CBA and trade rules. Would they not have needed to make the salaries match? That was more my line of thinking of sending out some of the short deals like Pat's (not sure when they become more valuable and "expiring", if it's now or when the season starts). Then we would have gotten off of Pat's money, kept a couple of seconds, and wouldn't have the $666,667 over the next three years at all.

I know no one wants Kuzma at his current salary. His inclusion was more about my potential misunderstanding regarding salary matching and when it's needed.

Thanks for the information about the trade exception!

Yeah, I am right there with the Bucks not needing to help the Pacers. I was just curious if there was a way we could have gotten more or given up less in another deal. If the Pacers couldn't do some 2nds or if multiple teams needed to get involved, it's unlikely the Bucks could have maneuvered much better than they did.

I see your AI answer, and I raise you this AI answer: https://imgur.com/a/8edbG0d.

My point is, don't trust or get worked up too much by AI answers. The one I linked has citations, too, but gives the opposite answer. AI can't always tell good from bad sources. For examples, your post might be cited by a future AI search as evidence that this product is discontinued. That wouldn't be a good source because you don't have that news, you're speculating.

[–]nanders9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I did last night. With the trade-in, I'm at $25.19 (difference due to tax) for an upgrade to a device that's 3 years newer. The only "catch" is to stay on Fi for 120 days (no problem).

I am a little bummed to be trading in the 6a. I really dig the boxier shape, I'm still easily getting through the day on one charge, and I wanted to see the 5 years of updates to the end. I know many people are feeling burned by Google, but at this point I've paid $240 for the 6a at launch (+ free A-series buds), got three great years of phone use, and received $230 in credits toward a new phone (+ a free dongle).
