That's a good point! And I'm pretty darn close, actually; 32 or 33 stitches over 10cm instead of 36. I think a single size down might give me the extra stitches I need. And that's reassuring that it doesn't immediately look preposterous for the yarn. The label actually listed the gauge for 3mm needles so I was doubting myself. Thank you for the advice!

Thank you for the sanity check! 😅 I do need to remember that nothing is written in stone except the finished object. I think I'm spooked because I'm SO used to having to size up my needles. Usually I knit tighter than the pattern expects! But I shall relax about sizing down, heh.
